APP-J: HOW TO INSTALL APPLICATION JUKEBOX PLAYER University Computers Application Jukebox Player is pre-installed on most University Windows PCs and laptops, including those in: University PC Labs Staff Offices (PCs and laptops) The Library Lecture Theatres and Seminar Rooms If you are using a computer in one of these locations, you do not need to install Application Jukebox Player. Instead see App-j: How to launch applications with Application Jukebox Non-University Computers All staff and students are free to install Application Jukebox Player to any Windows computer. 1) To access Application Jukebox, go to: https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ 2) Login using your University IT account username and password 3) See the message Application Jukebox Required 4) Click I need it If these buttons do not appear, either: a) You previously clicked I have it but it didn t work (link) b) You already have Application Jukebox Player installed (link) 5) See Application Jukebox Player Download 6) If the download does not start automatically, click Manual Download 7) Run the downloaded file: jukebox-player-latest.exe 8) If prompted confirm that you want to run the downloaded file as an administrator University of Reading 2016 Thursday 3 November 2016 Page 2

18) See Application Jukebox Player is still running! notification message. 19) Application Jukebox Player is now installed 20) You can now launch Jukebox Applications from the web page at https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ APP-J: HOW TO LAUNCH APPLICATIONS WITH APPLICATION JUKEBOX Part A) Application Jukebox Player Before you can launch Jukebox Applications you need Application Jukebox Player installed on your computer. 1) Look for the Application Jukebox Player icon in the Windows system tray (near the clock) If the icon is present continue to Part B. 5) Click Application Jukebox Player NOTE: At first no applications are loaded in Application Jukebox Player. You must continue to Part B to launch new applications from the Application Jukebox web page. NOTE: If Application Jukebox Player does not appear in step 4 it is likely not installed on your computer. TIP: You can quickly find applications by clicking on Search Apps and typing the name of the application you need. 20) Click on the Launch button next to the application you want to load 21) If you are prompted to open or save a file from appstore.reading.ac.uk, always click Open 22) See Application Jukebox Player appear 23) See your chosen application Virtualizing 24) Within in few seconds your chosen application should appear on screen TIP: If you close the application and want to use it again you can now launch the same application from the Windows Start Menu. NOTE: Some applications are available to use offline and some are not. APP-J: HOW TO WORK OFFLINE WITH APPLICATION JUKEBOX Some Jukebox Applications can be used offline and will continue uninterrupted when you have no Wi-Fi connection or unplug your network cable. To use an application offline you need to: 1) Ensure the application is not limited to [Online] use or [Campus or VPN] 2) Check the application is Ready and not Paging the remainder 3) Use the application online at least once every 30 or 365 days (See Time Limits for Offline Use below) 4) (Optional) Switch to 'Work Offline' mode to confirm which applications will be available offline If an application no longer works offline, try launching it again from https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ 1) Online Restrictions Applications listed with the following text in the title are not available to use offline: [Online] [Campus or VPN] You must have an active Internet connection You must be connected to the campus network or VPN How do I connect to University network services from off campus using VPN? 2) Application Status Before you can use an application offline it must finish paging to the Application Jukebox Player. 1) Click on the Start Menu 2) Type jukebox 3) See search results appear 4) Click Application Jukebox Player 5) See Application Jukebox Player University of Reading 2016 Thursday 3 November 2016 Page 9
6) Check that the application you want to use is Ready 7) If the application you want to use is Running 8) Click on the application name 9) Check that the License Type is Fixed 10) Check that the Offline Remaining Time is greater than 0 mins 3) Time Limits for Offline Use Applications that are licensed to the University will work offline for up to 30 days Free software applications will work offline for up to 365 days. When you launch an application whilst connected to the Internet the timer is automatically reset. 4) Switch to 'Work Offline' mode to confirm which applications will be available offline This step is optional but will show you exactly which applications you can use offline. 6) Click on the Start Menu 7) Type jukebox 8) See search results appear 9) Click Application Jukebox Player 10) Click File from the menu bar 11) Click Work Offline University of Reading 2016 Thursday 3 November 2016 Page 10

APP-J: UNABLE TO LAUNCH APPLICATION DUE TO AUTHENTICATION OR AUTHORIZATION FAILURE When you try to launch an application you receive an error message Unable to launch application due to authentication or authorization failure This error can be caused for any of the following reasons: An internet connection is required for this application and you are currently offline You have been using a licensed application offline for more than 30 days The application is no longer available via Application Jukebox The application has been replaced by a new version Your University IT account password has recently changed Troubleshooting Try the following steps until you are able to launch the application again: 1. Connect to the Internet and attempt to launch the application again 2. Go to: https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ 3. APP-J: HOW TO CONFIGURE AND VIEW THE APPLICATION JUKEBOX PLAYER LOGS The Application Jukebox Player creates a log file which can be useful for troubleshooting purposes. This article explains how to configure extended logging which will write more detailed information into the log file. It also explains how to save the log file so that you can attach it to an e-mail if requested by IT support staff. Instructions To gather additional error information, you should first configure the Application Jukebox Player for extended logging by following these steps: 1. Open the Application Jukebox Player 2. Click on the 'File, menu, then click 'Options' 3. Click on the 'Log' tab 4. Under, 'Logging level', click to select 'Extended' 5. Click 'OK Once the player is configured for extended logging, try to launch the Jukebox Application again. See: App-j: How to launch applications with Application Jukebox Once you have repeated the steps which cause the error, follow the steps below to view and save the Application Jukebox log file: 1. Open the Application Jukebox Player. 2. Click on the 'File' menu, then click 'Options'. 3. Click on the 'Log' tab. 4. Click on the 'View Log' button - the log file should open in your default text editor. 5. To save the log file to the Desktop, click 'File' then 'Save As'. 6. APP-J: APPLICATION JUKEBOX IS STUCK ON VALIDATING SESSION Error Message When you visit https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ you see the Validating Session message but this remains on screen and you are unable to launch any applications. Cause This issue can occur for the following reasons: You need to open/run the downloaded.tok file The Application Jukebox Player is not installed on your computer Solution There are three parts to this solution. You may only need to follow one part. Follow Part A if - you have only just installed Application Jukebox Player on this computer. Follow Part B if - you have previously installed and used Application Jukebox Player on this computer. Follow Part C if - you have not installed or used Application Jukebox Player before on this computer. Part A) Try to open the downloaded.tok file If you already have Application Jukebox Player installed, you may need to tell your web browser to open or run the.tok files that are downloaded from the web site. 1) Go to https://appstore.reading.ac.uk/ 2) See Validating Session 3) Follow the instructions for your web browser: Google Chrome a) A download should appear in the bottom left of the screen with the name ending.tok b) Click on the small arrow to the right of the download c) Click Always open files of this type University of Reading 2016 Thursday 3 November 2016 Page 15
d) Click on the downloaded filename to open it with Application Jukebox Player Mozilla Firefox e) A window should appear You have chosen to open: a) Click Open with b) Choose Streaming COM Server (default) c) Click to select Do this automatically for files like this from now on d) Click OK Internet Explorer a) When you are prompted to open or save a file from software2hub.university.edu, click Open 4) If you are able to open the.tok file with Application Jukebox Player you can now refer to the following instructions: How to launch applications with Application Jukebox Part B) Install the latest version of Application Jukebox Player Older versions of Application Jukebox Player can get stuck when Validating Session.
