Radnor Middle School Course Syllabus Created November 5, 2013: Gail Furman Fill in course name: Technology Education Computers Put in course number (4 digits): Credits: Grades: 6 Weighted: Prerequisite: Length: 9 weeks, Every Day Format Overall Description of Course Students meet for nine (9) weeks every day and learn concepts in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Publisher, and Windows 7, as well as proper typing techniques. Also used Common Sense Media to learn how to be safe when using the computer. Common Core Standards Keystone Connections: Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks. Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts and topics. Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to an understanding of the topic. Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table). By the end of grade 8, read and comprehend science/technical texts in the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently. Student Objectives: Students will learn about Microsoft Windows 7, creating folders, renaming folders, cutting/copying/pasting documents to folders, icons, extensions, and use of the Internet. Students will learn about virus protection, spyware, firewalls, malware, hardware, and software. Students learn how to properly type with the keys covered using the software program Typing Instructor. Students will learn how to create a brochure using the various ribbons and/or picture icons on the toolbar as well as keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to create a PowerPoint presentation using the various ribbons and/or picture icons on the toolbar as well as keyboard shortcuts for Microsoft PowerPoint. Excel. Students will learn how to create a flyer using Microsoft Publisher with text boxes, tear-offs, and a graphic, using the various drop-down menus and/or picture icons on the toolbar. Safe Online Talk While acknowledging the benefits of online talk and messaging, students learn how to handle situations or online behavior which may make them feel uncomfortable. Students are able to hand in a completed Brochure using the features shown in Microsoft Word. Students are able to hand in and show the class a completed PowerPoint presentation using the features shown in Microsoft PowerPoint. Students are able to hand in a completed Excel table with Chart and formula page using the features shown in Microsoft Excel. Students are able to hand in a completed flyer with a graphic and text using Microsoft Publisher. Students are able to download and insert pictures, speak into a microphone, type text, create transitions, insert music, edit, and save their Photostory. Students are able to type at least 25 words per minute with 90% or better accuracy.
