02. Introduction to Photobook It s getting more and more common nowadays and it serves for many purposes such as for artwork showcase, memory or for storytelling. To create Photobook in Indesign requires several planning instead of jump straight away onto the computer and play around with page layout software Planning includes Photobook Concept o Purpose: What the photobook for o Style: What impression you want the viewers to feel o Dimension: The size of the photobook, normally A4 size, but square is not uncommon o Orientation: it can be portrait or landscape Photobook sections may include o Cover: The gate to enter your photobook world o Table of Content: To provide overview and navigation for your photobook o Main content: 1 big chapter that contains introduction and content pages or Couple of sections to organise different topics (Such as different type of artwork, different visited countries, and many more) Photobook elements may include but not limited to o Page layout: The way we organise the photo and information Photo symbol Heading symbol Body copy symbol o Page background: To provide more interesting scene without distracting the main content Solid colour Gradient colour Low opacity image o Photo: The main contents of photobook and it may vary in size depending on how the layout is created o Heading: Short text as description of the page or caption of the photo o Body copy: Long information that may include description of the photo, poem, etc 5

Heading Text in Indesign o Paragraph text: Text with rectangular frame as its boundary o Shape text: Text with custom shape as its boundary o Text on path: Text that is running on custom path or shape o Outline text: Text that has been converted into an object that can serve as frame or design element Character palette o Font family: The typeface option for the text At Character Palette, select Font Family drop down menu o Font style: Using its bold, italic or bold and italic version of the selected typeface At Character Palette, select Font Style drop down menu o Font size: The size of the text At Character Palette, select Font Size drop down menu or input desired number into font size input text o Leading: Vertical distance of the text from one line to the next line (baseline) At Character Palette, select Leading drop down menu or input desired number into leading input text. 08. Body copy Threading text o Thread to new paragraph text: When working with long text, sometimes the text frame that we create is not enough to accommodate the length of the content. The overflowing text is indicated by Red PLUS sign at the right bottom corner of the text frame. We can thread / link the text frame by creating new paragraph text CLICK Red Plus sign at the right corner of the text frame, then CLICK + DRAG to create new text frame for the overflowing text o Thread to existing shape: Overflowing text can be threaded into existing shape Create new shape / frame, CLICK Red Plus sign at the right corner of the text frame, then CLICK anywhere in the within the aimed shape / frame Paragraph text o Paragraph Alignment: To left align, centre align, right align or justified align the paragraph At Paragraph Palette, select 1 (one) of the options from the first row icons o Paragraph indention: To indent the whole paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for the paragraph indention o First line indention: To indent first line of the paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for the first line paragraph indention o Space before & after paragraph: To set the space before or after a paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for space before and / or after the paragraph o Drop Cap: To set the Drop Cap for a paragraph At Paragraph Palette, set the number for how big is the Drop Cap size (according to the number of the line from the paragraph) and how many character(s) is included in the Drop Cap option Paragraph style o Create paragraph style: Modified paragraph can be saved as paragraph styles to be used for future use. Interactivity Note Button: To convert an object into a button to be used as interactive tool o Create an object and convert it into button (at Menu Bar, Object > Interactive > Convert to button) o Activate Button Palette if it s not previously shown, then select the Event to tell Indesign on what event it will trigger the button. And then, add Action for specific response to be given Page Transition: To add page transition when we move from one page to another o Select 1 (one) of the actual document that you want the Page transition to be applied onto, then display Page Transition Palette (At Menu Bar, Window > Interactive > Page Transitions). Select the Page Transition type from the drop down menu. The small icon at the right bottom corner is used if the current page transitions will be used for all of the pages Hyperlink: To create text or object as hyperlink to open a webpage o Select object or text that will be used as hyperlink. Activate Hyperlink Palette (At Menu Bar, Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks). Type the web address into URL Input Text. By default, the object or text will have black outline around it, but it can be eliminate easily by CLICK-ing recently created Hyperlink then select Invisible or Appearance > Type drop down menu 23

12. Export Export as PDF (for Printing): Exporting as PDF for printing will be required to maintain the image quality as high as possible. Resample feature is limited to acceptable resolution of the image for printing o At Menu Bar, File > Adobe PDF Preset s> High Quality or File > Adobe PDF Preset s> Press Quality. It will be useful to include printing mark for press Export as Interactive PDF: Exporting as PDF for email / web with interactivity purpose will be required to create the file as small as possible. o At Menu Bar, File> Adobe PDF Presets> Smallest File Size. In the Include section, activate the relevant checkbox such as Hyperlinks or Interactive Elements Export as SWF: Export as SWF supports Turn Page transition as well as automatically to create HTML page. o At menu Bar, File > Export and then choose SWF from t he Save As Type drop down menu, choose SWF Note 25
