Important Information The TASCAM 2488 is a mains powered unit. It is necessary to remove the TASCAM 2488 covers when installing the HGR-2488 PRISM module, which results in the open frame mains power supply being made accessible. TO AVOID THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK ALWAYS UNPLUG THE MAINS CABLE FROM THE WALL SOCKET AND FROM THE TASCAM 2488 PRIOR TO REMOVING ANY COVERS. Do not power the TASCAM 2488 with the covers removed. What's In The Box The following items are provided: HGR-2488 PRISM Circuit Assembly Ribbon cable for video output 2 cable ties Please Note: The latest version of the installation instructions can be downloaded from www.hgr.co.uk/downloads.html Tools Needed You will require the following tools when installing the HGR-2488 PRISM A #1 Philips head screwdriver Small side cutters or nail scissors A table to work on A soft blanket to lay the TASCAM 2488 on during installation Before you install the HGR-2488 PRISM Back up your songs. It is advised that you back up your TASCAM 2488 songs and data prior to installing the HGR-2488 PRISM. Whilst this may take a number of hours it is good practice. Note that there is no modification required to the hard drive or hard drive connections in the TASCAM 2488 during the installation. This is just a precautionary step. Page 2 of 8
Removing the TASCAM 2488 bottom cover Remove the power cord from the wall socket and from the TASCAM 2488 Place a soft blanket on a table and place the TASCAM 2488 face down on the blanket. (This protects the TASCAM 2488 controls and display as well as the table s surface). Remove the 8 Type A Phillips screws in positions shown in the figure below Remove the 2 Type B Phillips screws in positions shown in the figure below. The Type B screws are a different length and type so keep them separate. Take the supplied video ribbon cable and feed the thin 8 way connector through the air vents in the TASCAM 2488 back cover, below the Tascam s LCD display, as shown below. You can now remove the back cover. Before doing so, be aware that there are cables connecting the TASCAM 2488 top and bottom case sections. As a result the back cover needs to be folded up and over away from the top section. Gently lift the metal cover upwards and fold it back on itself resting it behind the TASCAM 2488, as shown below. Installing the HGR-2488 PRISM The HGR-2488 PRISM is supplied in an anti-static bag to protect the electronics from damage due to static electricity. Do not remove the HGR-2488 PRISM module from the anti-static bag until required. Step 1: Unplug the LCD data connector from the TASCAM 2488 main board. Do not pull on the wires when doing this. If necessary use a small flat blade screwdriver to gently prise the connector from the main board housing, as shown below. You are now ready to install the HGR-2488 PRISM module. As a precaution discharge any static electricity on yourself by touching a metal water pipe, tap or central heating fixture. Page 4 of 8
Step 2: Remove the HGR-2488 PRISM module from the pink anti-static bag. Step 3: Connect the LCD data cable (unplugged in step 1) to CONN1 on the HGR-2488 PRISM module. Pin 1 on CONN1 is marked by a coloured dot. The LCD data cable pin 1 is identified by a black wire (see the photo in Step 1). This connector may be a tight fit so support the HGR-2488 PRISM CONN1 with your thumb as you apply pressure to the mating connector. If necessary use side cutters or nail scissors to cut any cable ties that are bundling the LCD data cable to any other cables. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT ANY WIRES IN THE PROCESS! CONN1 11 Way Cable Step 4: Connect the HGR-2488 PRISM 11 way cable to the TASCAM 2488 main board LCD connector, shown above. Again, Pin 1 is identified on the connector by a coloured dot and needs to align with Pin 1 of the TASCAM main board (pointed to by the screwdriver in the photo under Step 1). This may be a tight fit so gently ease the connector in. Do not apply excessive force. If necessary remove and re-insert the connector a few times until it is fully seated. Step 5: Connect the video ribbon cable to CONN5 of the HGR-2488 PRISM module. This connector is polarised so can only plug in one way round. Video ribbon cable plugged into CONN5 Step 6: On the back of the HGR-2488 PRISM module is a foam adhesive pad. Remove the protective paper from the pad and position the HGR-2488 PRISM above the LCD plastic cover, shown below. Page 5 of 8
LCD Cover Step 7: Gently push the HGR-2488 PRISM module against the LCD cover, to stick the module to the cover. At this point double check that all connections to the HGR-2488 PRISM and TASCAM 2488 are correctly and securely made. The module is now installed! Step 8: Seat the bottom cover back on the TASCAM 2488, ensuring no cables are trapped between the 2 halves of the casing. Secure the ribbon cable to the slots in the back cover using the provided cable ties. Do not over tighten the cable ties just enough to hold the ribbon cable in place. Step 9: Replace the Type A and Type B screws. Page 6 of 8
Testing the HGR-2488 PRISM Turn the TASCAM 2488 over so it is face up. Connect the ribbon cable to the PC monitor using a Male-to-Male VGA cable. (If your monitor has a fixed VGA cable then the separate Male-to-Male cable may not be required refer to the FAQ). Switch on the PC monitor Connect the TASCAM 2488 power cord Switch on the TASCAM 2488 If the installation has been successful you should see the HGR-2488 PRISM start up screen for a few seconds before both the LCD display and the PC monitor are displaying the TASCAM start up screens. The 2488 s LCD display is not modified by the HGR-2488 PRISM so it should look exactly as it did prior to the installation. After the HGR-2488 PRISM start up screen has been displayed for a few seconds the PC monitor will display the exact same information as on the TASCAM 2488 LCD display but with full colour. That s it. Job s done and it s looking great! The picture below shows the relative sizes of the TASCAM 2488 display and HGR-2488 PRISM display when viewed on a 19 monitor. Page 7 of 8
