MAN Architecture How Cisco IT Architected Headquarters MAN A Cisco on Cisco Case Study: Inside Cisco IT 1

Overview Challenge: Rapid growth and IP telephony required a new standard platform for the Cisco desktop network in San Jose Single platform easier to manage and maintain Solution: Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch and Gigabit Ethernet Catalyst 6500 Series supports switching, routing, IP telephony Gigabit Ethernet provides greater bandwidth Results: Higher availability, lower support costs Standards reduce downtime and management costs Next Steps: New Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series modules Added bandwidth, firewall, content switching, and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) performance based on new Catalyst 6500 Series 2

Challenge: Growth and Voice Convergence Rapid Growth Cisco experienced rapid growth; supporting multiple platforms added management costs Fiber between sites was limited, but bandwidth needs kept growing Convergence Migrating voice applications to data networks required an IP telephony ready platform 3

Solution: Catalyst 6500 Series Switch and Gigabit Ethernet Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switch selected Provided high-speed switching at desktop Provided in-line power for IP telephony, wireless LAN Provided routing capability in hierarchical desktop network Gigabit Ethernet selected Bandwidth to spare for growth and new applications Supported with Catalyst 6500 Series line cards Dual pathing available using dark fiber in most routes on campus Backup path using vendor GigaMAN service where dark fiber is not available 4

Solution: Gigabit Ethernet on Dark Fiber ½ mile (Not to scale) Highway 237 Cisco Way Tasman Drive Site 5 Zanker Avenue Site 4 Sites 1, 2, and 3 Number of Fibers in Use Between Buildings 97+ Fibers 73-96 Fibers SBC Leased GigaMAN 37-72 Fibers 12-36 Fibers Cisco Building 5

Solution: Hierarchical Router/Switch Topology Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch doing Layer 3 Routing Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Category 5 Copper Gigabit Ethernet Fiber Gigabit Ethernet Intersite Fiber Gigabit Ethernet Intersite Leased Fiber Core Distributio n Acces s Router MAN Backbone Connected by dark fiber Site Backbone One per MAN region 3 on main campus Desktop Cluster One per site 7 on main campus BDF Building Distribution Frame One per building 41 in main campus IDF Intermediate Distribution Frame Two per floor Site 1 A - H Site 2 I - L Site 3 M - P Site 4A 1-7 Site 4B 8-12 Site 4C 13-19 Site 5 20-25 6

Solution: Building Topology Routing and Switching Building Distribution Frame Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch doing Layer 3 Routing Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Desktop Cluster Hub Category 5 Copper Gigabit Ethernet Fiber Site Backbone Building Distribution Frame HSRP HSRP RJ-45 Jacks Intermediate Distribution Frames 10/100 Mbps Switched Ethernet Intermediate Distribution Frames 7

Results: Benefits of the Standards Greatly improved availability Greater than 99.995 Easier troubleshooting and support Spare bandwidth to support all applications 8

Next Steps: Modules on the 6500 Add Functionality 10 Gigabit Ethernet in the core between data centers for data backup Cisco firewall services modules for additional firewall security at data centers and Internet gateways Cisco content switching modules for content switching services across hosts or data centers SSL services module for accelerated secure Web applications 9
