Introduction BookFlix is an online resource of Scholastic Big Day for PreK that is accessible through both the Big Day Teacher Space and Family Space websites. Through BookFlix, children may view paired video storybooks and nonfiction ebooks. The eight themes of BookFlix correspond to the themes of Scholastic Big Day for PreK, and the titles in each theme have been chosen to complement the theme. BookFlix also includes a series of games to help children master the concepts they learn through reading. Accessing the BookFlix Home Page From Teacher Space Click the Go button on the BookFlix icon at the top right of the Teacher Space Home Screen to open the BookFlix Home Page in a separate browser window. BookFlix User s Guide Updated 04.19.10 BookFlix Home Page 5
From Family Space Click the Go button from the BookFlix icon in the center of the Family Space Home Page to open the featured pair for the theme, or click Browse All from the icon to open the BookFlix Home Page. BookFlix User s Guide Updated 04.19.10 BookFlix Home Page 6
Browsing the Home Page Click the Go button on the Featured Pair icon to jump to the Reading Pair Screen (page 10) for those titles. Click any of the Theme Buttons to open the Title Browse Screen (page 9) and view the four titles that make up a theme. BookFlix User s Guide Updated 04.19.10 BookFlix Home Page 7
To see a list of every book in the program, click Browse All in the lower right corner of the screen. BookFlix is available in both English and Spanish. To choose the language BookFlix displays in, click the English or Español buttons at the top of the Home Page. Once you select a language, the page reloads with the language selected. To switch languages, return to the Home Page and make a new selection. In the upper right corner of the BookFlix Home Page are three navigation links: Family: Click to open the Family Screen, which provides general information and steps for using BookFlix in the classroom and at home. The Family Screen also has a Title Browse link, which opens the list of every book in the program. Help: Click for help using BookFlix. The Title Browse Screen The Title Browse Screen displays the selected theme s two Reading Pairs. Each pair is comprised of a video storybook and a nonfiction ebook. To open the Reading Pair Screen for the paired title, click Go or the book cover of the video storybook or nonfiction ebook. To view the Title Browse Screen for other Big Day Themes, click the number tag on the right side of the screen to open that theme. The Reading Pair Screen The Reading Pair Screen is the home screen for the video storybook and nonfiction ebook that make up the Reading Pair. To launch the video storybook, click Go under the video storybook s cover. To launch the nonfiction ebook, click Go under the ebook s cover. To open the Puzzlers! Screen (page 13), click Puzzlers! To view a profile of the selection s author (page 17), click Meet the Author. To view links to educational resources (page 18), click Explore the Web. To return to the Theme s Title Browse Screen, click the More link with the Theme s name. To return to the Reading Pair Screen at any point, click the Start link. Watching the Video Storybook Click Go under the video storybook s cover to launch the video storybook. The video will launch automatically. By default, the video is read aloud, with the onscreen text highlighted as it is read. To turn this feature off, click the Read Along button. Clicking the button changes the icon from On to Off, and restarts the video. To pause the video, click the Pause/Play button. Click the button again to resume the video. To start the video again, click the Restart button next to the Pause/Play button. To advance the video forward or backward, use the slider under the screen. Click the arrow to move it to the portion of the video you wish to view, or click the slider bar to advance the arrow to the desired point. Use the volume control slider to increase or decrease the volume. Click the Mute button to turn off the volume. Click the Full Screen button to open the video in a separate browser window. Close this window to return to the BookFlix screen. Entering and exiting Full Screen mode does not pause the video. BookFlix User s Guide Updated 04.19.10 The Reading Pair Screen 11
Reading the Nonfiction ebook Click Go under the nonfiction ebook s cover to launch the ebook. Click Open to open the ebook to the first two pages. By default, the Read Along feature is turned off. To turn this feature on, click the Read Along button. The text on the page is read aloud and the corresponding text is highlighted. Clicking the button again changes the icon from On to Off without losing the reader s place in the ebook. Vocabulary words are highlighted in yellow. Place the cursor on the highlighted vocabulary word to view a definition. Click the sound icon to hear the definition read aloud. The definition is read regardless of whether the Read Aloud function is turned on or off. Click Back to go back to the previous set of pages. Click Turn Page to advance to the next set of pages. Use the slider to control the volume. Move the slider to the right to increase the volume or to the left to decrease the volume. BookFlix User s Guide Updated 04.19.10 The Reading Pair Screen 12
Puzzlers! Screen Click the Puzzlers! link to open the Puzzlers! Screen with links to educational games that ask comprehension questions related to the Reading Pair. Click the Go button for any activity to access that game, or click the name of the game on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. The current activity is colored green. Word Match Word Match allows children to test their vocabulary by matching words with their definitions. To play the game, read the clue and click the word that correctly matches the clue. If the correct word is clicked, a portion of the underlying picture is revealed. When all the words are correctly clicked, the picture is shown and children see an animation congratulating them on a great job. Children may read the instructions or clues themselves, or they may hear them read to them by clicking the sound icons. When finished, children may click the Play Again button or click the links to one of the other two Puzzlers! games in the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. Real or Make Believe? Real or Make Believe? challenges children with questions based on the events in the Featured Pair selections. Read the clue and click Real if the statement is something that can happen in real life or Make Believe if the statement is fictional. When children answer a question correctly, they see a Nice Work! message; if they answer incorrectly, they see a Try Again message. When children answer all three questions correctly, they see an animation congratulating them on a great job. Children may read the instructions or clues themselves, or they may hear them read to them by clicking the sound icons. When finished, children may click the Play Again button or click the links to one of the other two Puzzlers! games in the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. Which Came First? Which Came First? tests children s reading comprehension by asking them to recall the chronological order of the video storybook. Children see three images from the video storybook and drag each one to the First, Next, or Last box to place them in the correct order. If they drag the first image to the correct box, the image gets locked in to the box; if they drag that image to the incorrect box, it flies back to its original location. They must correctly place the first image in its box to go on to the second image, and so on. Children may read the instructions or clues themselves, or they may hear them read to them by clicking the sound icons. When children place all three images correctly, they see an animation congratulating them on a great job. When finished, children may click the Play Again button or click the links to one of the other two Puzzlers! games in the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. Meet the Author Click the Meet the Author link to go to the Meet the Author Screen, which includes a biography and photograph of the author of the video storybook. Explore the Web Click the Explore the Web link to go to the Explore the Web Screen, which contains links to further Theme-related activities.
