Before You Begin Comply with the VRX Virtual Appliance Host System Requirements [PN 200778-001] This Quick Start Guide only covers single-interface Server mode, which uses mgmt0 for data traffic. Download the virtual appliance ISO file to the KVM host disk: - For a 30-day free trial, go to the Silver Peak Marketplace. - If you ve purchased the product, then log in at the Silver Peak Support portal. Obtain a VRX Virtual Replication Accelerator activation license key If not using DHCP, then an IP address for the Silver Peak appliance. Launch Virtual Machine Manager from the desktop, and connect to the target KVM server. 1 Prepare the KVM server/host In this section, you ll create the following: One bridge network interface One virtual disk for the System a. From the menu bar, select Edit > Connection Details. The <hostname> Connection Details page appears. 2 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

b. Select the Network Interfaces tab. To begin creating a bridge interface for mgmt0, click in the lower left corner. The Configure network interface dialog box appears, showing Step 1 of 2. c. Make sure that the Interface Type is Bridge, and then click Forward. The Step 2 of 2 dialog box appears. PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3 3 of 17

Complete the fields as follows: clear Name: Start mode: Activate now: IP settings: Bridge settings: Choose interfaces to bridge: mgmt0 onboot [select it] [Manually configure > No configuration] STP off em2 [based on your host configuration, pick the physical adapter for mgmt0] e. Click Finish. If the following warning message appears, click Yes. The Network Interfaces page appears, with the newly added mgmt0 in the left pane. 4 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

Now you ll create one virtual disk for System. f. In the <hostname> Connection Details window, select the Storage tab and click LocalStore in the left navigation pane. NOTE: In this example, LocalStore is a user-created storage pool, used for convenience. You can use any storage pool that meets the host requirements specifications. g. Click New Volume. To add a 30-GB storage volume for the System, complete these fields as follows, multiplying the prescribed GB (Gigabyte) value by 1024 to convert it to MB (Megabytes): Name: Format: Max Capacity: Allocation: MySilverPeak-SYS raw 30720 [MB] 30720 [MB] This size (30 GB, or 30720 MB) is the appropriate value for all VRX appliances. A larger allocation does not improve performance, and the excess remains unused. i. Click Finish. The Storage tab displays the MySilverPeak-SYS.img volume. 6 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

Velocity Replication Accelerator / KVM Hypervisor / Server Mode [Single-Interface Deployment] 2 Create and configure the virtual machine This section includes the following tasks, in sequence: Creating the virtual machine Attaching the System volume (virtual disk) that you created earlier Modifying the existing NIC for mgmt0 a. Returning to the Virtual Machine Manager window, move the mouse over the tool bar to find and click the icon for Create a new virtual machine. The New VM dialog box appears, with the subheading, Step 1 of 5. b. In the Name field, with Local install media (ISO image or CDROM) selected, enter MySilverPeak, and click Forward. 8 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

c. In the Step 2 of 5 dialog box, select the following and then click Forward: Use ISO image (Browse to select the file you already downloaded from Silver Peak s website) OS type: Linux Version: Show all OS options > Fedora 14 d. In the Step 3 of 5 dialog box, do the following: For your VRX model, refer to the VRX Virtual Appliance Host System Requirements document [PN 200778-001] for the number of CPUs and amount of memory your virtual appliance must have. In this example, we ll use the values for the VRX-4. For the Memory (RAM) field, look for the number of Memory (Gigabytes) required. In this instance of the VRX-4, it s 7 GB. Multiply this by 1024 MB/GB for a total of 7168 MB. For the CPUs field, look for the number of Processor Cores required. In this instance of the VRX-4, it s 4. e. Click Forward. From the LocalStore storage pool, select MySilverPeak-SYS.img and click Choose Volume. When the Step 4 of 5 dialog box reappears, click Forward. 10 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

h. In the Step 5 of 5 dialog box, select Customize configuration before install, and click Finish. i. The MySilverPeak Virtual Machine window appears. We still have to configure a couple more parameters. Tasks include: modifying the existing System volume you created (in Step 2g of this document) modifying the existing NIC (associated with mgmt0) In the following section, you ll be preparing to map a virtual interface (also known as a NIC or network) to the appropriate physical adapter. For mgmt0, you ll modify the existing NIC for mgmt0. PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3 11 of 17

In the left navigation pane of the MySilverPeak Virtual Machine page, select the (only) NIC and specify the following: Source device: Device model: Host device em2 (Bridge mgmt0 ) virtio k. Click Apply. The Apply button dims. Now it s time to power on the virtual machine. l. In the menu bar, click Begin Installation. The machine powers up. 12 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

m. When the console displays the Confirm screen, asking, Install Silver Peak Appliance on KVM platform?, press Enter to accept Okay. n. When the console displays the Install Done screen with Reboot selected, press Enter on the keyboard. PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3 13 of 17

3 Establish connectivity to the virtual machine To access the VRX appliance s user interface, you ll need to discover the IP address for its mgmt0 interface and enter it into a browser. a. The next task is to determine the virtual appliance s IP address: If you re using DHCP, the virtual appliance IP address displays in Silver Peak s Console User Interface. If you re not using DHCP, then you must configure the static IP address and default gateway. In the virtual appliance console, press function key, F4, and complete the remaining steps. When prompted to choose the type of management interface, select Static (as opposed to DHCP). After selecting Apply, you can review the settings by selecting function key, F2. b. To verify connectivity, press function key, F1, and enter the following command sequence: [vx-appliance] > enable [vx-appliance] # show ip default-gateway [vx-appliance] # ping <default-gateway> [ENTER] [ENTER] [ENTER] To stop the pinging, enter CTRL-C. You are now ready to complete the Silver Peak virtual appliance initial configuration wizard. PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3 15 of 17

In a browser, enter the mgmt0 IP address you just discovered or configured. The Silver Peak Appliance Management Console login page appears. b. For both the User Name and Password, enter admin. The initial configuration wizard appears. c. Complete the remaining wizard screens. d. On the last wizard screen, click Apply. The Appliance Manager takes a few minutes to reboot and return to the login page. 16 of 17 PN 200790-001 Rev E» R7.3

5 Configure storage for redirection a. Configure storage for redirection. There are two ways to accomplish this: Configure a static route to direct replication traffic to the VRX appliance Change the default gateway for all replication ports to use the VRX appliance b.
