Measuring For Roller Shades

Measuring For Roller Shades Tip: Use a metal tape measure. A cloth tape may stretch and distort measurements. Be sure to measure every window. Some may appear identical and often are not.

Inside Frame Measurement Inside mounted treatments are recessed within the window opening. When the shade is mounted inside the frame it gives a clean, custom built-in look Tip: For the shade to fit in the window frame, the jamb extension must be 2 3/4 deep or greater. For larger shades the depth may need to be 4. When ordering shades that will be mounted inside a frame it is a good idea to request a deduction. The fabricator will then take a minor deduction to the width to ensure the brackets do not bind when installed. When you fill out the shade request on-line specify the shade measurement type as inside frame and a deduction will be added to your quote.

Inside Frame Measurements Width (3 locations) Height Top Center Bottom Measure the width at the top, center, and bottom of the opening. Use the narrowest of the 3 measurements. Measure the height of the opening.

Inside Frame Shade Light Gap Dimensions may change based on motor and assembly The red line represents the light gap A motor always must be wider than the fabric The width of the opening dictates the maximum width of the motor, mounting hardware and brackets A fabricator builds the treatment based on the opening size The shade material must be narrower than the motor, there is a space between the fabric and the sides of the opening The width of the light gap varies based on a motor type and the size of the treatment The light gap on low voltage motors is typically 5/8 The light gap on a line voltage motor ranges from 1 1/8 to 1¼ The distance on both sides is not always equal (See example image) In most residential applications the light gap falls on a trim molding so the glass is fully covered

Inside Frame Blackout Rails + Sills For true blackout applications order a set of rails and sills Rails and sills are metal U channels mounted to the sides and bottom Blackout material falls in the U channel to block light and fill the light gap * The side rail is shown in orange to highlight it in the illustration. Rails and sills are white or brown and can be painted. They are available up to 20 long Felt / Pile 1.75 Hem Bar & Fabric Edge ride inside the channel

Surface Mount Shade Measurements Outside mounted treatments mount either on the wood frame or above the window They will make a window appear bigger and hide unattractive windows Use an outside mount when there is not sufficient depth for inside mounting

Outside Frame Measurements Height Width Outside Bracket (OB) Measurement: This is the most popular surface mount measurement technique Measure the exact area to be covered Include overlap on the surrounding wall or frame The motor mounts directly to the top molding and is built to the same width as the window and molding Cloth Measurement: The architecture of the room dictates that the cloth must cover a specific area The motor and brackets can extend past the width of the window and molding

Outside Bracket vs. Cloth Measurement Outside Bracket (OB) Measurement Outside Bracket (OB) The width of the motor and brackets are even with the molding outer edge There is a light gap which varies based on the motor type and size of the window treatment Cloth Measurement The motor and bracket expand beyond the sides of the window The cloth covers the area specified on the order Cloth Measurement

Outside Bracket Measurement Light Gap Outside Bracket (OB) Measurement Dimensions may change based on motor and assembly The red line represents the light gap A motor always must be wider the the fabric The width of the opening dictates the maximum width of the motor, mounting hardware and brackets A fabricator builds the treatment based on the molding width The shade material must be narrower than the motor, there is a space between the fabric and the sides of the opening The width of the light gap varies based on a motor type and the size of the treatment The light gap on low voltage motors is typically 5/8 The light gap on a line voltage motor ranges from 1 1/8 to 1 ¼ The distance on both sides is not equal (See example image) On request, the light gap distance can be provided with any quote In most residential applications the light gap falls on a trim molding so the glass is covered

Head Pockets New Construction For a hidden, professional installation use an aluminum head pocket Installs above the window The lower removable plate leaves a slot for the fabric to hang Integrated rails makes installing brackets quick and easy Order to the width of the treatment Use a 4 pocket when using 24VDC Use a 5½ pocket when using 110VAC Removable plate New Construction Head Pocket

110VAC Pre-wire AC Outlet Hidden by a valance Cat5 for RS-485 or contact closure Run AC wiring to the motor location. All motors recommended by Worthington Distribution only require 14/2 + GND, for the option of non-intelligent motors, run 14/3 + GND The motor wiring is traditionally hidden by a valance (not supplied) For non-rts applications run a Cat5 for control

Power: 12VDC Solar Power Solar charging kit: 9015575 Solar Battery Charger 5 year warranty Mounts in a window and charges the battery Solar batteries must be charged before use Order a SOM9015781 Pre-installation AC charger Typical pre-installation charge is 24 hours

Power: 12VDC Battery or AC Re-loadable battery tube: 9014020 Battery Y cable: 9015580 12VDC Plug-in Power Supply: 1822192 Re-loadable Battery Tube Use with 8 lithium batteries (9014834) For extended battery life or heavy treatments, use a 9105580 Y cable to wire two tubes in parallel Dual battery wands typically extend battery life by 75 percent Add Wall Mounting Clips for the Battery Tube (9013263) 1 pair Plug-In Power Supply A great solution when wires can be run

24VDC Pre-wire 16/2 (150 ) 14/2 (200 ) Cat5 for RS-485 or contact closure Run 16/2 for up to 150 Run 14/2 for up to 200 When shades are moving together, it is best if the wire lengths are the same Voltage drop affects motor speed For non-rts applications run a Cat5 for control

Power: 24VDC When installing jobs with 3 or more 24VDC motors, Somfy Power Panels are strongly recommended They save time, provide a professional installation, and have individual fuses They do have a cost premium; however, they quickly pay for themselves because they install in minutes When using RS-485, the communication ports make programming a snap Power supplies and power distribution boards are available for ala carte installations The least expensive power option is the SOM1822209 1.25A plug-in power supply Substituting non-somfy power supplies is not recommended May be non-regulated causing voltage issues May be non-filtered leading to a noisy motor

Connecting the HAI 12 VDC SDN Network SDN Ports SDN Network Move the jumper on the serial port to the right 2 pins (RS-485) Use the Worthington Distribution SOMHAICBL cable to plug into an SDN Network port The typical connection point for the SOMHAICLB will use an SDN Network port on the Somfy Power/Data board (for 24VDC) or on the ILT Tap (for 110VAC) The ILT Tap needs 12VDC A 9-12VDC power supply can be connected to the connector (labeled as 9VDC, 12VDC is OK) Phantom power from the J1 power/data board for the ST-30 (use when mixing 110VAC and 24VDC motors)

Programming the HAI with SDN When using Somfy SDN (Somfy Digital Network) ILT (110VAC) and RS-485 (24VDC) communicating motors set the serial port to Somfy ILT (even when using RS-485 motors) Read each motor address from the ILT2-ST30 software Remember to have 1 motor powered at a time and no 3 rd party controllers attached Under Units in the HAI, change the House Code to Somfy Name the Shade Click the far right address Type the address from the ILT2-ST30 software into the PCAccess Address Repeat for additional shades

Shade Movement In the ILT2 Software Movement Manual control of the shade 0 next to Down Limit is not supported Jog Not used with roller shads (tilt motor feature) Abs Position You can type in a pulse number to place the shade in a specific location Rel Position Type in a percentage from 0-100% Go to IP Go to a pre-programmed Intermediate Position (typically not used with 3 rd party controllers) Motor speed can be changed in the ST-30 motor Click ST-30 at the top and ST-30 Speed Settings will appear at the bottom GET: Get ST-30 Speeds CLEAR: Clear speeds from screen not the motor SET: Sends the speed to the motor Roll Speed: UP/DOWN Speed (6-28 RPM) Slow Speed: Not used with roller shades

Group addresses in the ILT2 Software Group addresses allow more than 1 shade to be controlled by a single command Group address are typically not used with 3 rd party controller, it is often easier to send level commands This slide is to document the procedure, it is only recommended when a large number of shades need to move at the exact same time Remember 1 motor powered at a time and no 3rd party controllers attached The 16 blanks under Group Addresses represent the 16 potential groups that the motor can join As the installer, you assign group numbers Each group is 6 characters from 0 F Keep things simple and use a scheme like 000001 000016 (If you need 16 groups) Type the addresses you will need into the box(s) Press Set to send the addresses to the motor When Addresses are sent to the motor is it is a good habit to press clear and then Get to verify the values Repeat the process for each motor (one at a time)

Group addresses in the ILT2 Software Testing groups Connect All of the motors to the SDN Network In the ILT2 Software, click Disconnect and then Connect Type a group number into the left white box in Addressing a the top of the screen Click the button next to Group Use the Movement buttons to test the Group Communication If using an HAI (or 3 rd party equivalent) you can choose the Address Type as Group instead of Motor

Intermediate Positions in the ILT2 Software Pre-Sets are typically not used with 3 rd party controller, this slide is for documentation only Get Reads the current positions in the motor Clear Removes current information from the screen but not the motor IP Calculations The software automatically sets 3/4/10 or 16 IPs based on the current limits Clear All IP s removes the IPs on the screen AND in the motor Set IP s pushes the values in the IP boxes to the motor When IPs are sent to the motor is it is a good habit to press clear and then Get to verify the values

HAI ios Interface: SDN Network When the Somfy Digital Network is integrated with HAI, the ios interface shows the shade state and changes the movement icons to Up/Down
