GPM500 Generator Protection Module

Generator Protection Module GPM500 The microprocessor based Generator Protection System GPM500 performs the protection and control of medium and low voltage generators and networks. The GPM500 can be operated as stand alone or in combination with other GPM500 communicating via data bus. Generally each application (e.g. generator, coupling circuit breaker, etc.) requires an own GPM500 for the protection. Typically the GPM500 is fitted inside the associated panel of the switch board. The modular design allows the extension of functions and of in- and outputs in an easy way. Via connection plugs the modules can be directly interconnected. The installation of the modules can be easily done via snap-on rails. Besides the below listed protection and control functions of the GPM500 data transfer with external monitoring and control systems is possible via an interface (Modbus, CANopen) and with the Internet (Modbus/ TCP). The authorisation for remote access/modification of parameters can be restricted. For operation, setting of parameters and control of the GPM500 a separate tableau with touch screen display is used (BAT500). Several graphical symbols on the main picture and all relevant data such as current, voltage, load etc. allow general survey of the status of e.g. the generator and the respective generator circuit breaker. Control and modification (password protected) of parameters can be done on protection function based pages (e.g. one page for overcurrent protection with all relevant parameters). An alarm list will appear automatically in case of failure. An integrated PLC allows the programming of additional protection and control functions. The programming of the PLC can be done with functional blocks according to IEC 1131 on a PC in an easy and user friendly way. Via the touch screen display BAT500 the online visualisation of PLC process functions and variables is possible. The GPM500 is mainly intended for the protection and control of the following listed applications (low and medium voltage): Diesel generators Shaft generators Emergency generators Coupling circuit breakers Transfer line circuit breakers Transformers Motors 2

Generator Protection Module GPM500 Protection Functions Instantaneous overcurrent protection (short circuit) (ANSI Code No. 50) Thermal overload (overcurrent) (ANSI Code No. 49) Reverse power (ANSI Code No. 32) Under-/ Overvoltage (ANSI Code No. 27 / 59) Under-/ Overfrequency (ANSI Code No. 81L / 81H) Phase balance (asymmetry) current protection (ANSI Code No. 46) Monitoring of excitation (ANSI Code No. 24 & 40) Circuit breaker failure (ANSI Code No. 50BF) Undercurrent monitoring (underload) (ANSI Code No. 37) Synchronising (ANSI Code No. 25) Phase failure (ANSI Code No. 47) Stator protection Load shedding (switch off of unimportant consumers) Voltage backup for undervoltage coil Protection against earthfault (optional) (ANSI Code No. 50G) Differential protection (optional) (ANSI Code No. 87G/M/N/T) Neutral voltage displacement (optional) (ANSI Code No. 59N/64) Power Management Functions Automatic synchronising Active load sharing Asymmetrical load sharing (e.g. for shaft generators) Frequency control Load depending diesel start / stop "Topload" function Blackout start 3

Modules NEG500/NEG510 (Power Supply) The NEG500 and NEG510 are the power supply assemblies (24V DC) of the GPM500 (each with two redundant, monitored power supplies). The modules have the following output currents for supply of the connected modules: NEG500 with 1 A output current NEG510 with 2 A output current DCC500 (DC/DC Converter) The DCC500 is a DC/DC converter (24V) for the (isolated) connection of devices which are to be operated on a floating basis with respect to the 24V mains (e.g. the touch screen display BAT500). ZKG500 (Central Unit) The central unit ZKG500 handles the following functions: Monitoring of all data of the internal and external data bus (e.g. data communication to other GPM500, to superior control systems and/or other periphery) Evaluation of all monitored data (e.g. for protection functions, control functions,...) Transfer of data and commands to connected units, e.g. - Load depending starting and stopping of diesel engines - Load sharing Interlockings Initialisation of all internal units via the internal system bus (CAN) With the internal watchdog function the ZKG500 switches off outputs of the DIO500 and GOV500 assemblies if necessary. The communication with other GPM500 s is carried out via a redundant CAN bus. For data communication to superior control systems and other periphery a RS485 interface (Modbus) is provided. Also included in the ZKG500 assembly is the integrated PLC. Optional a remote access via the internet for monitoring and setting of parameters (password protected) is possible. The remote access can be restricted to specific parameters/functions. GOV500 (Interface to Diesel Engine Controller) The GOV500 assembly serves the diesel engine controller (output signals for speed). It is also possible to use this module as an universal I/O interface (2 digital in-/outputs, 2 analogue outputs). DIO500 (Digital I/O s) The DIO500 is the standard digital I/O assembly for GPM500 systems. It consists of the following functional units: 8 digital input channels (isolated) 4 digital output channels (relays 24V/4A) 3 x 4 light emitting diodes (LED's) on the front panel (8 x DI, 4 x DO) 4

Modules SLE500 (Current and Power Acqusition) The SLE500 assembly is used for the current and power acquisition in GPM500 systems. Among others the assembly consists of the following functions: One watchdog relay 16 internal analog inputs (current and voltage measurement) 3 current transformers (1A nominal current) assigned to 5 of the 16 analog inputs) 4 light emitting diodes (LED's) on the front panel (Synchron., watchdog, Breaker on, Breaker tripped) One autonomous overcurrent detection One overcurrent relay "Circuit breaker off" One "Circuit breaker on" relay with separate enable input 4 digital inputs (isolated) The assembly performs following tasks: Acquisition of all analog data (internal and via analog bus) Evaluation of all acquired data (current and power calculation) Monitoring of the currents and, if necessary, overcurrent shutdown Switching on and off of circuit breaker via relay Communication with the ZKG500 (data exchange) TRV500 (Isolated Voltage Acquisition) The purpose of the TRV500 is the isolated voltage acquisition in GPM500 systems. The TRV500 is equipped with 3 measuring channels which, as standard, are configured as voltage inputs. The TRV500 can also be used for current measuring purposes by using other components (shunt resistors). DIF500 (Differential Current Detection) The purpose of the DIF500 is the isolated (differential) current detection in GPM500 systems. The DIF500 is equipped with 6 current transformers with a nominal input current of 1A. By means of them six currents can be measured and two three phase systems can be compared to one another respectively. USS500 (Voltage Backup for Undervoltage Coils) The USS500 assembly is used for the voltage backup of undervoltage coils. For an uninterrupted switching between two different supply voltages two 3 phase supplies are fitted on the USS500 module. 5

Modules BAT500 (Touch screen Display) For operation, setting of parameters and control of the GPM500 a separate tableau with touch screen display is used (BAT500). Following main pages are available: Operation (main) page Several graphical symbols, all relevant data such as current, voltage, load etc. and status information of the power management system (e.g. synchronising, manual / automatic selection,...) allow general survey of the status of e.g. the generator and the appending generator circuit breaker. Commands as for example start / stop of the diesel engine, etc. including the respective indication are located on the top of the picture. Measurement readings On this page measurement readings as currents, voltages, load and special readings as shifted voltages for example are shown. Adjustment page On this page the screen brightness can be adjusted and the language selected (English or German, other languages on request). For the modification of parameters the required password has to be entered here. The event list can be accessed from this adjustment page. Parameter pages Parameter settings can be viewed and changed (password protected) on these pages. A test of protection functions can be carried out via the parameter pages. Alarm page The alarm page occurs automatically in case of an alarm. The navigation between the several pages can be performed via touch buttons on the (common) navigation bar on the screen.
