HP StorageWorks D2D Backup Systems and StoreOnce The combination that right-sizes your storage capacity. Solution brief AUtOMATEyour data protection. Regardless of size and industry, many of today s organisations struggle with exploding volumes of data, and the concurrent need to enlist copious amounts of storage without breaking the bank (or growing the IT staff roster). Adding too much storage can result in inflated capital expenses and higher energy and cooling costs; adding too little means you ll likely incur downtime and soon need to spend even more to keep your system running efficiently. Hospitals, biotech research firms, television and publishing companies, and government agencies need the capacity to process terabytes of data and the ability to cost-effectively store it for future use or compliance requirements. As a leading provider of technology and computing solutions, HP utilises more than 60 years of global leadership and expertise, as well as synergistic relationships with key partners, customers and leading research centres, to provide solutions designed to handle whatever tomorrow brings. Simplified data protection from HP D2D Backup Systems with StoreOnce Embedded software technology that s integrated into HP Disk-to-Disk (D2D) Backup Systems, HP StoreOnce provides the data deduplication that optimises long-term data storage. Without deduplication, data protection processes typically entail saving multiple instances of what is essentially the same file (with minute changes among the different versions), filling valuable storage space and inflating power and cooling costs. Copies of these versions are then transmitted offsite for disaster recovery purposes. By automatically finding and then eliminating redundant file information, HP StoreOnce deduplication typically permits the retention of 20-times more backup data on disk. Being able to retain more backup data on disk for longer periods of time reduces downtime and enables greater data accessibility for the rapid restoration of lost or corrupt files. Hands-free, unattended daily backup is especially important for remote or branch offices (ROBO) and other environments with limited IT resources. Designed on a standard, open architecture, HP StoreOnce enables portability of common deduplication software across different platforms, which simplifies the management process and prevents the need to re-inflate the data as it is moved across a data centre. In addition, HP StoreOnce offers comprehensive data protection support, providing Virtual Tape Library (VTL), Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Open Storage (OST) interfaces over ethernet and fibre channel () and supplying broad support for industry-standard backup applications. HP advantages Increased automation and reduced hardware costs Longer retention of backup data on disk Network-efficient replication Benefits Lower total cost of ownership. Reduce likelihood of error. Enables fast recovery of lost or corrupt files from multiple backup points. Reduces cost per gigabyte through more efficient disk-based storage utilisation. Transmits data via lower bandwidth lines to reduce costs. Reduces tape overhead required at remote sites for backup, media management and offsite vaulting.
Note: The following configurations are examples only. Your actual configuration will vary, depending on your requirements. Consult with your HP representative for an official recommendation that meets your unique needs. HP end-to-end workflow In essence, HP StoreOnce deduplication means that typically 20-times more backup data can be retained on disk (regardless of the network or system it comes from) as HP D2D Backup Systems support both fibre channel and Internet Small Computer System Interface (iscsi) with the flexibility of both NAS and VTL targets. An HP D2D Backup System provides a single deduplication solution that s suited for your entire environment, in which multiple, parallel backup data streams are consolidated on a single device, dramatically reducing the number of backup appliances you need to manage. With HP D2D Backup Systems, you can keep more data on hand with low-bandwidth, network-efficient replication for automated, cost-effective disaster recovery and ROBO deployment from anywhere within your data centre. HP D2D Backup Systems with HP StoreOnce deduplication solution HP D2D Backup Systems with HP StoreOnce deduplication offer disk-based data protection for data centres and remote offices. When you automate and consolidate the backup of multiple servers onto a single, rack-mountable disk device, you improve reliability while reducing the potential for errors caused by media handling. In addition, HP StoreOnce deduplication software enables the longer-term data retention on disk and the network efficient replication that results in a cost-effective way to back up data offsite. HP StoreOnce software delivers the only technology that deduplicates data only one time. In addition, deduplication enables replication with lower bandwidth requirements, thereby making it easier to consolidate backup information from multiple remote locations. And HP StoreOnce s automated deduplication saves time by permitting data recovery via disk instead of an operatorintensive tape process, and saves floor space in already-crowded data centres. HP StoreOnce: Runs as an application/service within a standard Linux operating system. Resides on a standard file system. Uses a standard RAID stack for data storage. What this means is that over time HP StoreOnce can be easily integrated with other HP components, including HP s scale-out file system and HP Data Protector backup software. HP also gains the ability to leverage StoreOnce as part of a common storage software stack for HP Converged Infrastructure. Where HP D2D Backup Systems Excel Although D2D is not a replacement for physical tape, it offers some unique selling features: Faster single file restores Easy virtualisation of automated tape devices Intuitive web-based browser interface for both local and remote monitoring Deduplication enabled replication for automated and costeffective disaster recovery and ROBO deployments 3

We are very pleased with the HP StorageWorks D2D2500 Backup System solution. It works quietly in the background, giving us peace of mind that our staff s and students data is secure. It has been a large but important investment that covers our needs now and into the future. Roger Wylde, Network Manager, Droitwich Spa High School The HP D2D4000 Backup System works flawlessly for us. We had no problems setting it up, the system recognised it right away, and the software configuration was straightforward. Mike Hall, UNIX Systems Administrator, Information Technology Center, Montana State University Solution in action England s Droitwich Spa High School had servers that were running out of disk space and backing up data directly to tape was costly and inefficient. The school needed a solution that would improve backup speeds and reliability, meet rapidly growing storage needs and reduce costs. To better position themselves for future expansion, Droitwich chose the HP StorageWorks D2D2500 Backup System and HP ProLiant DL380 G5 servers, an affordable and flexible combination. The HP solution gave Droitwich Spa High School a fast, reliable backup solution and scalable storage that s prepared for whatever the future holds. The school realised lower costs, increased data security and improved network performance. Because the overnight backup window no longer runs into the following morning, the faster backup time frees up network bandwidth for use by students and staff. Droitwich gained a cumulative, projected threeyear net benefit of approximately 62,000 by avoiding unnecessary hardware-related costs and by reducing tape costs. Ultimately, the project includes a 113 percent return on investment, and will pay for itself in 17 months. Resources For more information about storage, visit www.hp.com/go/storage.
