Data Services Jargon Buster Confused by all our names and acronyms when we talk about our Data Services? Don t worry, sometimes we even confuse ourselves! That s why we ve created this jargon buster, a handy guide to help you understand all the ABCs and terminology we use. Even better, you can use this for training purposes so everyone will be able to understand the Data Services dictionary! Let s get started.
General terminology 21C network Our core, next-generation network used for carrying our data services across the country. ADSL Application Programming Interface a set of rules used as an interface by software components to communicate with each other. For example, when you copy and paste in Windows, it is the API that allows this to work. API Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, also commonly known as Broadband - a standard Internet connection delivered over a copper phone line.
General terminology The fee associated with installing the phone lines or cables for broadband at your premises. Connection charge Gbps Bandwidth The maximum amount of data which can be sent over a data connection. Gigabits per second or billions of bits per second - a unit of measurement referring to the speed of data movement. Faster than Mbps.
General terminology IP Internet Protocol, the technology used to carry data over the Internet VoIP Megabits per second - a bit like Gbps but smaller! Mbps Voice over Internet Protocol, also known as hosted voice a method of providing phone calls over the Internet on a physical phone.
Products and Services EFM Ethernet Provides a dedicated connection to the Internet using a local area network to interconnect computers and carry data and voice internally. Or in other words: a MASSIVE broadband connection. Ethernet in the First Mile an Ethernet connection from a customer s premise to the network. The first mile is the name given to the part of a public communication network between a telecoms company (like us!) to the customer s premises. The one everyone is talking about - faster Internet delivered by fibre optic cable either to the street (FTTC) or to the premises (FTTP). Fibre broadband
Products and Services Fibre to the Cabinet - commonly known as superfast broadband and uses fibre to carry data, as opposed to copper, all the way from the telephone exchange to your house or office from the exchange to the cabinet nearest to you. FTTC FTTP Generic Ethernet Access a data service delivered by FTTC (and FTTP) to connect to an Ethernet network Fibre to the Premises a pure fibre optic cable connection that runs from a provider (like BT Wholesale) directly to the user s premises (home or business). Products and Services ISDN2e ISDN30 A standard landline phone connection (Public Switched Telephone Network), useful to provide customers traditional telephone fixed lines. Service that offers two phone channels and low-speed data connections. Cost-effective connectivity for small and mediumsized enterprises. Service that allows between 8-30 connections, helping larger enterprise customers communicate effectively. PSTN
Other Jargon Downstream/ Download and Upstream/ Upload Service Level Agreement part of commercial contracts that set out our commitment to provide services to an agreed quality SLA The speed at which you transfer data to and from your service provider over your Internet connection.
Other Jargon SLG A small-to-medium sized enterprise. Service Level Guarantee this specifies your entitlement to compensation if the SLA is not met. SME
