Remove your old console 1. Take time to verify that the Stairmaster machine operates correctly before removing the old console. This step will help with troubleshooting should you encounter any difficulties with the rest of the installation. 2. Disconnect the machine from the electrical outlet. 3. Loosen and remove the 4 console knob screws located at the rear of the console. Stratus bikes: Loosen and remove the 2 console knob screws located at the rear of the console. Lift the console and its attached bracket off of the Bike. 4. Disconnect all cables from the machine to the console. Stratus bikes: Detach the black metal bracket from the old console by loosening and removing the four bolts that hold the bracket in place. Save the black metal bracket, the 2 console knobs, and the four bracket bolts, as they will be needed for completion of the C40 installation. B. Install the Adapter Cables 1. Choose the correct Adapter Cable(s) for your machine. Main Cable: The 4600 CL and 4400 CL machines use a 7-wire cable, PN 27823. The 4400 PT, 4600 PT, and the 7000 PT use a 5-wire cable, PN 27822. The Stratus bikes use a 9-wire cable, PN 27824. A part number tag is located on the cable. Contact Heart Rate Cable: There is only one adapter cable for the contact heart rate cables, and it is universal for all machines. Page 1 of 5

STRATUS BIKES: the main adapter cables and the contact heart rate cables must be connected to the back of the new console before the black metal bracket is reinstalled. Verify that the gold pins in the Adapter Cable (PN 27824) are visually straight. If necessary, use a small screwdriver to straighten a bent pin. Attach the 20-pin connector from the Adapter Cable to the 20-pin connector on the back of the console. Attach the Contact HR adapter cable (PN 27833) included with your upgrade kit to the corresponding connector on the console. 3. FREECLIMBERS OR 7000 PT: the contact heart rate cable and/or main adapter cable must be connected to the existing cables from the machine. Verify that the gold pins in the Adapter Cable are visually straight. If necessary, use a small screwdriver to straighten a bent pin. Attach the square end of the Adapter Cable to the square main cable connector on the FreeClimber, or 7000 PT machine. The two connectors should slide easily into each other. If your machine has contact heart rate, attach the Contact HR adapter cable (PN 27833) included with your upgrade kit to the corresponding cables from the machine. Ensure that the brown wire on the adapter cable aligns with the brown wire on the console connector, and likewise for the orange, black, and red wires. 4. Disregard the old Polar heart rate cable it is a small plastic connector with three wires. This cable is not used with the C40 Console and can be left disconnected. C. Install the new C40 Console 1. Install the Magazine Rack: 4400PT OR 4400CL: Insert the magazine rack into the slots on the back of the console, and place the Spacer (PN 27797) over the rack to trap it in place. STRATUS BIKES: Insert the magazine rack into the slots on the back of the console, and place the Spacer (PN 27797) over the rack to trap it in place. Place the black metal bracket (from the old console) onto the Spacer, and install and tighten the four bolts (also from the old console) to hold the bracket in place. Be sure that the adapter cables protrude from the circular opening in the bracket. 4600PT, 4600CL, OR 7000 PT: Insert the magazine rack into the slots on the back of the console, and hold in place. Magazine rack 2. Have someone hold the console while you attach the cables from the machine to the back of the console, as shown in the picture below. Push all excess cable down into the upright neck of the machine, so that very little cable length is curled up behind the console. Page 3 of 5
3. Trap the magazine rack between the console and the machine console mounting bracket. Insert and tighten the four console knob screws. D. Configure the Software 1. If your machine is a FreeClimber 4400/4600 PT, or a 7000 PT, plug the machine into the electrical outlet. If your machine is a FreeClimber 4400/4600 CL, step onto the pedals. If your machine is a Stratus, start pedaling. The console display will light up, and after a few seconds SELECT WORKOUT will appear. 2. Press [^], [8], [0] on the console keypad. CHANGE MACHINE will appear on the display. Press 3. Press [SELECT] until your machine ( STEPPER, BIKE, or STEPMILL ) is displayed on the console, then press 4. If you encounter problems at this stage, see the troubleshooting table on page 5. E. Test the Machine 1. Exercise on the machine to test and make sure that no abnormal noise is heard and that the machine functions properly. Page 4 of 5

Verify that the Contact Heart Rate adapter harness is correctly connected. The contact heart rate feature may be switched off in software. From the SELECT WORKOUT screen, press [^], then [3], then [2], then [ENTER] to select HR INPUTS. Press the [SELECT] key to pick BOTH HR ON or BOTH NOT LOCKED, and press The telemetry heart rate feature may be switched off in software. From the SELECT WORKOUT screen, press [^], then [3], then [2], then [ENTER] to select HR INPUTS. Press the [SELECT] key to pick BOTH HR ON or BOTH NOT LOCKED, and press If the console detects false heart beats when a person is stepping on the pedals or staircase when there is no chest strap nearby, the main Adapter Cable may be located too close to the console. Remove the console mount screws, push the excess cable down the upright trunk of the machine, and reinstall the screws. Move machine to a different location, away from televisions, air conditioners, and similar equipment.
