Grade 8 Position Summary Under broad guidance, the UNIX Administrator is responsible for: a. Acting as the principal point of contact and the prime source of technical knowledge for UNIX enterprise mid-tier systems support in a primarily HP-UX Environment with basic functional knowledge of the Red Hat Linux Operating System; this includes having an advisory role for new purchases, hands-on technical assistance for end users, installation and maintenance, and upgrading of mid-tier software and licensing b. Supporting and maintaining UNIX network systems software (and UNIX variants) consisting primarily of HP-UX systems and applications as well as various businessfunction-specific software applications throughout the enterprise affected by the UNIX platform c. Demonstrating broad knowledge in HP-UX UNIX administration, Disaster Recovery procedures, software installation, license management, and maintenance upgrades d. Developing and maintaining network security plans for the UNIX platform e. Operating with minimal supervision in a team environment of enterprise software developers and analysts f. Serving as a subject matter expert and in an advisory capacity in the field of UNIX, supports the vision, planning, and logistics of the IT Division ensuring that present and future IT needs are aligned with the HRSD Strategic Plan g. Supporting UNIX-Based systems within and across departments connected to a local area network and the organization s Wide Area Network (WAN); coordinates all hardware and software support services for the UNIX platform Examples of Position Duties a. Serves as member of the ITD Quality Steering Team (QST) b. Works on organizational initiatives with various teams coordinating and providing both advice and assistance c. Analyzes existing UNIX systems designs in determining future hardware and software application requirements d. Performs load balancing, resource allocation and performance tuning on UNIX platforms in an HP9000-Oracle production environment e. Assists in UNIX specific enterprise resource planning, and coordination throughout HRSD f. Researches, analyzes, and evaluates the use of new and existing UNIX technologies with the focus on eliminating redundancy of deployed technologies through integration/consolidation Page 1 of 5
g. Develops/provides effective methodologies for IT asset management regarding UNIX and EMC storage and control insuring inventory accuracy and software licensing compliance for the UNIX platform h. Education a) A.S. or A.A.S. in a related field such as computer programming, management information systems, networking, computer operations etc. b) HP-UNIX Certified System Administrator (CSA) Desired c) Bachelor s degree preferred; formal technical training and certification equivalent to industry certification at the systems administrator level desirable b. Experience a) Five or more years experience maintaining HP-UX systems in a small-to mid-size, multi-site company with small and mid-tier production platforms operating within a Wide Area Networked environment (>1000 employees) Page 3 of 5
b) Must have a minimum of 3 year s hands-on experience in: designing, configuring, and implementing UNIX systems and networks in an HP9000-Oracle production environment c) Ability to support HP-UX Systems consisting of PA-RISC based RP class machines for system level applications and utilities for production, testing and development including; networking, operating systems, integration, patching and kernel development d) Integrate, implement, maintain and support HP Service Guard for multinode failover support e) Designing, configuring and implementing advanced network capabilities; TCP/IP Networking technologies and problem determination f) Detailed technical understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, FTP, and SMTP g) Familiarity with system-based security including host-based firewalls, patch management and anti-malware tools and best UNIX security practices h) Vulnerability assessment experience on UNIX server systems i) Administration of numerous variants of the UNIX operating system (i.e. Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Linux); utilize POSIX scripting via KornShell (ksh), PERL, ANCI C, secure shell other shell scripting methods as required j) Implementation of network-based services/protocols (i.e., NFS, NIS, LDAP, SAMBA/CIFS) k) Securing Internet services on UNIX platforms (i.e., web-enabled services, mail services, encrypted file transfer protocols); Developing secure configuration guides for the Unix operating system; Using open source tools to secure and validate the configuration of the UNIX operating system; Using computer forensics techniques and tools to investigate security incidents involving resources using the UNIX operating system l) Demonstrated competency with all aspects of Unix, especially HP-UX administration (NFS, auto-mount, RAID Storage, network attached storage, Legato / Disaster Recovery, HTTP, FTP, SMTP, TCP/IP, KSH, SH, PERL, CRON, performance monitoring, kernel performance tuning, security, hardware troubleshooting, vendor relations, capacity planning, documentation m) Extensive knowledge of HP-UX specific tools such as: SAM, SCM, LVM, Ignite-UX n) Demonstrated experience in disaster recovery and planning of HP-UX systems via Legato and Ignite-UX 2. Desired a) Industry Professional Technical Competency certification equivalent to HP-UX CSA, ASE, CISSP, CCIE, etc. b) Experience with EMC SAN Storage systems and EMC Control Center; familiarity with industrial best practices on network, data replication, security, and data exchange. Enterprise Architecture Design- Oracle, XML, and LDAP experience highly desired c) HP Openview monitoring and optimization d) HP-UX environment LDAP integration e) UNIX Support of Oracle RAC with 9i or 10g Environment f) Taurus / Bridgeware migration planning from the MPE / HP3000 platform c. Personnel in this category are fully qualified at a Grade 8 with an appropriate Associate s Degree and 5 years experience maintaining HP-UX systems, 3 year s hands-on experience in an HP9000-Oracle production environment, and the experience qualifications as outlined in the experience section of this job description; the following training levels and experience requirements are established for personnel who are not fully qualified: 8a 8b A.S. or A.A.S. in a related field and all required experience as outlined in the experience section of this job description; completion of 50% of coursework and testing leading to certification as an HP-UNIX Systems Administrator A.S. or A.A.S. in a related field and all required experience as outlined in the experience section of this job description with no HP-UX Systems Administrator certification d. Job-specific Technical Competencies a) Broad Functional knowledge of UNIX computer hardware and software platforms, network topologies and solutions architecture including HP-UX 11i (all versions) at the enterprise level b) Basic principles of finance and the budgetary process related to Mid-Tier Systems analysis and design (business continuity, disaster recovery, etc.) c) Ability to develop highly effective working relationships with all HRSD Directors, Chiefs, Managers, and employees e.
