HANDOUT TOP REASONS TO CHOOSE DELL EMC OVER VEEAM 10 This handout overviews the top ten reasons why customers choose Data Protection from Dell EMC over Veeam. Dell EMC has the most comprehensive data protection portfolio in the industry, including our leading Data Domain platform of hardware & software offerings and our comprehensive Data Protection Suite that offers traditional backup, cloud backup, snapshot protection, and disaster recovery all in one package. The new Integrated Data Protection Appliance (IDPA) is a great addition to this portfolio and provides 90% faster box-to-backup than traditional deployments. In addition, Dell EMC also offers Data Management products that are all about self-service, enabling protection Service Level Objectives and analytics, and In-Cloud protection offerings for SaaS protection, traditional app protection, and protection of data on devices such as mobile phones, desktops and laptops. It s a broad portfolio that enables our customers to cover all their Data Protection needs all in one place. 1 Dell EMC protects data wherever it is, against whatever happens Dell EMC offers an all-encompassing data protection solution for virtual as well as physical and Cloud environments. With Dell EMC, customers can deploy based on their current requirements and easily add functionality, as the business requires. Wherever your data resides, whatever your data protection needs, Dell EMC has the solution to deliver the right level of data protection based on its business criticality. Dell EMC brings value by offering a solution that covers the entire Data Protection Continuum-spanning all protection tiers including Continuous Availability, Continuous Replication, Snapshot Management, Backup/Recovery, and Archive. Deploying a single-vendor data protection infrastructure provides the following benefits: Reduced IT budget spent on data protection Reduced risk of unplanned downtime Reduced cost of unplanned downtime Reduced risk of data loss Reduced data lost when data loss occurs Dell EMC s leading data protection solution for virtualized environments include the Data Protection Suite Family, specifically Data Protection Suite for VMware, and Data Domain. Data Domain systems deliver high-speed, variable length deduplication to significantly reduce storage requirements, and its tight integration with the Data Protection Suite Family s backup applications provide customers with even greater deduplication rates. The Data Protection Suite Family also offers virtual synthetic backups allowing you to maintain a current full backup on the Data Domain system using a series of incremental backups. Data Domain systems offer the highest levels of data integrity to ensure reliable recovery and DD Boost speeds backups by up to 50% by enabling client-side deduplication. These capabilities and tight integration save storage and bandwidth, and also increase the speed of the backup. Additionally, RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines, a key component of Data Protection Suite for VMware, allows for continuous replication. It is a software-based replication solution for any point-intime recovery. Top 1 Reasons to Choose Dell EMC over Veeam

Veeam is a point-product vendor, whose solution is designed to protect only virtualized environments. Consequently, Veeam customers require 3rd party software for the non-virtualized parts of their environment and 3rd party hardware for backup storage. Veeam s multi-vendor approach adds complexity, risk, and cost to the data protection infrastructure. At the same time, Veeam s model does not fit the protection needs of every workload; and lacks the ability to meet the protection requirements of business critical applications and data. Veeam cannot ensure that vital data will stay available no matter what happens. In fact, Veeam has no solution for Continuous Availability, Continuous Replication, or Archive. 2 Dell EMC Data Protection empowers virtualization administrators Dell EMC enables organizations to empower their VMware Administrators to manage the data protection of applications and VMs using their native vsphere Web Client interface. At the same time, Backup Administrators control the backup policies that are used when data protection is provisioned by the VMware Administrator. Dell EMC offers tight integration into all VMware interfaces including vsphere, vcenter, vrealize and vcloud Director enabling organizations to offer Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS). Veeam does not offer the same level of tight integration into VMware interfaces. Veeam cannot empower Virtualization Administrators or Users to the depth provided by Dell EMC. Veeam has no integration into vrealize Automation or vcloud Director. Thus, Veeam does not offer a solution that provides organizations with the ability to offer self-service data protection. Additionally, Veeam s Plug-in for vsphere Web Client does not allow VMware Administrators to manage backup and recovery for VMs- it only allows monitoring of VM backups. 3 Dell EMC also empowers application owners with tight integration It is the application owner, not the Backup Administrator, who best understands the business value of application data and the protection needed to ensure business continuity. Dell EMC data protection solutions deliver advanced application integration by directly integrating with an application using Data Domain Boost for Enterprise Applications, as well as directly integrating with primary storage using EMC ProtectPoint. This advanced integration empowers DBAs to control their own backup and recovery using the native utilities that they are already familiar with, such as Oracle RMAN, which eliminates unnecessary storage silos. Additionally, DD Boost for Enterprise Applications speeds backup by up to 50% through client-side deduplication. ProtectPoint enables 20x faster backup for mission critical applications by integrating directly with primary storage (EMC VMAX3 or XtremIO) to send data directly to Data Domain, eliminating excess infrastructure. Dell EMC enables organizations to empower application owners by giving them full control of backup and recovery from within their native UI. By leveraging Dell EMC s deduplication technology, application owners enjoy faster backup and recovery, as well as more efficient resource utilization. Dell EMC ensures application-consistent protection of enterprise applications. Dell EMC data protection offers a series of application-specific agents that cover tier 1 applications, including but not limited to Microsoft, SAP, IBM DB2, and Oracle. Veeam, however, has nothing for applications that do not support VSS- meaning Veeam does not provide support for anything but Microsoft. In these scenarios, customers must create custom pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts and instruct Veeam to run them for the VMs with such applications. Veeam still forces application owners to rely on the Backup Administrator, and does not optimize their protection processes. 4 Dell EMC has the most efficient deduplication on the market Dell EMC enables organizations to reduce the cost and complexity of their data protection infrastructure, while delivering on business SLAs. Dell EMC s superior deduplication reduces backup storage and bandwidth requirements, while also delivering faster backup and recovery. Top 2 Reasons to Choose Dell EMC over Veeam

Dell EMC s unique technology provides variable-length deduplication, global deduplication across sites and clients, and efficient client-side deduplication with DD Boost. EMC Data Domain was built from the ground up with data deduplication and data integrity in mind. Deduplication is not a bolt-on to a tape-centric solution. Therefore, Data Domain does not suffer from the performance and scale limitations that bolt-on architectures have. This translates into less infrastructure needed to support performance and retention SLAs. With Data Domain s superior deduplication, costs and bandwidth usage are reduced, providing a tremendous impact at scale. In fact, Data Domain s high-speed, variable-length deduplication reduces storage requirements by 10 to 30x, providing a huge storage savings. Veeam s technology is inferior to Dell EMC in that it does not offer the same level of storage reduction or reduced network consumption. Also, Veeam cannot match Dell EMC s performance for backup or recovery. For instance, customers using Data Domain with the Data Protection Suite Family average higher deduplication rates than Data Domain customers using a thirdparty application. We typically see that Dell EMC s data reduction is at least double the efficiency of Veeam s data reduction. The technical limitations of Veeam s deduplication are: fixed-length deduplication, fractured deduplication at the backup-job level, and inefficient source-side deduplication. This results in additional processing cycles spent checking VMs for redundant data blocks. 5 Dell EMC has the fastest backup & recovery in the industry Dell EMC s superior deduplication and multi-stream backup jobs deliver faster backup and recovery. Dell EMC offers daily full backups at the cost of incremental backups; therefore accelerating backups and making recoveries faster, simpler, and more reliable. With Dell EMC data protection solutions, customers can replicate backup and archive data off-site faster and reduce bandwidth requirements by 99% for safe, efficient disaster recovery. The Data Protection Suite Family provides backup and restore awareness across sites utilizing cloning and a tight integration with Data Domain. With the Data Protection Suite Family, there is no need to search tapes when recovering data. All backups are full backups ensuring efficient recovery, and recovery data is sent compressed. In customer environments we see that Dell EMC backups are up to 9 times faster than Veeam, which is particularly important in large environments and organizations with strict SLAs. Veeam s backup jobs are single-stream, forcing customers to choose between speed and deduplication: put many VMs in a single backup job to get higher deduplication, but get lower speed; or create more backup jobs with less VMs per job to get higher speed, but fracture the deduplication. Additionally, Veeam recommends forever incrementals, which provide slower restores than the daily full backups Dell EMC offers. 6 Dell EMC provides the highest scalability Dell EMC offers the most scalable data protection solution in several ways. Superior deduplication and faster backup and recovery allow organizations to scale without the need to create and manage more backup policies, thus simplifying backup management as data grows. Dell EMC also simplifies scalability by orchestrating and automating the infrastructure deployment and management processes. Automated Proxy Deployment and Intelligent Proxy Selection automatically deploy and manage proxies in a quick and simple fashion, while also achieving optimal performance. Dell EMC enables organizations to manage data protection at scale in an easy manner by offering Data Protection as a Service (DPaaS), which provides agile and efficient data protection, built on self-service, automation, and policy-based governance. Veeam cannot match the scalability of Dell EMC. In environments surpassing 1,000 VMs, Veeam becomes more cumbersome to scale in comparison to Dell EMC. Veeam s less efficient backup and restore jobs require creating and managing more backup jobs and proxies, which results in unnecessary complexity and costs. Moreover, Veeam has no way to automate proxy deployment. Top 3 Reasons to Choose Dell EMC over Veeam

Additionally, Veeam cannot simplify management and delivery of data protection for large environments by offering DPaaS, considering it does not provide key integrations into vcenter, vcloud Director, and vrealize Automation. As a result, VMware Administrators and users cannot manage their own backups and recoveries. 7 Dell EMC simplifies data protection lifecycle management Dell EMC simplifies data protection lifecycle management from initiation of the backup through expiration, by chaining multiple tasks (backup, cloning, archiving) into policies, which act as enterprise-level data protection plans. Dell EMC also provides snapshot management retention policies which manage the lifecycles of the snapshot savesets. Data Protection Plans represent service tiers, such as Gold or Platinum, and simplify the process of protecting data, improve operator productivity, and enable an enterprise IT department to move closer to a DPaaS model. Veeam does not offer such functionality and can require Backup Administrators to configure and manage up to 5 more tasks than Dell EMC. 8 Business continuity thanks to Dell EMC s continuous availability solution Continuous access to information is absolutely critical for businesses of all sizes. Any interruption to the availability of applications or data has a huge impact to business in terms of productivity, reputation and bottom line. Yet, many organizations do not have a Data Protection strategy providing the Continuous Availability required by the business. EMC VPLEX enables businesses to keep running without disruption, no matter what. VPLEX delivers Continuous Availability for mission critical workloads across multiple data centers so that even in the event of a complete site failure there is no impact on mission critical applications. Businesses will not be impacted by any planned (i.e. maintenance, tech refresh or upgrades) or unplanned (i.e. natural disasters, power outages etc.) downtime. Veeam, on the other hand, cannot protect businesses from interruption in case of data loss. Veeam cannot ensure 100% application uptime, as the best they can do is Near-Continuous Data Protection (CDP), for RPO and RTO of 15 minutes at best. While Near-CDP might be good-enough for a portion of customers environment, it is not satisfactory for mission critical applications and data. If those fail, Veeam cannot enable the business to continue to operate without interruption. Before settling for good-enough, organizations should quantify the total cost of business disruption to application and data availability and the time it would take to get back to business-as-usual. 9 Dell EMC offers continuous data protection for any point-in-time recovery The Dell EMC RecoverPoint family, consisting of RecoverPoint and RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines, empowers organizations to protect the growing scale of their physical and virtualized IT infrastructure by simplifying and automating the data protection and recovery workflow for their mission critical applications and data. These products are a vital piece of Dell EMC data protection and availability solutions, considering they make disaster recovery and operational recovery easy for organizations with continuous data protection for recovery to any Point in Time (PiT), thus optimizing RPO and RTO. Veeam, on the other hand, can only offer near-continuous Data protection. Specifically, they cannot offer synchronous replication and limit the retention period of each VM replica to only 28 restore points. This provides a very limited recovery granularity that cannot address all Disaster Recovery and Operational Recovery use cases. Top 4 Reasons to Choose Dell EMC over Veeam

Veeam is unable to provide a solution that provides near-zero downtime. If customers SLAs require protection of mission critical applications and data requiring higher protection SLAs than what snapshot or backup can deliver, Veeam does not have a solution for them. 10 Dell EMC has superior enterprise-class services and support Dell EMC enables organizations to get the most out of their data protection strategy by offering Enterprise-class Professional Services and Support. Dell EMC Professional Services includes a team of highly skilled engineers that size, architect, and deploy Dell EMC solutions. Additionally, Dell EMC can offer Onsite Support to make sure customers get the most reactive response if they encounter issues. Dell EMC customers have peace of mind knowing their solution will be deployed and configured in optimal fashion. If issues occur; Dell EMC readily provides first-class support. Veeam does not offer Professional Services, nor do they train their resellers to deploy their software. Resellers are only expected to complete a 3-day training in order to sell Veeam, which is enough for smaller environments; however, tends to become a risk for environments with more than 1,000 VMs. This lack of training combined with a larger protection environment can lead to incorrect sizing and sub-optimal deployment of the infrastructure, as well as improper configuration of backup policies. Moreover, Veeam does not provide Onsite Support, only addressing customers issues via Email or over the phone. If Veeam cannot solve the issues remotely, customers are on their own or must rely on the reseller, who might not have the time or qualified personnel to adequately intervene when trouble arises.
