Metering systems 0447EN October 2013 M-BUS centralisation System overview In an system, there can be only one Master device. Introduction (the abbreviation of Meter-Bus ) is the European Standard for the remote reading of heat meters. It is also used for other types of consumption meters, and for devices (like sensors, actuators or regulators) fitted in HVAC systems. The system is designed to offer a simple, handy way of ensuring the mains connection and remote reading of meters residential applications and similar, with the aim of overcoming the restraints imposed by direct (sight) meter reading. The system fully complies with European Standard EN 1434 Heat meters - Part 3: data exchange and interfaces. Advantages There are various Bus systems - of the open or owner type - available on the market for building automation, safety, alarm monitoring, and so on. is specifically designed for the centralisation of consumption data and meter operating parameters, and it offers a series of distinctive characteristics: a high level of safety for data transmission; low costs for the laying of the Bus cable and the connection of the devices; long distances, without the need for signal amplifiers; a high number of devices that can be centralised; different types of connection that can be combined (star, tree, linear); data transmission speed suitable for the application; automatic detection and recognition of the devices connected. Main characteristics Type of communication Connection cable Communication in the signal network is of the Master-Slave type between the central unit (Master) and the measuring devices (Slaves) Use a twisted 2-wire non-shielded cable The official documentation on the system is published by the Usergroup - the international organisation of users and manufacturers of devices (see also www.m-bus.com). Branching To branch the connection cable, use standard terminals junction boxes; the IP protection degree of the boxes should be chosen on the basis of the environmental installation conditions Master-Slave Bus system The system belongs to the field Bus family, made up of information transmission systems based on a common medium; the devices for receiving and transmitting information are connected to this medium. The information is codified in digital format and transmitted as data telegrams in serial mode. The transmission method is asynchronous and half-duplex, controlled by the Master device. The medium is a simple 2-wire cable to which all the devices are connected in parallel. Topology Addressing The topology of the signal network can assume a linear, tree or star configuration; ring configuration is not allowed. The termination of the line is not necessary. To unmistakably distinguish the Slave devices connected to the, it is necessary to implement the initial start-up. See page 4 SLAVE SLAVE SLAVE Transmission speed The transmission speed on the network may be 300, 2400, 9600 Baud, depending on the number and type of devices, the distances, the section and the cable route MASTER Reference Standards is a Standard defined in UNI EN 1434 SLAVE SLAVE Data acquisition The acquisition of data from the Slave devices may be manual or automatic Figure 1 - Schematic outline of an system is an open system: the technical specifications and communication protocol are publicly available. Thanks to this, the devices of different manufacturers can be connected on the network, and can thereby exchange information. is a Master-Slave system; communication is controlled by a single device (Master) that cyclically interrogates the other devices (Slaves) to gather the information. A Slave cannot communicate on its own initiative - it must wait to be interrogated by the Master. Alongside the data concentrator function, the Master usually offers additional functions such as data storage (data-logger) and remote control via a telephone line and a modem. 1

Metering systems 0447EN October 2013 M-BUS centralisation System overview Topology The devices can be connected on the basis of a star, tree or Bus-row network topology, or any combination of these. The ring closure of the signal network is not allowed. Star configuration Connection cable To connect the devices, you are advised to use a non-shielded cable with 2 twisted wires. The most common wire sections are: - 16 AWG (corresponding to 1,310 mm²) - 18 AWG (corresponding to 0,823 mm²) where AWG is the acronym of American Wire Gauge (the American system for classifying cable diameters and sections). When choosing the most suitable section, bear in mind the number of devices and the distance from the central unit (Master). See also table 1. to make tracking easier, you are advised to label the cables and terminals used for wiring. In the points where a connection is made between two parts of an line, or between the signal network and an device, it is a good idea to use terminals and junction boxes for the electricity installation. For the electric connections, the Giacomini modules and user satellites have a terminal board inside a plastic container (IP55 protection degree) fixed to the box. The star configuration of several lines connected to the central unit is always recommended, because in this way just the specific line can be switched off (selective disconnection) in the event of a fault or maintenance, and any problems can be identified more easily. Example: terminal board in the user module Terminal board for electric connections Tree configuration Bus-row configuration The modules and satellites are supplied with a plastic connection point in place of the meter flow rate measurement section on the heating/airconditioning return unit. The energy meter must be ordered separately; on the worksite, it is assembled and connected to the specific terminals reserved for in the IP55 box. Warning. The cable cannot be laid in the same conduit as the mains power supply cable (230 V AC, 50 Hz). You are advised to maintain a distance of at least 2 m from the inverter and other power devices, to avoid any possible electrical interference. Warning. The devices must not be connected in a ring configuration. 2

Metering systems 0447EN October 2013 M-BUS centralisation System overview Signal network planning With regards signal network planning, remember that there are numerous interdependent parameters: the size of the building, the number and type of devices, the distance from the central unit, the transmission speed, the type and section of cable, the length and route of the segments. Transmission speed The communication interface of the devices is compatible with a transmission speed between 300 and 9600 Baud. The Giacomini devices communicate at a speed of 2400 Baud. Type of building Small residential buildings Large residential buildings Small complexes Large complexes Medium-sized area Point-to-point connection Warning. If the connection cable is laid outside the building, the devices may be subjected to overvoltages caused by lightning, so they must be adequately protected. Maximum distance between the central unit and the first device [m] Total cable length [m] 350 1000 350 4000 Section 16 AWG or 18 AWG 16 AWG 18 AWG Number of devices (Slaves) Connection Note, for example, the first row of table 1: the maximum distance between the first Slave device (meter) connected to the line and the central unit is 350 m; this distance is applied for a standard configuration with a transmission speed between 300 and 9600 Baud, a maximum of 250 Slave devices connected, and a total line length (the sum of all the segments, measured along the cable) less than - or equal to - 1000 m. The maximum distance can be increased by choosing a cable with a larger section and/or using fewer Slave devices. The voltage on the Bus must not be less than 24V DC at any point. 250 250 64 1000 4000 16AWG 64 3000 5000 16AWG 64 5000 7000 16 AWG 16 10000 10000 16 AWG 1 Table 1 - Relation between the variables of an system Central units The GE552-4 central units act as data concentrators, level converters, data-loggers and user interfaces for reading purposes. They allow you to read the devices connected to the network, thanks to the keyboard and display on the front. This means that all the devices can be read from one single position, eliminating the need to move around the building, open the box doors, or even enter a private home in the case of internal installation. The central units differ for the maximum number of devices that can be connected to them; in fact the central unit should be chosen when you know the exact number of devices to be connected for data centralisation. If the energy meters of the GE552 range are used as Slave devices, refer to the information below. For other Slave devices to be centralised but not supplied by Giacomini (such as electricity and gas meters, sensors, actuators, etc.), refer to the relative instructions. For buildings or building complexes with more than 250 devices to be connected to the, or in the case of particularly extensive systems, you can use repeaters. Central unit code The need to assign a primary address arises mainly when there is a system of a higher level (e.g. supervision) that must interrogate all the devices. In this case, the primary address offers an advantage because it is made up of just 3 figures so allows the devices to be identified more quickly. Warning. The central unit must be installed less than 2 m from inverters or other power devices. Max no. of devices that can be connected Technical datasheet code Outputs for lines GE552Y006 20 0287IT 3 GE552Y007 60 0288IT 3 Picture The network does not require any termination, so line-end resistors are not needed. GE552Y008 120 0289IT 4 Addressing system The system offers two types of address so that the central unit can unmistakably distinguish the devices connected: a primary address and a secondary address. GE552Y010 250 Table 2 - Central units GE552-4 Primary address The primary address is made up of 3 figures. At consignment, the GE552 energy meters have no assigned primary address. Secondary address The secondary address is made up of 8 figures and is assigned to each meter in the factory; it corresponds to the manufacture number and is different for each device. Barring exceptions, this is the address that the central unit uses to individually interrogate the various devices to obtain the consumption data and other information. 3

Metering systems 0447EN October 2013 M-BUS centralisation System overview Initial start-up Before the initial start-up of the system, make sure that: the material (devices and central unit) has been supplied, installed and electrically connected; the product and project documentation has been read; the meters (energy and sanitary water) have been installed in the right direction (arrow on the brass section corresponding to the flow direction); a cross-reference table has been drawn up for the meters and the apartments (manufacture number - apartment identification). For the initial system start-up, the GE552-4 central units have a function enabling them to automatically recognise the devices connected to the Bus. The search is made via the secondary address, and detects the devices connected. If one or more devices are not detected, you must insert the missing addresses manually; to do this, always use the secondary addresses, as shown on the front of the device (as they correspond to the manufacture number). Consumption data acquisition MANUAL acquisition Locally, on the display of the central unit, by pressing the keys on the front of the device AUTOMATIC acquisition 1.
