Door retainer (S&C 5801) Holds the enclosure door open while you view and use the faceplate. Switch Control Electronics Modules Universal Communications Mounting Plate Communications Equipment (optional) Grounded AC Outlet (5801 only) Figure 2. Switch Control with Faceplate Open, S&C 5801 Shown. Switch control electronics modules Modularized for easy troubleshooting and replacement. Universal Communications Mounting Plate A solid base on which the equipment for SCADA communications (radio, modem, etc.) is mounted (if applicable). Communications equipment (optional) S&C supports the 5800 Series controls with a variety of hardware options and software protocols, for 2-way communication between the switch control and a SCADA master station. Grounded ac outlet (S&C 5801) An easily-accessed power source for your portable computer. (This feature requires a connection to ac line power.) Control software Resides in the switch control and manages the moment-by-moment functioning of the installation. Can be easily updated (using the IntelliLINK software s Update utility). Version upgrades are handled through software uploads, and you will never need to replace computer chips. IntelliLINK software Lets you verify and change all setup and configuration parameters, monitor real-time operating data, perform troubleshooting, create reports, and export data for use in spreadsheets. Resides on your portable computer and runs in the Microsoft Windows environment. 1041-500 6

Switch Control Features All controls in the S&C 5800 series include the following features: Dependable quality Electronics manufactured in an ISO 9002-certified plant. Toughness and reliability Designed to withstand the difficult environmental and electrical conditions found in electric distribution applications. Rugged, well-proven core electronics design Microprocessor, memory, and all related components based on technology developed for S&C s full range of control products (with over 100,000 units in the field since 1985). Update this figure for each manual release. Data logging capabilities Useful for both stand-alone and communications-oriented applications. Flexible communication capabilities Has a LOCAL communication port (for communicating with your portable computer) and two SCADA ports (for remote communication applications). Deadband reporting values can be applied to Voltage, Current, Phase Angle, kvars, kw, and kva monitoring. When enabled, the deadband setpoint defines a variance threshold from a previously stored reference value. If the measured value deviates more than this amount from the reference value, the switch control reports the event and updates the reference value to equal the new measurement. Setpoint control of most operating parameters Automatic operation options, address information, and other operating parameters can be viewed and changed as needed. Non-volatile memory Programming, setpoints, and data stored in permanent, nonvolatile memory for maximum field functionality and reliability. Real-time clock Crystal-controlled clock provides accurate timestamping of real-time data. Electrical isolation designed for the application All power supplied to external devices and their interfaces (including switch motors, wetting voltage for external digital inputs, and external sensor conditioning circuitry), is isolated by opto-couplers, and can withstand a surge of 2500 volts RMS for one minute. Highly-efficient, computer-controlled power supply/battery charger system Provides 12, 24, or 36 Vdc (battery charging for 24 or 36 Vdc, depending on the switch in use), for the switch control, switch, and communications equipment. Fully temperature-compensated charging, accurate measurement of battery voltage, and response predictions (for heavy loads) yield maximum battery life and minimal required maintenance. Battery system Provides power for critical components even during complete ac power loss. Automatic line sectionalizing feature When combined with a source-side reclosing device, can assist in the speedy isolation of faults. This minimizes service loss for the maximum number of customers. Phase Loss Protection feature Minimizes single-phase damage to customer equipment when voltage is lost on only one or two phases. Automatic Reclose feature Automatic switch reclose after the resumption of steady three-phase voltage following a phase loss. Shots-to-Lockout feature Limits the number of reclose operations performed by the source-side protective device (recloser, breaker, etc.) when closing into a fault. Reliable overcurrent fault detection Includes a redundant electronic path for phase fault current, scaled specifically for fault detection. A ground fault current is measured with high accuracy as the analog vector sum of the 3 individually sensed phase currents. 7 1041-500

Switch control ac power from S&C sensors Most switch controls connected to S&C switches can receive power directly from S&C sensors, for circuits with voltages near the nominal rating of the sensors. This is especially useful where ac line power is unavailable. If both ac line and sensor power are available, the switch control uses ac line power. If the ac power fails, the control automatically switches to sensor power. 5800 controls without the Sensor Power option are powered from an external 120 or 240 Vac line. Harmonic smoothing for sensor-powered controls When sensor control power is employed on a feeder with harmonic content in excess of the IEEE 519 Guidelines, the Harmonic Smoothing algorithm mitigates excessive voltage and phase angle fluctuation for display and DNP reporting purposes. Additional 5801 Features Additional 5802/5803 Features Your S&C 5801 switch control also includes special features which customize it for use with overhead switches. These features include: Custom ac voltage and current-signal conditioning Specifically designed and tested for use with the type of sensors in use. Specialized enclosure wiring Switch interface connector and internal enclosure wiring matched to the control cable. Switch control shipped ready to install Control is modular and connectorized, and requires no discrete field wiring other than 120 Vac control power. Visual disconnect Supports the S&C D2 visual disconnect option (disconnect closed and latched indication), both in the IntelliLINK software and in the SCADA status points. When the visual disconnect is open, the switch cannot operate. The D2 option is a standard feature on R2 Operating Mechanisms, and an optional feature on R1 Mechanisms. Your S&C 5802/5803 switch control also includes special features which customize it for use with multi-switch installations. These features include: Custom ac voltage and current-signal conditioning Specifically designed and tested for use with up to 6 current and 6 voltage sensors, or 9 current and 3 voltage sensors. Specialized enclosure wiring Internal wiring matched to the pad-mounted switch operator and sensor cables. Switch control shipped ready for integration Requires only mounting in the low voltage compartment and connection of control/status, sensor, ac power, and communications wiring. Separate automatic control setpoints for switches 1 and 2 Lets you select independent setpoint values and automatic features enabled for each switch. 1041-500 8
