Using FDR/UPSTREAM and your z/os Mainframe for File Level Data Protection for Linux on z Systems & USS Data. Patrick Fitzsimmons pfitz@fdrinnovation.com INNOVATION Data Processing August 8, 2017

Who I am and this session Patrick Fitzsimmons Product Manager FDR/UPSTREAM for 25 years 2

Son of Josephine Fitzsimmons Just Celebrated her 98th Birthday! 3

This session What are we going to cover? What s new Client z/os Storage Server Web Portal Director Living on the edge with a live demo 4

What is FDR/UPSTREAM? The FDR/UPSTREAM suite is a comprehensive business resiliency solution that provides data protection and business continuance for servers and databases everywhere in the enterprise. FDR/UPSTREAM provides a flexible and scalable solution for securing anything from single file server to the largest corporate data servers. Dual component system offering high performance, reliability and automation. Integrates with existing z/os tape management, scheduling, and security systems. UPSTREAM provides File level backup, online hot database support, and System level recovery. 5

Why the z/os mainframe The z/os mainframe with its unmatched RAS, outstanding I/O bandwidth and well restricted and protected environment provides an excellent platform for data protection. Especially if that client data already is resident on the z/os mainframe! 1 RAS (Reliability, Availability and Serviceability) 2 Outstanding I/O bandwidth 3 Well-restricted, protected & controlled environment, Not as susceptible to viruses and malware 4 Uses existing z/os tape management 5 Uses existing z/os job scheduling 6

Why the z/os mainframe 6 7 8 9 10 Uses existing z/os security systems Uses existing z/os tape library s Leverage using HiperSockets and 10GBE Mainframe data is more readily stored for long-term retention and archival. Existing mainframe users must already have procedures and methods in place to keep selected data for long-term storage. Government mandated data retention periods and tax data retention for example. Leverage existing expertise and practices of z/os storage administrators 7

What type of data protection do you want? Food for thought Your choices are: File Level Database Disaster Recovery and System recovery RPO RTO 8

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM FDR/UPSTREAM Web Portal version 2 The new Web Portal v2.0.00 features Updated modernized and streamlined user interface Introduces support for scheduled backup of VMware clients New way to manage backup administration of UPSTREAM clients Backend support added for Oracle and SQL Server databases 13

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM FDR/UPSTREAM Client v4.0 GA Huge rewrite of Windows code Significant performance improvement for UPSTREAM Windows Plugin resulting in: Faster creation of snapshots Faster preparation of Windows for restore and backups Faster Full and incremental scanning much faster scan a million or 100 million files for changes much less memory used 14

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM FDR/UPSTREAM z/os Storage Server Component v3.9.3 Version and file inquiry performance is improved for large restore requests Started task to client communications block sizes up to 1MB are supported for backup, restore and performance tests Improved ISPF panels includes a list of the running UPSTREAM started tasks on all LPAR's and their associated ISPF variables. Each started task can be selected for control of the started task definitions, configuration, job submission, and reporting 15

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM Support for z/os 2.3 Up to 25% Faster performance over 10GB & HiperSockets Improved internal communication Faster restores by improved changes to sorting prior to restore larger record sizes zedc support Support for USS and works well in compressing data. 16

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM zedc results Our testing of zedc with UPSTREAM backup of USS data showed interesting results & shows mileage will vary: reduced the space used by 50% reduced run time by 20% increased CPU time by 35% Customer results: Approx 24% decrease in CPU seconds Approx 50% reduction in number of bytes written Approx 40% increase in wall clock time 17

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM z/os Revised ISPF menu s Main ISPF panel includes a list of the running UPSTREAM started tasks on all LPAR s and their associated ISPF variables. Each STC can be selected for control of the STC definitions, configuration, job submission, and reporting. UPSTREAM started task and USTBATCH now use TCP/IP to initiate requests. SNA definitions are no longer required. Support for abbreviated Registered name Alternative to using FQDN (Fully Qualified DNS Name) for the Registered Name of a Linux on z System &shortname CPUB.IDPNJ.COM CPUB 18

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM UPSTREAM Web Portal v2.0 The Web Portal, using an application server and external database, provides a single web-hosted environment that has the ability to monitor, control, and perform UPSTREAM actions against multiple storage servers. No Need to know Profile Names. Can easily switch between systems. For end users, no need to be aware of the behind the scene backup setup. Besides providing Web Access, the Web Portal also has a set of data gathering tasks running that contact backup clients and also the storage servers to obtain statistics, scan backup versions, collect data set information and history, and so on. Uses an Apache Tomcat application server, or WebSphere, with a Derby database that becomes the foundation for the new Web Services provided. Version 2.0 supports Oracle and SQL Server. 22

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM UPSTREAM Web Portal Automated client upgrades Edit Client Configurations Storage Reporting of Data Protected TB protected, # of Files, # of Tapes Administrative Roles Assigned Restores User for Non-Admin personnel Point and Click Restores ORACLE RMAN configuration 23

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM The UPSTREAM Web Portal collects detailed information about the installed inventory of UPSTREAM clients including version, Operating systems platform, storage server it connects to, DNS or IP address, members of any groups, etc. This compilation of information provides a consistent dashboard view to the storage administrator for any of the supported UPSTREAM clients. 24

What s NEW for FDR/UPSTREAM Centralized Controlled of Client upgrades 27

Automated UPSTREAM Client Upgrades Client Upgrade provides an easy & intuitive way to upgrade client systems from a centrally located user interface. You are able to select based on a number of selection criteria. First you get the new client distribution from us via electronic download and you store it on your PC. Then you log into Portal, select client upgrade tab, click UPLOAD files button. That selects distribution file and transfers it up to the PORTAL on the mainframe. You can filter based on clients systems, installed versions, or groups you have created. Then you select a client systems, one or more, as you can multi select. You then add one or more clients by multi selecting and then hitting add. Then hit START the UPGRADE. At that point the new version that you have gotten from our distribution is upgraded. Details of the upgrade process are displayed & if not successful, the client software is rolled back to the prior version automatically. 28
