SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Power off the computer when installing and removing PC cards. When the computer is turned off by using the power switch, there still might be power supplied to the motherboard. To ensure that your computer is completely shut down, unplug the computer s power cord from its power source. Static electricity can damage your client adapter. Before removing the adapter from the antistatic packaging, discharge static by touching a metal part of a grounded PC. GETTING SETUP To get initially set up, you need to: Install the Videum board. Connect your source(s). Install the software from the Videum CD. page 4

INSTALLING VIDEUM This section describes how to install the Videum board, connect Winnov s Watchdog, connect Digital I/O, and modify Video Input Termination. Installing the Videum Board To install the Videum board, do the following: 1. Turn off your computer and peripheral devices, and then disconnect the power supply. 2. Remove the computer cover and the adapter slot cover from the slot that matches your adaptor. 3. Firmly place the adapter edge connector into the PCI Express slot until it is fully inserted. Secure the bracket to the chassis. 4. Connect the Watchdog reset cable if you require this function. 5. Connect the Digital I/Os if desired used for trigger input or event signaling output. See the section on Digital I/Os. 6. Modify the Video Input Termination if desired. See the section on Video Input Termination. 7. Replace the computer cover. Plug in the power cord and restart your system. Installing Multiple Boards Winnov Videum enables you to install several Videum capture cards into your system. If you have installed multiple boards in one system, Videum software recognizes the number of capture cards that you have. Each board is one PCI Express device and requires only one driver installation. page 5

Connecting the Watchdog Reset Cable The Watchdog Reset is a crash recovery function that automatically reboots the system in the event of a software lock-up, thus allowing unattended operation. To establish Watchdog, do the following: 1. Unplug your computer s reset cable where it connects to the motherboard. 2. Connect your computer s reset cable that you disconnected to the pin connector (J29) on your Videum board. 3. Connect the Watchdog s reset cable (red/black) to the reset pins now opened on the motherboard. Reset Front Panel Jumper Front Panel Reset Button Mainboard J30 J29 Note: The polarity of the reset circuit is important. If the watchdog function isn't working, reverse the connection by flipping the black 2-pin connector. Videum DUO/Quattro PCI Express Card page 6

Connecting Digital I/O Your Videum board provides 8 digital I/O which can be used as trigger input or as event signaling output. Each input and output is used individually as input or output. The Digital I/O interface on the board is controlled through Winnov s ActiveX software and the Videum SDK (Software Development Kit). 1 J300 +3.3V +3.3V +3.3V I/O 7 I/O 6 I/O 5 I/O 4 I²C SCL I²C SDA I/O 3 I/O 2 I/O 1 I/O 0 GND GND GND PCB When an I/O is configured as an input, the output FET s are off, creating high impedance input with a weak pull-up to +3.3V. If the I/O is configured as an output, then the output FETs are active depending on the state of the Output Port register. Note: Care should be exercised if an external voltage is applied to an I/O configured as an output because of the low impedance (220 Ohm) path that exists between the pin and either +3.3V or GND. page 7

Modifying Video Input Termination Each video input is terminated with 75 Ohm. For proper video reception this termination is required. In some cases, termination is not desired, for example: The card is inserted into an existing video link via a T-piece. All inputs are fed from one video source, for example, to provide streams with different resolutions from the same video stream. Several Videum cards are cascaded or run in parallel to other video equipment. In these cases, the video termination requires a video amplifier or repeater. This can be avoided by individually disabling the termination by removing the jumper. One termination must remain per video link and be as close as possible to the end of the whole link. If the jumper is removed, the video termination is disabled. If the jumper is replaced, the video termination is enabled (default). page 8

CONNECTING VIDEO AND AUDIO SOURCES This section describes how to connect your video sources to the Videum board. The breakout cable or the Videum breakout box (BOB) can be used. Connecting Video Sources via Breakout Cable To connect the Videum board with the breakout cable: 1. Plug the cable into the Videum board s DVI connector. 2. Plug the cable s BNC connectors into your Video IN source. 3. Plug the cable s XLR connectors into your balanced stereo Audio In and Audio OUT. Assembling the BOB The breakout box can be assembled either as a standalone or attached to a rackmount BOB bracket then mounted onto a rack. If you DO NOT have a rackmount BOB bracket, simply attach the front panel label to the BOB. The following drawing illustrates the front panel. If you DO have a rackmount BOB bracket, do the following: 1. Attach the BOB to the rackmount BOB bracket in one of the four positions. Using 2 screws insert them from the bottom of the rackmount BOB bracket into the bottom of the BOB and tighten.! page 9

2. The rackmount BOB bracket is designed for 4 BOBs. The following photo shows a rackmount BOB bracket with 4 BOBs. 3. Attach the front panel label to the BOB and attach blank labels to the unused positions. 4. Attach the rackmount BOB bracket onto your rack. Connecting Video Sources via Breakout Box This section describes how to connect video sources to your Videum board via the breakout box (BOB). 1. Attach the A/V Media cable to the DVI connector on the BOB. Carefully align the cable plug with the DVI connector and insert. Rear Side of Breakout Box page 10!

2. Attach the other end of the A/V Media cable to the capture card s DVI connector. Note: Be careful handling the A/V Media cable and the pins inside the shrouded cable plug. Bending the cable or pins my cause internal damage to the signal wires and/or shielding wires and result in A/V signal quality degradation or complete signal loss. 3. Attach your video and audio sources to the BOB. Front side of Breakout Box Vid1/Y, Vid2/C, Vid3/C, Vid4/Y All inputs can be used as independent composite video inputs. With the help of an adapter cable (2 x BNC to 4pin MIN DIN) two paired inputs will together build an S-Video interface. Vid1 and Vid2 build together S-Video Input Vin-Y/C1. Vid3 and Vid4 build together S-Video Input Vin-Y/C2. Audio Out (balanced) The audio output can be used for monitoring purpose as input for a professional amplifier. The balanced audio output amplifier supports an impedance > 600 OHM. Audio In 1 and Audio In 2 (both are balanced inputs) Both inputs are used to connect to audio sources which do not require a pre-amplifier. Note: It is recommended using balanced audio equipment to guarantee the best audio quality. However unbalanced audio devices are also supported. page 11!

INSTALLING THE VIDEUM SOFTWARE The Videum Software CD contains the Drivers required for using the Videum board, applications, and documentation. Note: If the Found New Hardware Wizard popup appears after you start up your system, be sure to cancel out of it. 1. Start your computer and insert the Videum Software CD. 2. From the Videum Software CD menu, select your preferred language and click to run Setup. Alternatively, run the Setup.exe application directly from the root directory of the CD. The installer guides you through the software installation process. It is recommended that you use the defaults. page 12
