DANGER When working on or around the system, observe the following precautions: Electrical voltage and current from power, telephone, and communication cables are hazardous. To avoid a shock hazard: v Connect power to this unit only with the IBM provided power cord. Do not use the IBM provided power cord for any other product. v Do not open or service any power supply assembly. v Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm. v The product might be equipped with multiple power cords. To remove all hazardous voltages, disconnect all power cords. v Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical outlet. Ensure that the outlet supplies proper voltage and phase rotation according to the system rating plate. v Connect any equipment that will be attached to this product to properly wired outlets. v When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables. v Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or structural damage. v Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems, networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures. v Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following procedures when installing, moving, or opening covers on this product or attached devices. To Disconnect: 1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise). 2. Remove the power cords from the outlets. 3. Remove the signal cables from the connectors. 4. Remove all cables from the devices. To Connect: 1. Turn off everything (unless instructed otherwise). 2. Attach all cables to the devices. 3. Attach the signal cables to the connectors. 4. Observe the following precautions when working on or around your IT rack system: v Heavy equipment personal injury or equipment damage might result if mishandled. v Always lower the leveling pads on the rack cabinet. v Always install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet. v To avoid hazardous conditions due to uneven mechanical loading, always install the heaviest devices in the bottom of the rack cabinet. Always install servers and optional devices starting from the bottom of the rack cabinet. v Rack-mounted devices are not to be used as shelves or work spaces. Do not place objects on top of rack-mounted devices. v Each rack cabinet might have more than one power cord. Be sure to disconnect all power cords in the rack cabinet when directed to disconnect power during servicing. v Connect all devices installed in a rack cabinet to power devices installed in the same rack cabinet. Do not plug a power cord from a device installed in one rack cabinet into a power device installed in a different rack cabinet. v An electrical outlet that is not correctly wired could place hazardous voltage on the metal parts of the system or the devices that attach to the system. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the outlet is correctly wired and grounded to prevent an electrical shock. CAUTION v Do not install a unit in a rack where the internal rack ambient temperatures will exceed the manufacturer's recommended ambient temperature for all your rack-mounted devices. v Do not install a unit in a rack where the air flow is compromised. Ensure that air flow is not blocked or reduced on any side, front, or back of a unit used for air flow through the unit. v Consideration should be given to the connection of the equipment to the supply circuit so that overloading of the circuits does not compromise the supply wiring or overcurrent protection. To provide the correct power connection to a rack, refer to the rating labels located on the equipment in the rack to determine the total power requirement of the supply circuit. v (For sliding drawers.) Do not pull out or install any drawer or feature if the rack stabilizer brackets are not attached to the rack. Do not pull out more than one drawer at a time. The rack might become unstable if you pull out more than one drawer at a time. v (For fixed drawers.) This drawer is a fixed drawer and must not be moved for servicing unless specified by the manufacturer. Attempting to move the drawer partially or completely out of the rack might cause the rack to become unstable or cause the drawer to fall out of the rack. (R001) Safety notices vii

CAUTION: Removing components from the upper positions in the rack cabinet improves rack stability during relocation. Follow these general guidelines whenever you relocate a populated rack cabinet within a room or building: v Reduce the weight of the rack cabinet by removing equipment starting at the top of the rack cabinet. When possible, restore the rack cabinet to the configuration of the rack cabinet as you received it. If this configuration is not known, you must observe the following precautions: Remove all devices in the 32U position and above. Ensure that the heaviest devices are installed in the bottom of the rack cabinet. Ensure that there are no empty U-levels between devices installed in the rack cabinet below the 32U level. v If the rack cabinet you are relocating is part of a suite of rack cabinets, detach the rack cabinet from the suite. v Inspect the route that you plan to take to eliminate potential hazards. v Verify that the route that you choose can support the weight of the loaded rack cabinet. Refer to the documentation that comes with your rack cabinet for the weight of a loaded rack cabinet. v Verify that all door openings are at least 760 x 230 mm (30 x 80 in.). v Ensure that all devices, shelves, drawers, doors, and cables are secure. v Ensure that the four leveling pads are raised to their highest position. v Ensure that there is no stabilizer bracket installed on the rack cabinet during movement. v Do not use a ramp inclined at more than 10 degrees. v When the rack cabinet is in the new location, complete the following steps: Lower the four leveling pads. Install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet. If you removed any devices from the rack cabinet, repopulate the rack cabinet from the lowest position to the highest position. v If a long-distance relocation is required, restore the rack cabinet to the configuration of the rack cabinet as you received it. Pack the rack cabinet in the original packaging material, or equivalent. Also lower the leveling pads to raise the casters off of the pallet and bolt the rack cabinet to the pallet. (L003) or All lasers are certified in the U.S. to conform to the requirements of DHHS 21 CFR Subchapter J for class 1 laser products. Outside the U.S., they are certified to be in compliance with IEC 60825 as a class 1 laser product. Consult the label on each part for laser certification numbers and approval information. CAUTION: This product might contain one or more of the following devices: CD-ROM drive, DVD-ROM drive, DVD-RAM drive, or laser module, which are Class 1 laser products. Note the following information: v Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser product could result in exposure to hazardous laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device. v Use of the controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein might result in hazardous radiation exposure. CAUTION: Data processing environments can contain equipment transmitting on system links with laser modules that operate at greater than Class 1 power levels. For this reason, never look into the end of an optical fiber cable or open receptacle. (C027) CAUTION: This product contains a Class 1M laser. Do not view directly with optical instruments. (C028) CAUTION: Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following information: laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid direct exposure to the beam. (C030) CAUTION: The battery contains lithium. To avoid possible explosion, do not burn or charge the battery. Do Not: v Throw or immerse into water v Heat to more than 100 C (212 F) v Repair or disassemble Exchange only with the IBM-approved part. Recycle or discard the battery as instructed by local regulations. In the United States, IBM has a process for the collection of this battery. For information, call 1-800-426-4333. Have the IBM part number for the battery unit available when you call. (C003) Power and cabling information for NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) GR-1089-CORE The following comments apply to the IBM servers that have been designated as conforming to NEBS (Network Equipment-Building System) GR-1089-CORE: The equipment is suitable for installation in the following: v Network telecommunications facilities v Locations where the NEC (National Electrical Code) applies The intrabuilding ports of this equipment are suitable for connection to intrabuilding or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intrabuilding ports of this equipment must not be metallically connected to the interfaces that connect to the OSP (outside plant) or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use as intrabuilding interfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of primary protectors is not sufficient protection to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring. Note: All Ethernet cables must be shielded and grounded at both ends. The ac-powered system does not require the use of an external surge protection device (SPD). The dc-powered system employs an isolated DC return (DC-I) design. Installing the IBM FlashSystem 820 Learn about initial setup and configuration of your IBM FlashSystem. Unpacking the system Your system is supplied with a packing list. Ensure that you received all of the components listed. 1. Examine the external chassis for any damage that might have occurred during shipping. 2. Inspect the interface plate for any screws that might have loosened during shipping. 3. Inspect the front panel display for damage. 4. Report any meaningful damage. Copyright IBM Corp. 2013, 2014 1

Installing the system in a rack Learn how to install the system in a rack. (R001) Determining the location This procedure assumes that you have installed the rack, and now you must install the system into the rack. 2 IBM FlashSystem: Installing the IBM FlashSystem 820

About this task To begin the installation, complete the following tasks: Procedure 1. Read the Rack safety notices. This system is one Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) unit high. An EIA unit is 44.45 mm (1.75 in.) in height. The rack contains three mounting holes for each EIA unit of height. This system unit therefore is 44.45 mm (1.5 in.) high and covers three mounting holes in the rack. 2. If necessary, remove the front and rear rack doors. 3. Mark the location where the rails will be installed. Marking the location You might need to mark the installation location. About this task To mark the installation location, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. Face the front of the rack and work from the right side. Mark the middle hole of the EIA unit that you are using for this system unit. Note: Use tape or a marker to mark the locations on the rack. You must identify the marked hole from both the front and back of the rack. 2. Mark the location next to the middle hole of the EIA unit on the left side of the rack. 3. Go to the back of the rack. On the right side, find the EIA unit that corresponds to the EIA unit marked on the front of the rack. 4. Mark the middle hole of the EIA unit. 5. Mark the corresponding holes on the left side of the rack. 6. Continue to the next section. Attaching the inner glides to the system Using the screws that are provided in the rack kit, attach the inner glides to the sides of the system. See the instructions included with the rack kit for details. Attaching the mounting rails to the rack and installing the system onto the rails Learn about attaching mounting rails to the rack and installing the system onto the rails. About this task Note: To avoid rail failure and potential danger to yourself and to the unit, ensure that you have the correct rails and fittings for your rack. If your rack has square support flange holes or screw-thread support flange holes, ensure that the rails and fittings match the support flange holes that are used on your rack. Do not install mismatched hardware by using washers or spacers. If you do not have the correct rails and fittings for your rack, contact your IBM reseller. Procedure 1. You might need to attach the mounting rails to the rack. See the instructions included with the rack kit for details about attaching the mounting rails. Installing the IBM FlashSystem 820 3

2. Slide the system into the rack until it snaps into place. Cabling the system Learn about the tasks to cable the system. Connect the Fibre Channel or InfiniBand ports Connect the Fibre Channel (FC) or InfiniBand (IB) ports on the storage system to your server or to a switch. Figure 1. Fibre Channel or InfiniBand port locations v A FC controller has two FC ports: A and B, on the left and right respectively. The FC ports are capable of connecting to Point-to-Point (N-Port), Arbitrated Loop (NL-port), or Switched Fabric (F-Port) topologies at 2-Gb, 4-Gb, or 8-Gb speeds. v An IB controller card has two x4 IB ports: A and B, on the top and bottom respectively. The IB ports are capable of connecting to Quad Data Rate (QDR), Double Data Rate (DDR) or Single Data Rate (SDR) HCAs using the SCSI RDMA Protocol (SRP). Connecting the system to a management network Your system includes two Gigabit Ethernet management controller port (MCP) connections for remote management over a network. Figure 2. Ethernet management port locations Connect both Ethernet MCPs to the network. Do not connect only one MCP. Attention: There are known risks to using the FlashSystem if you only connect and configure one MCP: v If both MCPs are not connected and configured, an MCP failover could result in loss of system access through Telnet, SSH or the web management GUI. Front panel access may not be available. If this loss of access occurs, you must reboot to restore management access to the enclosure. v System logs and other management data are sent using the MCPs. Connecting power to the system A fully configured IBM FlashSystem 720 requires approximately 400 watts of power. Using the ac power cords that are provided, connect each power supply to a power source. As a best practice, connect each of the power cords to separate circuits. Figure 3. Power supplies When ac power is connected, the storage system powers up and the front panel display shows the power-on sequence. When the system is fully ready, the front panel displays Status: OK and the system performance statistics, including the system bandwidth and total input/output operations per second. Attach the power cords to the outlets. 5. Turn on the devices. (D005) Front panel display overview The front panel display provides a quick and easy way to view the status of the storage system. Figure 4. Front panel display and selection buttons The following buttons are located to the left of the display and are used to make selections: (M)enu This Menu button has two functions. button starts the Main Menu. This button is also used as an escape function. After the menu system is open, pressing this button returns to the prior pane. To scan through the first level of options, press the Menu key. (S)elect When a menu item is displayed, pressing this button will either run that menu option or proceed to the next level in the menu. This button scrolls up through the menu. It is also used to cancel certain commands as indicated on the display. If the menu is not selected, this button is disabled. This button scrolls down through the menu. It is also used to confirm certain commands as indicated on the display. If the menu is not selected, this button is disabled. Configuring the management controller ports using the front panel display The storage system supports system monitoring and configuration through the installed Ethernet management controller ports (MCPs). Before you begin Attention: There are known risks to using the FlashSystem if you only connect and configure one of the two MCPs: v If both MCPs are not connected and configured, an MCP failover could result in loss of system access through Telnet, SSH or the web management GUI. Front panel access may not be available. If this loss of access occurs, you must reboot to restore management access to the enclosure. v System logs and other management data are sent using the MCPs. If both MCPs are not connected and configured, and an MCP failover occurs, these logs will not be available to assist in troubleshooting. You must provide both MCPs with an IP address, a subnet mask, and a gateway address. There are three possible IP address settings: Static IP, DHCP, or No Ethernet. The default factory setting is DHCP. For any questions that you have regarding IP assignment values, consult your network administrator. About this task To set up the network settings for the MCPs by using the front panel, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. Use the arrow buttons to cycle through the top-level menu options until the display shows Net Config. 2. Use the Select button to choose this option and continue with the configuration. Select the management controller you would like to configure. Results You can now use the arrow buttons to scroll through the following menu options: Show Current Displays the current IP configuration, host name, IP Config address, subnet mask, gateway address (if applicable), and hardware MAC address for the management controller port. Eth0 Config Configures the Eth0 Ethernet MCP. Eth1 Config Configures the Eth1 Ethernet MCP. Installing the IBM FlashSystem 820 7

Restart Net Shuts down and restarts the Ethernet ports by using the current IP assignment configuration. Exit menu Exits the network menu. To continue setting up the Ethernet configuration for the MCP, select Eth0 Config or Eth1 Config depending on which MCP you are configuring, and then use the arrow buttons to cycle through the following IP configuration options: Static DHCP None Exit Enables static IP addresses Sets the IP configuration to DHCP Disables Ethernet Returns to the Main Menu without changes Consult your network administrator for the correct IP assignment type. Use the Select button to select the wanted method of IP assignment. If you choose the Eth0 Config, Eth1 Config, DHCP or None option, you must confirm the selection with the button. Configuring a static IP address for the management controller ports If you configure the Ethernet management control ports (MCPs) with a static IP address, you must provide the IP address, subnet mask, and possibly a gateway address. About this task To configure the address for each MCP, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. After you choose the Static IP option, you are prompted to enter an address. Use the and buttons to move the cursor. Press Select to cycle through the numbers 0 through 9. You can cancel your current changes at anytime by pressing the Menu button and following the dialog. 2. After you finish entering the IP address, scroll the cursor off the end of the address. This action brings up the Subnet Mask screen. 3. Using the same procedure as entering the IP address, enter the subnet mask. 4. The final value that you must enter is the Ethernet gateway. If the system is on a private network and this value is not needed, enter 0.0.0.0 on the next screen and then press any key to dismiss this message. Otherwise, enter the gateway IP address. 5. After you enter all the necessary values, you can review them, apply, edit, or cancel your changes through the Review Configuration pane. 6. To apply your changes, select the Apply new settings option. The changes are then applied and the network is automatically restarted. The final pane displays the assigned IP address. 7. After configuring the first MCP with a static IP address, use the front panel to select Eth1 Config for the second MCP, select Static, and then repeat steps 1 through 6 to configure the second MCP. Results Note: Because you established a static IP address rather than using DHCP, there is no automatic discovery of the network DNS server. To enter your network's DNS server information, you can use the web management interface. Configuring DHCP for the management controller ports Your storage system is pre-configured to use DHCP as its IP address method. To configure your DHCP server, you must know the hardware MAC address of the storage system. About this task To obtain the MAC address and to configure your system to use DHCP, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. From the mc-1 Config or mc-2 Config submenu, select the Show Current option. This option displays the information for the selected MCP. 2. Use the button to scroll to the section that displays the information for the Ethernet device. The MAC address is shown at the bottom and is displayed as six octets, such as a2:78:90:f7:01:88. Use this value to configure your DHCP server. 3. On the front panel display, choose Eth0 Config for MCP 1, or Eth1 Config for MCP 2, and select DHCP. 4. On the next pane, use the to confirm the setting. The system restarts automatically. The final screen displays the IP address that is assigned by the DHCP server. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to configure the second MCP, using the mc-2 Config submenu and Eth1 Config. Results If the network fails to start, check the Ethernet connection and contact your system administrator. If the IP configuration was successfully saved, select the Restart Net option from the management controller menu instead of reselecting the same IP configuration. Connecting to the web management interface Learn about the tasks you need to perform to connect to the web management interface. Acquiring the system IP address To use the web interface, you must connect to it over your network. About this task To acquire the IP address of the storage system, complete the following steps by using the front panel display: Procedure 1. Press the Menu button to display the Main Menu pane. Use the arrow buttons to find the System Info option, and then press Select. 2. Use the button to scroll until you see the Eth0 P line and the lines below it. 3. Take note of the IP address. Procedure 1. Using a web browser that can run Java, enter the system IP address as http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. The System Login pane is shown. The storage system is initially configured with a default admin user defined as User: admin and Password: password. 2. Log in to the system. The Web Interface Opening pane is shown. 3. To work with the web interface, you can expand or select the storage system icon in the system tree. Configuring the controllers Learn to use the web interface to configure the controllers. Procedure 1. In the web interface system tree, click the Interfaces node to view the Interfaces Overview pane. A table of all Fibre Channel and InfiniBand controller ports is shown. 2. Select the controller port, and click Configure on the overview pane toolbar. The Controller Channel Configuration pane is shown. 3. Select the topology and link speed appropriate for your network, and assign a loop ID. 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each controller port in the system. To create a logical unit, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. In the web interface system tree, right-click the Logical Units tree node and select Create. A wizard opens to guide you through the logical unit creation process. 2. After you read the wizard overview, click Next to set the logical unit parameters. 3. After you set the appropriate values, click Next. A final pane confirms the values. 4. After you click Finish, the logical unit is created. Procedure 1. To make logical units accessible to connected servers, link the logical unit to the storage system Fibre Channel port or the InfiniBand port. In the web interface system tree, click the Logical Unit node. 2. Click Access on the Logical Unit Overview pane to start the Access Policy wizard. 3. In the Modify Access Policies pane, select the policy node that you want from the Available tree, and then click the >> button to move the policy to the Assigned tree. 4. When you finish making policy changes, click Next to continue to the modifications review page. 5. Click the Confirm check box and click Finish to exit the wizard and to commit the policy changes. Setting the system date and time Learn how to set the date and time on your storage system. About this task If you want set the date and time, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. From the web interface, select the Management node in the system tree. 2. Select the Date/Time node. This action displays the current date and time and the length of time that the system has been running. 3. If the date and time are incorrect, set them manually. Either use the right mouse button to click the Date/Time node and select Date/time configuration, or use the left mouse button to click the wrench icon in the button bar. Both methods start the Date/Time configuration wizard. 4. Follow the instructions in the wizard to configure the date and time, or specify a Network Time Protocol (NTP) server to supply this information automatically. Setting up the call home function Use the call home function to set up your storage system to automatically send prefailure or failure notifications to the IBM Troubleshooting Ticketing system in the IBM Service Center. You can also set up call home to automatically send alerts directly to you. Call home cannot accept incoming communication, which means that the IBM Service Center cannot contact the storage system by using call home. When certain events occur in the system, call home sends a notification to the IBM Service Center. After you receive the notification, IBM service personnel analyze the problem promptly and take appropriate action. If the problem requires service, an IBM service representative is sent to your site with any necessary replacement parts. With access to the storage system, IBM service personnel can complete service tasks, such as viewing error logs or initiating trace and dump retrievals. Call home notifications are sent through email from a simple mail transport protocol (SMTP) server. The storage system's Mail Service function is used by the system to send outgoing call-home emails to IBM. Note: You must configure the SMTP email system by using the mail service function to enable the system to send outgoing emails for the call home function. (See Configuring the mail service on page 12. The email configuration rules must not inhibit call home emails from being sent in real time. Emails with Importance or X-Priority in the email header must not be delayed. For example, system emails must not be placed in a queue for later delivery or filtered for priority. Configuring the mail service The mail service function provides system event email notifications and the ability to email the system report directly for support purposes. About this task To configure the mail service settings, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. In the web interface, select the Services node in the tree and clicking the Mail node, which displays an overview pane. 2. Clicking the Configure button opens the configuration wizard. Use this wizard to enable available functions, to set the simple mail transport protocol (SMTP) server, and to enter target email addresses. Any available mail service functions can be enabled by checking the box that corresponds to the function. The SMTP server might be set manually or found automatically from DHCP by setting the server value to Default. 3. Specify up to five email targets to receive emails that are sent by the service. The flash-sc1@vnet.ibm.com email address is stored internally and does not need to be added manually. 4. You can customize the email source address by using the command-line interface: a. From a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) client, access the system by using the system IP address. b. Log in by using the default user name username and the default password password, or your system's unique user name and password. c. Enter system call_home_config <SMTP IP address><custom email address> at the command prompt. <SMTP IP address> can be the IP address of the default mail System SMTP server, or the IP address of a different SMTP of your choice. Configuring the support contact information The support contact information is used to route notifications from the IBM Troubleshooting Ticketing System to the IBM support team closest to your geographical location. About this task The contact information is also used by IBM representatives to notify you when a system requires service. Procedure 1. In the web interface, select the Services node in the tree and click Support, which displays an overview pane. 2. Click Configure button to open the configuration wizard. 3. Verify that the ISO Country Code is accurate. 4. Add a contact name, email address, and phone number. Verifying and updating the firmware and software After the initial configuration of the system is complete, IBM strongly recommends that you confirm whether a later level of firmware and software is available. and update to that level. About this task To check the firmware level and update it if necessary, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. First, check the installed code level. a. To use the management GUI, select Settings > General > Upgrade Software and then click Check for updates. b. To use the CLI, enter the system status command at the command prompt. 2. If a newer code level is available, install it before going into production. Firmware loads are not concurrent. To view the latest code level and obtain a new release of code if necessary, complete the following steps: a. Access the Fix Central support site on the web at www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral. b. Select your product from the Product list, then click Continue. c. Compare the code level on your system with the latest version in the list. If a newer code level is available, select the newest version fix level. d. Select All in the Filter by operating system drop-down list. e. Follow the instructions to download and install the updated code. Reformatting uninitialized flashcards If the storage system has been without power for more than one month, it is possible that the management GUI shows one or more flashcards as failed. The front panel may also show error messages such as Storage Offline. Before you begin This condition is NOT a failure. It is a characteristic of Enterprise Flash technologies that are used in the storage system. The remedy is to format the flash array. There is no immediate need to contact support if this condition is observed on first boot or if the storage system was powered off for more than one month. (You can verify the last power up date by selecting Logs in the GUI and verifying the date of the last entries.) About this task To log in to the command line interface and format the uninitialized flashcards, complete the following steps: Procedure 1. From a telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) client, access the system by using the system IP address. Installing the IBM FlashSystem 820 13

2. Log in using the default administrator username admin and the default password password, or your system's unique username and password. 3. At the command prompt, enter #diag to enter diagnostic mode. 4. To confirm the command, enter YES. 5. From the diagnostic menu, type 1. 6. To confirm the command, enter YES. 7. From the Format Flashcard submenu, either enter ALL to format all flashcards, or select an individual flashcard by typing flashcard-#where # is the slot number of the new flashcard. 8.
