Initial Setup & Testing System Components The following components are required to set up a working CD-ROM based audio sampler: Power Cord CD-ROM Player Switch Board & Panel Interface Cable (connects the CD-ROM Player to the Switch Board & Panel) Audio CD System Set-Up Procedure Set-up the system by doing the following: 1) Ensure that the voltage selection switch on the power supply of the CD-ROM player is set to the correct voltage for the location. 115Vac is standard for North America. 2) Connect the power cord between the CD-ROM player and an AC power source. 3) Turn the power on to the CD-ROM player by activating the power switch on the back of the unit. 4) Press the eject switch on the CD-ROM player to open the loading tray and mount the audio disc with the label side facing up onto the tray. 5) Press the eject switch on the CD-ROM player to close the loading tray. 6) Turn the power off to the CD-ROM player by de-activating the power switch on the back of the unit. 7) Connect the interface cable (20 conductor ribbon cable) to the 20-pin header located on the back of the CD- ROM player. Ensure that it is inserted to the point that the latches on the connector secure the cable in place. 8) Connect the other end of the interface cable to the 20-pin header located on the switch board. Self Test Routine The CD-ROM based audio samplers typically have a self-test routine that provides the end user with a way to identify possible problems with the system. This routine is started only at the initial power up (first time the power is activated) of the unit. When the power is turned on, the self-test routine will go through the following stages: 1) Key Test For the first three to five seconds, the unit will look for any switch to be activated on the switch board and if it sees a switch activated it will light the corresponding LED for that switch. When the switch is released, the LED will go out and the unit will look for another switch to be activated for up to three to five seconds more. If no switch is activated the unit moves onto the next self test stage. This test procedure is useful for:! Checking that all switches are working properly. If one has failed or is not working reliably, then it will not activate the LED when it is pressed.! If the artwork is mounted to the panel in such a way that it is jamming a switch into the activated position then the problem area will be indicated by the lit LED 3

2) LED Test The unit will then proceed to test the LED s by lighting all of them one at a time. Typically, this is started at the bottom of the panel and works its way back up to the LED in the top left most position. This test procedure is useful for:! Identifying that the switch panel control system is functioning properly (i.e.: it has a good power supply, the processor is running, etc.)! Verifying that all of the LED s are working properly. If one fails to light, then it indicates a problem with the switch board that should be serviced. 3) CD-ROM Player Test The unit will then proceed to test the CD-ROM player through the following steps:! Test the communication between the switch board and the CD-ROM player. If the switch board cannot communicate with or get a response from the CD-ROM player s control system then LED #1 will flash quickly for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the communication is established. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: # The microprocessor on the CD-ROM control board is not functioning # The interface cable is not connected properly # The interface cable is damaged or defective # The 20-pin header has been damaged on either the switch board or the CD-ROM player! Test the communication between the CD-ROM control board and the CD-ROM drive. The microprocessor on the CD-ROM control board does some preliminary testing of the CD-ROM drive to see if it is responding. If it cannot get a response from the drive then LED #2 will flash for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the CD-ROM drive responds to the commands. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: # The power cable is not connected to the CD-ROM drive # The EIDE 40 conductor ribbon cable is not connected to the CD-ROM drive # The EIDE 40 conductor ribbon cable is not connected to the control board # The EIDE 40 conductor ribbon cable is defective # The CD-ROM drive is not configured for the MASTER mode by the jumper installed on the pins to the left of the IDE Interface # The CD-ROM drive is just not functioning! The control board will send the commands to the CD-ROM drive to have it try to focus on and spin the disc. If the drive cannot focus on the disc or spin the disc then LED #3 will flash for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the CD-ROM drive gets the disc spinning and playing. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: # The CD-ROM drive has failed and cannot read the disc # The disc has been loaded upside down in the drive! The control board will send the commands to the CD-ROM drive to have it read the Table Of Contents (TOC) from the disc. If the drive cannot read the TOC or finds that the TOC is invalid for the system then LED #4 will flash for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the CD-ROM drive reads the TOC and finds it to be valid. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: 4

# The disc being used is not the right type for the system (i.e.: if the system is made to run with 16 tracks and a 12 track disc is loaded)! The control board will send the commands to the CD-ROM drive to have it search the first track on the disc. If the drive cannot search the first track properly or reliably then LED #5 will flash for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the CD-ROM is capable of searching the first track. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: # The CD-ROM drive is failing and cannot track properly on the disc! The control board will send the commands to the CD-ROM drive to have it search the last track on the disc. If the drive cannot search the last track properly or reliably then LED #6 will flash for 5 times then go off while it is re-tested. This will be repeated until the CD-ROM is capable of searching the last track. Possible causes for this error code to be flashed are: # The CD-ROM drive is failing and cannot track properly on the disc Repair Action Parts Replacement Serviceable Parts Listing The following components can be replaced in the field: Mitsumi FX4830T IDE CD-ROM Drive (may be sourced locally) IDE Interface cable length = 16 (may be sourced locally) AT style PC Power Supply - must be identical in size and power ratings (may be sourced locally) CD-ROM player control board (must be sourced through Technovision) CD-ROM player control board microprocessor (must be sourced through Technovision) Switch Board (must be sourced through Technovision) Switch Board microprocessor (must be sourced through Technovision) 20 Conductor Interface Cable (may be sourced locally) CD-ROM Replacement Instructions Disconnect the power cord from the unit prior to servicing it Remove the six black Philips screws from the side of the player s metal case (three from each side) Pull the cover off by holding the front or base and pulling gently on the cover towards the back of the unit Disconnect the audio cable (small gray 3-wire cable) from the drive by squeezing down its locking tab while pulling it out of the connector Pull the IDE interface cable (40 conductor gray ribbon cable) from the IDE interface connector on the CD- ROM drive.
