R E L E A S E N O T E S Waters Fraction Collector III with Empower Instrument Control Software Version 1.00 These release notes explain how to install Waters Instrument Control Software (ICS), version 1.00, for the Waters Fraction Collector III with Empower software (build 1154) and Empower 2 software (build 2154). These notes also explain how to replace the original read only memory (ROM) chip in the fraction collector with one that supports the Waters Fraction Collector III controlled by Empower ICS v1.00. However, Waters recommends a Waters service representative replace the old ROM chip with the new one, which accompanies the software. Note: In Empower, only one Fraction Collector is supported per each LC system. Installation notes Recommendation: Back up all of your Empower projects, library information, and databases before installing this software. Requirement: Replace the old ROM chip before you install the Waters Fraction Collector III (WFC III) instrument control software. Keep the old chip in a safe location. You will need it should you ever want to revert to the original method of operating the fraction collector. Tested software and firmware For English, the ICS for the Waters Fraction Collector III (WFC III) was tested with base Empower 2 software (build 2154) Feature Release 3 (FR3) and Feature Release 5 (FR5), and with Empower Software (build 1154) Service Pack L. For Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean), the ICS for the WFC III was tested with Empower 2 software (build 2154) FR3 and FR5. Empower 1154 Japanese requires the 1154-J SystemsQT Service Pack. The version of WFC III firmware tested in this release is W260E. Replacing the ROM chip Recommendation: Have your Waters service representative install the ROM chip. If you choose to install the chip yourself, follow the procedure below to replace the original ROM chip in the fraction collector with one that supports the Waters Fraction Collector III controlled by Empower ICS v1.00. To replace the ROM chip: 1. Power-off the WFC III. 2. Disconnect all external connections, including the power cord and I/O terminal connections. Warning: To avoid electric shock, make sure the unit is powered-off and all electrical supply cords are disconnected. 3. Using a Philips-head screwdriver, remove the 6 screws that hold the back cover in place and set them aside. 4. Remove the back cover. 5. Locate the ROM chip in the circuit board. Requirement: Note the orientation and position of the original chip. The orientation and position of the new chip must mirror that of the original; otherwise the chip will be damaged. 6. Remove the ROM chip by gripping it firmly on both sides and gently pulling it outward, perpendicular to the circuit board. 7. Attach the new ROM chip that accompanied the Waters Fraction Collector III controlled by Empower ICS v1.00, pushing it firmly into place. Page 2 of 7
Requirement: Install the new chip using the same orientation and position as the original chip, with the notch on the left-hand side. If you do not insert the chip using the correct orientation, the chip will be damaged. Note: Do not discard the original ROM chip. Keep it in a safe, accessible place. You will need it should you ever want to revert to the original method of operating the fraction collector. 8. Replace the back cover and its screws. Tighten the screws using the Phillips-head screwdriver. 9. Reconnect the external connections and power cord. 10. Power-on the fraction collector. Installing the WFC III ICS The WFC III ICS consists of these components: Driver Needed for Empower software to communicate with the module. User interface Includes the instrument method editor and control panels in Empower Quick Start and Run Samples utility. Online Help Access Help when working with an instrument method by pressing the F1 key while using the instrument method editor. During installation of this software, only the files required by the software are installed. No Oracle or system files are affected. To use the ICS software on an Empower Enterprise (client/server) system, you must install the software on every computer, LAC/E 32 module, and client that interacts with the WFC III, its methods, or results. For consistency, the Instrument Control Software (ICS) should be installed on all clients and LAC/E 32 modules. You need not install the ICS software on the database server unless the server hosts client software and interacts with the instrument, its methods, or results. Note: For Windows XP and Windows Vista,.NET 3.0 is required and will be installed automatically, if it is not already installed. For Windows 2000,.NET 2.0 is required and must be installed manually. General installation instructions using ICS media: 1. Power-off the WFC III and reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Insert the WFC III control option disk in the media drive. 4. Browse to the root of the disk and double-click the setup.exe file. 5. Follow all prompts to finish the installation. 6. Validation Information After you install or uninstall the WFC III ICS on a qualified system, Waters recommends determining your requalification needs according to your laboratory s standard operating procedures. If this is an initial installation of Empower in a GxP-regulated environment, perform a full qualification of Empower Software. Waters recommends that you run the Verify Files utility or the ConnectionsAQT for Empower IQ and review the resulting file for an entry that states No installation changes were detected. Note: The date displayed when running Verify Files (IQ) always reflects the last installation. See the Empower.log file for the complete history. Verifying the Installation To verify the installation, select Start > All Programs > Empower > Empower Installation Log. Search for lines similar to this: ************************************************************ Installed WFC III Software 1.00 on 19-November-2009 14:14:55. ************************************************************ The installation of any option or service pack is documented in the checksum.txt file on your Empower computer. This file indicates the installation of any option(s) or service pack(s) and verifies the integrity of disk files by comparing their current CRCs and sizes with original values recorded during installation of the base software and any installed option or service pack. This file is created when you run the Verify Files utility by selecting Start > Programs > Empower > Verify Files. Page 4 of 7
To display the checksum.txt file, navigate to the \Empower\Script directory, and then doubleclick the checksum.txt file. Uninstalling the ICS for the WFC III To assure that file verification can be done successfully following the removal of the ICS, you must reboot the computer before you uninstall the ICS. To remove any version of the WFC III ICS from your system: 1. Reboot the computer. 2. Log in to the computer using an account with local administrator privilege. 3. Open the control panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs. 4. At the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click the Change or Remove Programs icon. 5. Click the version of WFC III ICS that is on your system, and then click the Change/Remove button. 6. Follow the prompts to remove the control software from your system. The registry and new CRC checksums are updated for the Empower installation. No Oracle or system files are affected. Known issues When uninstalling the ICS, if you receive a message telling you to reboot the Empower computer, you may encounter an error message after reboot. The 3-way collection valve must always be installed and configured. If %Peak collection is set to 0 and %Monitor within window is set to a value other than 0, all the peaks and non-peaks will be collected into vessels. In the Empower instrument method editor, the Instrument Off option is not supported. In an Empower sample set, when no injection occurs from HPLC (for example, when using Equilibrate or Condition Column), the WFCIII will not start collection and therefore will not plot a chromatogram. If the dropper is at drain, the control panel current position displays the vessel position which is going to be filled. For the Condition Column function, define a method set that does not trigger any fractions, so that no tubes are consumed. The window start time is considered as 1 sec if 0.00 min is entered as a start time in the instrument method. During override, the peak number field in the comprehensive report reflects only the first vessel of each manual collection. Page 5 of 7
