You need to set up your GPS to store data while surveying and you should synchronize the clocks in your GPS and your magnetometer to use this feature. You will also need to download GPSBabel software, which is available from http://www.gpsbabel.org/. The procedure below will lead you to creating a GPS located magnetometer data file with line numbers. 1. Open the magnetic data `BIN file or STN file in MagMap2000. (This may have been either through dumping the data from your mag or opening the file after you have previously saved it.) 2. Export a Surfer `DAT file of the magnetic readings. (Make sure that you are exporting the following parameters: `X, `Y, `SENSOR1, `TIME, `DATE, and LINE.) Remember to keep the name of this file handy. Click `Export Now. 3. Under MagMap2000 s File menu, run GPS data download wizard. (GPSBabel must be installed to do this.) Click `Next on GPS Data Download Wizard page to display the Specify GPS device or GPX file Page. 4. Enter the correct Garmin `GPX file corresponding to the mag file that you are using. 5. Check ( ) Data time zone differs from PC zone, and select the UTC offset from the drop down list. Click Next to display the Save GPS Positions Page. 6. Select Use local GPS time from the Use time: drop down list. It is important to verify that File start time and File stop time agree with the time stamps in the recorded magnetometer data set. If these times do not agree, either the Use time: choice is incorrect or the UTC offset is not correct. 7. Check ( ) Load into MagMap as positions. Click Next to display the Select time tagged data Page. 8. Check ( ) Load time-tagged data. Using MagMap 2000 to Merge GPX Fixes and Geometrics Magnetometer Data.docx Page 2
9. Click on the button to select the Data file (SURFER format): (using the Surfer file that you created at Step 2.). Click Finish. 10. On Data File definition page, select the correct Time and Date information. 11. Optional check ( ) Don t use lines if you intend to process the data as if it were collected on a single line. 12. Click Add data channel, and choose the magnetic reading and click OK. Using MagMap 2000 to Merge GPX Fixes and Geometrics Magnetometer Data.docx Page 3
13. There will now be three separate panels appearing: Select the panel which shows the map of the positions of the readings. Right-click on the map and choose Export. 14. Un-check ( ) Export data separately. (This will merge the mag and GPS data into a single file.) Using MagMap 2000 to Merge GPX Fixes and Geometrics Magnetometer Data.docx Page 4
15. Specify a Surfer file name (ie a DAT file). Click Export Now 16. A Surfer file now exists, containing the GPS coordinates and the magnetic readings. Open this DAT file in any text editor, to confirm. Using MagMap 2000 to Merge GPX Fixes and Geometrics Magnetometer Data.docx Page 5
