Introduction Managing switch paths in large test plans can be challenging. DUT s that have high pin count or multiple-up conigurations may require hundreds of individual paths during the course of a test plan. Switch executives can be very helpful when controlling a large number of switch paths. National Instruments Switch Executive uses information contained in the IVI switch driver to create and control valid paths for the switch. Keysight PXI switches are provided with IVI drivers, and as such can be used with the National Instruments Switch Executive (NI Switch Executive). The steps outlined in this application note provide a getting started guide for using Keysight s PXI switches with NI Switch Executive. Description The key components required consist of: Keysight PXI Switches Keysight I/O Libraries IVI Switch Drivers National Instruments Measurement & Automation Explorer Version 5.0 (MAX) National Instruments Switch Executive Version 3.50 Your Beneits Manage large number of switch paths easily Achieve correct switch paths Incorporate Keysight switches into existing test plans that use the NI Switch Executive Applications Wireless communications Aerospace and defense Radar and wideband signal capture Electronic test

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note Using Keysight PXI modules with National Instruments Switch Executive Managing switch paths in large test plans can be challenging. DUT s that have high pin count or multiple-up conigurations may require hundreds of individual paths during the course of a test plan. Switch path editors can help manage these large number of switch paths. One such switch path editor is the NI Switch Executive. The purpose of this application note is to show how Keysight PXI switches can be used with NI Switch Executive. The instrument drivers provided with Keysight switches follow the Interchangeable Virtual Instrument (IVI) switch class speciication. The signiicance of this is that the IVI driver contains switch topology information which is essential for creating correct switch paths. NI Switch Executive extracts the information from the IVI driver and creates the essential topology map to allow correct switch paths to be created. In order for Switch Executive to use the IVI driver for switching, an IVI driver session must be created and deined in the IviConigurationStore.xml ile. An editor for the coniguration store is built into National Instrument Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX) which makes creating and using Switch Executive routes relatively simple. The following notes and screenshots were made using NI MAX version 5 and NI Switch Executive version 3.5. Keep this in mind as minor graphic difference may occur if you are using a different revision level of software. Key steps for using Keysight PXI switches with NI Switch Executive 1. Install Keysight I/O libraries and IVI switch drivers 2. Use NI MAX to edit the IVI coniguration store and create a driver session 3. Use NI Switch Executive to create a Virtual Device and switch routes 4. Test the switch routes using NI Switch Executive Switch Panel The following steps can be followed with our without PXI hardware present. All of the switch route information is contained in the IVI driver itself. This can be helpful if developing software before your hardware has arrived. The following steps assume NI Switch Executive and MAX are both already installed on your system.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP ONE: Install and verify Keysight I/O Libraries and IVI switch drivers To utilize Keysight PXI switches, both the I/O libraries and the instrument IVI drivers are required. Both of these software components are available at the Keysight web site. Keysight I/O libraries The download is available at: www.keysight.com/ind/iosuite. Keysight IVI Drivers Available either with the disc shipped with your product or at the Keysight web site. See www.keysight.com/ind/drivers and search for your speciic switch model number. After the correct model number is found, select the executable and follow the prompts to install the driver. The majority of Keysight s PXI switches are controlled by one of two drivers: AgMSwitch or AgMWSwitch driver. Verify Installation After the Keysight I/O libraries and IVI drivers are installed, it is good practice to verify the installation. This is easiest to do with hardware present by simply opening up the Keysight connection expert (also known as ACE). To open ACE select: Start->All Programs ->Keysight IO Libraries Suit->Keysight Connection Expert Once ACE opens you can visually inspect to verify the Keysight Switch card appears in the correct slot and indicates the module part number as shown in Figure 1. Note the presence of the Keysight M9121A, M9130A and M9157C switch modules in slots 8, 11, and 13 respectively. Figure 1. Keysight Connection Expert showing PXI modules located in chassis The Keysight Connection Expert (ACE) will show all PXI modules present in the chassis. However, NI MAX does not show Keysight PXI modules. Do not be concerned that NI MAX does not show the Keysight switches as this is normal operation. Use ACE as the primary indication that Keysight modules are correctly installed.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP TWO: Edit the IVI coniguration store and create a driver session The irst step to using NI Switch Executive is to create an IVI driver session. The IVI driver session information is contained in a ile known as the IVI coniguration store. Details of the IVI coniguration store are beyond the scope of this application note and not necessary to know if just using NI Switch Executive. Detailed information can be found at the IVI foundation web site: www.ivifoundation.org. An IVI coniguration store editor is built into NI MAX which can be used when coniguring NI Switch Executive. The following steps demonstrate how to use the editor to create the driver sessions. 2.1 Create Driver Session 1 Open NI-MAX with Switch Executive by selecting in consecutive order: 1. Start > All Programs 2. National Instruments 3. NI Switch Executive 4. MAX with NI Switch Executive On the left side of MAX, select and expand IVI Drivers Right click on Driver Sessions then left click on Create New to create a new driver session. Rename the session as desired and press enter. In this case the driver session is named MyM9130A. 2.2 General Tab The Driver session editor as shown to the right will appear. Select the General tab for the next steps. The driver session set up can be done with or without the hardware present. Select the Simulate With dropdown box: If HW is present, set Simulate With to Don t Simulate If HW is not present, set Simulate With to Speciic Driver 1. The following screenshots will be for the case of HW present. In the event that you do not have HW present, differences, if any, will be called out in the text.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP TWO: Edit the IVI coniguration store and create a driver session (continued) 2.3 General Tab 1 The Driver Setup ield must be entered correctly. In the case of Keysight switches, enter the string Model= followed by the switch model number. In this case the switch we are using is the M9130A, so we entered: Model=M9130A Proceed to the Hardware tab for the next steps. 2.4 Hardware Tab 2 If switch is present: Enter the PXI VISA address Select the Add button Enter a Hardware Assets name and press Enter Under Resource Descriptor add the switch VISA address. Select the checkbox to left of asset name If switch is not present: No need ill in Resource Descriptor ield Proceed to the Software tab 1. Incorrect entry of Driver Setup will cause errors to occur in later steps. Be careful to enter model number correctly. 2. The VISA address can be found using Keysight ACE. In this case the M9130A address is PXI6::15::0::INSTR. Be sure to select the checkbox to the left of the Hardware Asset Name (multiple addresses may be present, be sure to enter and check the correct one).

After the driver is selected, various ields in this window will be populated with driver information as shown. Proceed to the Initial Settings tab. 2.6 Initial Settings 1 Change the Value* ield from the default to the actual module number. In this case the Model was changed to M9130A (the default value was M9128A). Press Save IVI Coniguration. The driver session has now been created and saved in the IVI coniguration store. Create a logical name. Proceed to creating a logical name. 1. Important: the edits will not be saved to the coniguration store until the Save IVI Coniguration button is pressed.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP TWO: Edit the IVI coniguration store and create a driver session (continued) 2.7 Logical Name 1 Create a logical name which will be used by the switch path editor to access the driver session. Right click on Logical Names. Left click on Create New (case-sensitive) to create a new session. Rename the session as desired. In this case the driver session is named MyGPSwitch. Select the Driver Session dropdown menu and select the driver session created in the previous section. Press Save IVI Coniguration. At the conclusion of these steps, an IVI driver session and logical name has been created and conigured. Once the Save IVI Coniguration button is selected, the coniguration is saved to the IVI coniguration store. In the next steps, the Switch Executive will use the information in the IVI coniguration store to create a coniguration for a Switch Executive virtual device. 1. Important: the edits will not be saved to the coniguration store until the Save IVI Coniguration button is pressed.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP THREE: Create and conigure a Switch Executive Virtual Device An NI Switch Executive virtual device is a representation made up of switch modules, channels, wires and other components making up the switch block. For the purpose of this application note it is essential to know that Keysight switches can be included into a virtual device after which control using NI Switch Executive is possible. For detailed information on virtual devices see the NI Switch Executive documentation. 3.1 From NI MAX 1 Select and expand Devices and Interfaces Right click on NI Switch Executive Virtual Devices. Left click on Create New to create a new Virtual Device session. Make the following changes to the window that appears: Change Virtual Device Name. In this case renamed to GPSwitch. Under Available Switches select driver session logical name. Use yellow arrow to move to Switches to Add side of the window. Select Next to proceed. NI Switch Executive will process the information in the IVI coniguration store and at completion will appear as shown. Select Finish. 1. After moving the switch driver session logical name to Switches to Add the window should appear as shown above.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP THREE: Create and conigure a Switch Executive Virtual Device (continued) 3.2 The window that appears will be used to create switch routes. 1 Using the Channel 1 and Channel 2 columns select adjacent nodes in the path. For example, the M9130A is a form C switch, so com1 is adjacent to no1. Select: com1 for Channel 1; and no1 for Channel 2 Select Create button The connection as shown in the far right ield should appear: com1 -> no1 3.3 Create Additional Paths 2 Repeat preceding step for all the paths of interest. To the right is shown several paths that were created for the M9130A switch. When completed select Save. 1. If connection does not appear, review the IVI driver coniguration setting in steps 2.2-2.6. Settings must be correct or connections will not be created. 2. Seven routes have been added to the RoutGroup0. The switch routes have now been created and can be tested.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP FOUR: Testing the Signal Routes It is good practice to verify the switch routes have been generated correctly and can be controlled as expected. This is best done with PXI hardware present and by using the NI Switch Executive Test Panel. 4.1 Test Panel Select the Test Panel utility located at the top of the Route editor window: Test Panel The test Panel window will appear. Choose a route and select the connect button to close the route: If the hardware is present you will hear the relay click. Repeat route connect for all routes desired. To open the connections select the disconnect-all button: If the relay is a large armature switch, listen for the relay to close. In some cases, the switches may be small and you may not be able to hear the switch closures use an Ω meter to verify switch closer. Inspect the Status box to verify no errors are generated.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note STEP FOUR: Testing the Signal Routes (continued) 4.2 Special considerations for multi-pole switches NI Switch Executive does not automatically execute a route disconnect. This is important to keep in mind when using NI Switch Executive with multi pole switches such as the M9157C. Remember to execute a route disconnect prior to the next route to connect. Select either disconnect selected route or disconnect all: or Failure to do this will result in NI Switch Executive generating an error. For multi-pole switches such as the M9157C remember to disconnect routes prior to selecting the next route.

Keysight Using PXI Modules, I/0 Libraries and IVI Switch Drivers with National Instruments Switch Executive - Application Note Conclusion Switch Executives can be very helpful when controlling a large number of switch paths.
