The C6100 features the MPC7457 G4 PowerPC processor at speed of up to 1.267 GHz for the air-cooled version, and 1.0 GHz for the conduction-cooled configuration, ideal for computation-intensive applications. The C6100 is the first VMEbus single-board computer (SBC) designed with the Tundra Tsi148 VMEbus interface chip offering 2eSST VMEbus performance. The 2eSST protocol allows the VMEbus to run at up to a practical bandwidth of 320 MB/s. To ensure that the C6100 can handle the 320MB/s data rates of 2eSST, the Tsi148 VMEbus interface chip is connected to one of the 133 MHz PCI-X buses on the host bridge. This implementation of the Emerson PowerPlusII VME Architecture provides one of the highest levels of performance and I/O versatility available on a rugged VMEbus board. The C6100 utilizes leading edge technologies such as Emerson's low power, high-performance PowerPC processors, a 100 MHz PCIbus for high throughput on-board peripherals, a new integrated Ethernet bridge and memory controller designed by Marvell, and a sophisticated VMEbus interface, to achieve levels of performance and functionality not previously possible. The DSP-like AltiVec technology incorporated into the PowerPC processor, allows the C6100 to be used for an assortment of vector processing applications.

Ideal for a variety of military, aerospace and industrial applications that require supercomputing levels of performance, the C6100 provides up to 2 GB of DDR ECC protected SDRAM, and includes dual PMC slots (one for the conduction-cooled version) providing an open standard for convenient and flexible I/O expansion. The air-cooled C6100-A also supports Emerson s legacy IPMC712 or IPMC761 PMC I/O modules, which provide additional rear panel SCSI, parallel, and serial I/O capabilities. With its standard mechanical format, this single-width 6U x 160 mm VMEbus module can be installed into any standard IEEE 1101.2 conduction cooled VME or ANSI/VITA 1-1994 standard air-cooled chassis, providing a true COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) solution suitable for embedded systems applications in any kind of harsh operating environment. Overview Aitech's C6100 PowerPC SBC is a rugged VMEbus 2eSST module designed to deliver high levels of computing power and multiple I/O functionality to severe environment applications. The C6100 is a ruggedized version of the Emerson MVME6100 board, offering users the best of two worlds. It combines a well engineered state-of-the-art commercial Emerson product with the most advanced ruggedization technology based on Aitech s vast experience in the field of rugged and military computer systems. The C6100 is a single-slot PowerPC-based VME computer, available with a MPC7457 processor. The board features a total of up to 2 GB of DDR SDRAM protected by ECC and 128 MB of onboard programmable user Flash. Dual Ethernet interfaces, two asynchronous serial ports, a realtime clock, four general purpose timers, and a watchdog timer are also implemented on the board. The C6100 supports two single-width or one double-width PMC mezzanine, and provides PMC I/O lines routed to both the front panel and the P2 connector. The air-cooled (C6100-A) version of this board requires a single VME slot and can be installed in any standard ANSI/VITA 1-1994 VME enclosure. I/O signals are routed to both the front panel of the board and the P2 connector. In order to access all the I/O signals on P2, a 5-row VME64x compatible backplane is required. Packaged as a single-slot VME module, the conduction-cooled ruggedized C6100-R conforms to the IEEE 1101.2 standard for rugged Eurocard-based subsystems (with the exception that it cannot be installed in standard air-cooled enclosures). Installed in any standard 1101.2- compliant conduction-cooled VMEbus chassis, all external interfaces are accessed through the P2 connector of the VME backplane. A rich set of firmware and software tools and options, including on board monitor and diagnostic firmware, complement the C6100 hardware and provide support for the most used real-time operating systems. Central Processing Unit Equipped with the Freescale MPC7457 G4 PowerPC, the C6100 delivers unmatched computing power while minimizing power dissipation. A separate 64-bit Level 3 cache bus, which can transfer data at a 200 Mhz clock rate, improves processor performance while offloading cache traffic from the main CPU/memory bus. 128-bit double precision, floating-point coprocessor vector unit, 32 kb on-chip instruction and L2 data caches, along with dynamic branch prediction, significantly increase processing power. The C6100 is available with 1.267 GHz version of the MPC7457 CPU for applications that require highest performance, or a 1.0 GHz version for lower power consumption. Custom special order configurations offer even lower power consumption using reduced core operation frequencies.

Architecture The C6100 is an implementation of Freescale s PowerPlus II Architecture. This architecture eliminates bottlenecks on the PowerPC bus, the PCI bus and the VMEbus, optimally decoupling each bus from the others. The new Tundra system memory controller allows the processor to utilize its full bandwidth when accessing main memory over the 133 MHz front-side bus and minimize performance reduction due to data transfers to the slower PCI bus. Memory DDR ECC Protected SDRAM Memory The C6100 can be configured with 2 GB DDR SDRAM with ECC. The ECC mechanism detects double bit errors and corrects single bit errors, greatly enhancing system reliability. Coupled to the 133 MHz high bandwidth processor/memory bus, the 64-bit, single interleave DRAM structure provides fast memory access in all operation modes. Flash Memory 128 MB of on-board programmable user Flash memory. Boot Flash Memory 128 MB of soldered Flash in two banks of 64 MB each, for firmware and system software. NVRAM 32 kb of NVRAM with battery backup. 4k B of the NVRAM space is available for users to save system information, configuration parameters, etc. VMEbus Interface A complete high performance VMEbus interface is implemented with the Tundra Tsi148 bus controller. The master-slave interface includes the system controller function and high speed DMA transfer capability to support the more advanced VME modes. All VMEbus options are software-programmable. The VMEbus interface operates in A32/A24/A16 addressing modes, performing D64/D32/D16/ D08 2eSST as well as BLT64 data transfers. The DMA feature fully supports the VMEbus D64 extension and also 64-bit PCI local bus memory burst cycles. It can be programmed to both Round Robin and Prioritized arbitration schemes. The controller also includes a 4-level requester, a 7-level VME interrupt generator and a 7-level VME interrupt handler. Additional VMEbus features include two LMA32 location monitors. PCI Bus The main connecting path between functional blocks in Emerson s PowerPlusII Architecture is a 64-bit wide PCI bus clocked at 33 to 100 MHz. It also supports 32-bit 33/66 MHz PCI controllers. The PCI local bus interfaces with the CPU/ memory subsystem through a sophisticated PCI Bridge that maximizes decoupling between the processor bus and the PCI bus to increase system performance. The local PCI bus on the C6100 is also used to provide an I/O expansion feature. This interface allows the user to enhance and customize the I/O capabilities of the module by installing PMC modules (See I/O interface) Ethernet Interface The C6100 contains an Ethernet Controller integrated into the host bridge providing two standard 10/100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps (GbE) Fast Ethernet links. One Ethernet interface can be directly connected to a 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 1000BaseTX (twisted pair) network through the P2 connector or the front panel. The other Ethernet interface is available on the front panel only. Serial Interfaces Two asynchronous serial ports having a maximum baud rate of 38.4 kbps (115.2 kbps raw), are provided by a 16C550C UART. The electrical interface is a standard EIA-232-D. On air-cooled boards one serial port is routed to the P2 connector and the other to the front panel for debug purposes. On conduction-cooled boards both serial ports are routed to the P2 connector. I/O Interface PMC Slots Two IEEE 1386-2001 PMC slots are provided for flexible I/O expansion (due to thermal constraints, only one PMC slot is available on the C6100-R conduction-cooled board). The PMC slots include four connectors (PN1, PN2, PN3,

PN4) and support A32/D32/D64 operation at bus clock speeds of 33 to 100 MHz per PCI standard Rev 3.0. The board provides all the standard voltages (+3.3V, +5V, ±12V) to the PMC slot and accepts two single-width PMCs or one doublewidth PMC. IPMC Modules The IPMC761 or IPMC712 are optional add-on PMC modules for the C6100-A air-cooled board, providing backward compatibility with previous generation Emerson products (e.g. MVME2700, MVME5100/5500). The IPMC modules provide: One single-ended Ultra-Wide SCSI port One Centronics parallel port Four serial ports - synchronous or asynchronous depending on IPMC type and configuration. The IPMC761 has TTL to P2 and IPMC712 have EIA-232 to P2. Emerson I/O transition modules are available to provide industry-standard connectors and IPMC761 serial port configuration options. Front Panel I/O The air-cooled C6100-A is equipped with a front panel including the following: Dual RJ45 for the Ethernet interfaces A connector for the asynchronous serial port Combined Abort/Reset switch Status LEDs The conduction-cooled C6100-R does not have front panel I/O connections. Timers General Purpose Timers Four 32-bit programmable timers for system timing or to generate interrupts. Time-of-Day Timer Real Time Clock with battery backup. Watchdog Timer Forces a reset if the watchdog is not serviced within the required interval. Power Requirements +5 V (±5%) 8.4 A (typ) 10.2 A (max) (not including any power required by PMCs) Mechanical Features The C6100 is available in both air-cooled and conduction-cooled mechanical formats, with features and dimensions as specified by the following standards: Air cooled: per ANSI/VITA 1-1994 Conduction cooled: per IEEE 1101.2-1992 (cannot be mounted in standard air-cooled enclosures since wedgelocks are flush with board edges) Both mechanical formats are single slot 6U x 160 mm Eurocard modules. A custom metal frame provides excellent rigidity and shock resistance, and includes an array of stiffeners to support rugged PMCs. Thermal Management A careful mechanical design including custom heatsinks combined with a metal frame allow for optimal heat dissipation and relief of the board. Software Support Firmware: The C6100 comes with a full package of firmware, incorporaing all the standard tools: hardware initialization and power-up tests, a powerful monitor/debugger tool that allows monitoring and debugging in the field when no other debugging tools are available, Flash memory programming tools, and an extensive suite of diagnostic tests. The C6100 firmware also supports booting from different operating systems.
