Data Sheet Cisco Content Delivery Engine 280 for TV Streaming Cisco Content Delivery Engines (CDEs) are carrier-class appliances that power the Videoscape Distribution Suite (VDS) software for TV video and on-demand content streaming. This fourth-generation model offers a wide range of solid-state-drive (SSD) models and storage options, performance optimized for caching and delivering video on demand, providing service providers the price and performance they need for any use case. The Cisco CDE 280 delivers an exceptional level of scalability and reliability while giving service providers a distinct service-velocity advantage in supporting the next generation of personalized entertainment and interactive media. The Cisco CDE 280 platform combines with the Cisco Video Distribution Suite for Television (VDS-TV) software and content delivery applications (CDAs) that provide ingest, storage, caching, streaming, and other realtime, scalable, and resilient capabilities. Cisco CDE 280s work together to form a scalable, flexible, and highly available system that allows service providers to rapidly deploy high-value distribution services for applications such as video on demand (VoD), live streaming, time-shift TV (TSTV), and cloud DVR (cdvr). The Cisco CDE 280 is a fully optimized solution based on the Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS ) server platform. Cisco CDE 280 Product Overview The Cisco CDE 280 (Figure 1) extends the capabilities of the Cisco CDE portfolio in a 2RU form factor with the addition of 8 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports to deliver a superb combination of performance, flexibility, and efficiency. The Cisco CDE 280 includes: Two 3.20-GHz Intel Xeon E5-2667 v3 series processors 96-GB double data rate fourth-generation (DDR4) dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) for improved performance and lower power consumption 24 small form factor (SFF) drives Two 480-GB 2.5-inch Enterprise Value SATA SSD boot drives Cisco 12G SAS modular RAID (PCIe Gen 3.0) controller, which provides enterprise-class data protection for up to 24 SAS disk drives or SSDs Four dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet enhanced small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) network adapter cards Two onboard copper Gigabit Ethernet ports (dual 1-Gbps Intel i350 Ethernet ports) Hot-swappable redundant dual DC or AC power supply Flexible cache storage bundle structure, supporting storage upgrade paths and server repurposing opportunities Table 1 lists the Cisco CDE 280 supported models for VDS-TV. Table 1. Table 2. Features and Benefits Feature Industry-leading MPEG2TS stream density High-performance processing High-performance content acquisition High-performance throughput Centralized or hierarchical architecture Benefit With up to 10,000 MPEG2 standard-definition (SD) streams in 2 rack units (2RU), the Cisco CDE 280 Dense TV Streamer offers industry-leading video streaming density (5000 SD streams per RU). This translates to more than 220,000 MPEG2 SD streams served in a single rack, optimizing space requirements and reducing total ownership costs. Sixteen CPU cores promote high performance for computationally intensive tasks such as sustained live video streaming operations, extensive high concurrency of VoD requests, or per-stream targeted ad insertion. Cisco CDE 280 combined with the VDS-TV CDA software applications can simultaneously ingest a high amount of streams, providing highly scalable content acquisition of real-time live channels for time-shift TV and live services. CDE 280 is the leading appliance in the market that includes 8 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+, allowing outstanding streaming performance in a 2RU form factor, for both VoD and live applications. The high density of 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports powered by the VDS-TV software application provides optimal load balancing during peak hours of video consumption, so service providers can deliver the highest quality of experience (QoE) to their subscribers. Designed to increase flexibility, Cisco CDE 280 can be deployed in hierarchical or centralized architectures, which allow service providers to increase the efficiency of video distribution and delivery. 2016 Cisco and/or its affiliates. Feature Flash memory SSD technology SATA SSD boot drive Cisco 12-Gbps SAS modular RAID controller Dual-port management access Security features High-efficiency redundant power supply Nonstop service availability Logical server arrays Multifunction capabilities Flexibility Benefit Flash memory SSD technology for high-availability VoD streaming. The technology is used for video cache and transaction logging to lower operating costs and lay the foundation for even better performance and scale. Cisco optimized the CDE 280 to provide outstanding performance for VoD content delivery. Two 480-GB boot drives help ensure reliable bootup operations with dedicated capacity for day-to-day system operation. Cisco 12Gbps modular RAID PCIe Gen 3.0 controller provides enterprise-class data protection for up to 24 SAS SSDs. It includes a configurable DDR3 cache memory with 2-GB flash-backed write cache (FBWC). Dual dedicated 1 Gigabit Ethernet management ports are available, in addition to the ingest, fill, and streaming ports, to simplify connectivity and manageability. An optional locking bezel can be mounted to the front of the chassis to prevent unauthorized access to the drives. The Cisco CDE 280 base systems support either AC or DC high-efficiency power supplies for lower power consumption and a simplified sparing strategy, with the option for redundant dual supplies. Unique failover and resiliency features help ensure that hardware failures do not bring down the network and cause service outages. VDS-TV resource pooling and load balancing allow Cisco CDEs to be networked into logical server arrays that can provide effectively unlimited amounts of content storage (content library array), content cache (caching node array), and streaming capacity (streamer array) throughout the network. Additional streaming or storage capacity can be added to the array without outages or service interruption. Cisco VDS-TV detects the addition or removal of Cisco CDEs from the logical array and optimally load balances the entire resource pool. Independent scaling of the content library size and stream count allows flexibility in capital expenditures. Cisco CDE 280 models are built on a selected base system with minor differences among the available configurations, simplifying personnel training and equipment-sparing strategies. Cisco CDE 280 offers a flexible cache storage bundle structure, supporting storage upgrade paths and server repurposing opportunities. Cisco CDE 280 Specifications and Models The Cisco CDE 280 is a versatile platform that is available in the following models, each optimized for particular content delivery applications: Model CDE280-2U1: High-performance streamer with medium-density SSD storage Model CDE280-2U2: Cost-optimized medium-density storage SSD streamer Model CDE280-2U3: Very dense and high-performance SSD cache node and streamer Model CDE280-2U4: Entry-level streamer with cost-optimized lower-density storage All models when purchased as a streamer software application are available with a base license of 2000 SD streams.
