An electrical transient is a temporary excess of voltage/current in an electrical circuit which only lasts milliseconds. They occur in all types of electrical, data, and communications circuits. Most people think of lightning as the primary cause of electrical anomolies, but 80% of transients are generated inside the facility. The simple act of turning on or off a light or electrical device can disturb the circuit and create a transient. Generally, the larger the load current of the device the greater the disturbance it causes. What Do Transients Do? Transients damage and destroy. The more sensitive the electronics in a device the more susceptible it is to ruin by transients. Everyone knows a big surge (i.e. lightning strike) can blow up equipment in its electrical path. But did you know that even tiny surges can degrade the electronics in your PLC s, drive electronics, and computers? Small surges caused by something as simple as turning on lights and switching on and off power supplies can damage electronics reducing their life span. What Is The Solution? We can advise you on the best transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) devices to fit your needs and budget. A surge suppressor (not an arrestor) has low resistance built into its circuitry allowing excess current to enter the device before entering your electrical system. A surge suppressor will then redirect the excess voltage to its components and shunt the large transient to ground thus saving all of the electronic devices within the structure from damage. By installing surge suppression you will be insuring the longevity of all of your expensive electronics and equipmentand changing fewer light bulbs! Product Selection Guidelines While technology and the complex design of surge protection devices (SPDs) has improved, the amount of confusion over their specifications has not. So, how do you select the proper device for your application? The best course of action is to call our office and let us assist you; however, following these parameters will help you make an informed decision. 1. Compare Manufacturers When comparing manufacturers, it is imperative that they provide the following information: IEEE C62.41 Measured Limited Voltage Chart. A1 through C3. This is the only way to compare the performance of one SPD product against another. During testing, it is highly critical that a parallel connected device have a 6 lead length to simulate actual installation. This lead length will demonstrate the true performance of the product when performing in your application. A UL 1449 test should also be listed. This will differentiate the arrestor from the suppressor. 2. Peak Surge Current (strength of device) Many manufacturers provide confusing or vague information pertaining to their product specifications. The claims they make need to be backed up with proper documentation. The information collected by the manufacturer should originate from a U.L. listed laboratory and conform to IEEE, UL, and Nema standards. 3. IEEE let through voltages (the amount of excess voltage which is let through to your equipment) 4. Which SPD is correct for your application (gas tube, silicon avalanche diode, MOV, capacitor) 5. Warranty Read and completely understand the warranty. Ironically, many manufacturers exclude surge related events in their warranty! This may be your biggest surprise in the process! Beware of warranties that do not cover: lightning, acts of God, normal wear and tear, etc.

IS-005 TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSORS MANUFACTURED BY A DELTA COMPANY SURGE SUPPRESSION LEADER BY DESIGN FUSED (L or D suffix) MODEL NOTES: All Fused (L or D) models are equipped with Gould type VSP40-2 fuses except PTX640 and PTE640 (D) models which are equipped with Class RK5 fuses. Punch or drill hole through suppressor enclosure for minimum connecting wire length. Assure that no internal components are disturbed or damaged. Caution should be taken to capture and remove all metal shavings during drilling process to avoid a possible short circuit condition. CIRCUIT INTERRUPT DEVICES: Suppressor must be connected to electrical system via the circuit interrupt device as specified in the Product Identification and Installation Requirements Table (this does not apply to integrally Fused (L or D) models). One (1) triple pole/single throw circuit breaker sized according to Product Identification and Installation Requirements Table. NOTE 1: pre-existing breakers of rated load size may be utilized if provisions for multi-conductor connections are made according to U.S. NEC 110-14a (or other applicable country codes). NOTE 2: avoid utilizing a pre-existing breaker which when operated will cause a critical system to shut down. Three (3) single pole/single throw circuit breakers sized according to the Product Identification and Installation Requirements Table on page 3. Three (3) Fuses sized according to the Product Identification and Installation Requirements Table. INSTALLATION CONNECTION AND WIRING INSTRUCTIONS: IMPORTANT: Suppressor should be located so that the shortest possible conductor length may be used. Conductors should be bound or twisted together to reduce impedance factor. Excessive wire length and sharp bends degrade suppressor performance; therefore, avoid excessive wire length and sharp bends. STEP 1: REMOVE POWER FROM ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BEFORE INSTALLING SUPPRESSOR STEP 2: Mechanically mount suppressor Mount through panel knockout using conduit fitting as well as suppressor mounting brackets, feet, holes, or other mounting means provided. Assure weatherproof conduit and fittings are used to maintain NEMA 4 (IP66) or 4X rating when required. Mount suppressor to ensure shortest and straightest possible conductor length is used from suppressor to circuit interrupt device to the system bus bar. Twist or bind conductors as much as possible. NOTE: If installing suppressor on system other than electrical panel, mount the suppressor in close proximity to the system being protected using necessary means for mounting. A circuit interrupt device is still required when installing on a system other than an electrical panel (not applicable to Fused (L or D suffix) models). STEP 3: Wire suppressor into electrical system Measure and cut conductors (wires) to ensure length is adequate while keeping conductors as short as possible for optimum suppressor performance. NOTE: If Suppressor does not have wires provided, obtain wires as specified in the Product Identification and Installation Requirements Table. Connect Ground (Earth) wire to the system Ground (Earth) bus bar. (For systems utilizing isolated grounds, please see Isolated Ground bullet in the Before Installation section of these instructions). Connect Phase wires to system phases, one phase wire per each phase, via the circuit interrupt device. NOTE: If Suppressor is connected as a Corner Ground Delta (CGD), band corner grounded phase with Green tape. STEP 4: Verification and power up Verify installation is complete as per these instructions and applicable codes and regulations. Once verified and lid is closed securely, apply power to device. For units with LEDs: LEDs should be glowing and alarm contacts should move to normal state. If lights do not glow, remove power and contact supplier. For units with contacts: Suppressor is equipped with two sets of contacts. One set (labeled N/O) is normally open and the other (labeled N/C) is normally closed with power applied. Contacts are rated at 60 W or 100 VA maximum voltage is 150 VDC or 220 VAC and 2 Amps maximum. Connections may be used for remote alarm hook up. 2001 Innovative Technology, Inc., 1--647-TVSS (8877), 352-799-0713, NNi.P65 6/11/01 page 2 of 4

IS-016 STEP B: Choose suppressor installation location so that maximum separation can be maintained between input leads, output leads and ground leads. Suppressor must be mounted within enclosure to assure personnel safety from exposed terminals. SUPPRESSOR MUST BE CONNECTED TO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM VIA ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CIRCUIT INTERRUPT DEVICES: 1-Single Pole/Single Throw, 30 Amp circuit breaker(s). NOTE: Pre-existing breaker(s) of rated load size may be utilized if provisions for multi-conductor connections are made according to N.E.C. 110-14A. 1-Class RK5 fuse(s) (such as Bussmann FRN-R-30 for less than 250 VAC or FRS-R-30 for voltages greater than 250 VAC) If Neutral wire is to be utilized as HOT 2 then circuit interrupt should be provided for that phase. NOTE: Suppressor is equipped with two sets of contacts. One set (labeled N/O) is normally open and the other set (labeled N/C) is normally closed with power applied. These contacts are rated at 0.5 Amps at 125 VAC or 1.0 Amps at 30 VDC. These connections are to be used for alarm hook up. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: STEP 1: REMOVE POWER FROM ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BEFORE INSTALLING SUPPRESSOR. STEP 2: STEP 3: Mechanically mount suppressor: Mount suppressor via mounting brackets. Suppressor should be mounted to allow maximum separation between input and output wiring. Suppressor contains no position-oriented components and can be mounted upside down or sideways. Suppressor should be placed in electrical circuit so that it is last device in circuit before equipment to be protected. Mounting feet adaptable to DIN Rail systems DIN EN 50022, DIN EN 50035 and DIN EN 50045 are available through Innovative Technology, Inc. Order Desk and can be ordered as option (order Part # E0234). To install, attach mounting foot to suppressor brackets using holes and provided screws. Slide suppressor in slot and let stud go through hole. Make certain LED is visible. Tighten lockwasher and nut. Push mounting foot onto DIN rail. Wire suppressor into electrical system: Connect incoming system GROUND wire to terminal labeled "GND" on unprotected end (labeled "LINE"). Connect load side GROUND wire to terminal labeled "GND" on protected end (labeled "EQUIPMENT"). Connect incoming system NEUTRAL or second phase wire to terminal labeled "NEU/HOT2" on unprotected end (labeled as "LINE") side. Connect load side NEUTRAL or second phase wire to terminal labeled "NEU/HOT2" on protected end (labeled as "EQUIPMENT"). Connect incoming system PHASE wire to terminal labeled "HOT1" on unprotected end (labeled "LINE"). Connect load side PHASE wire to terminal labeled as "HOT1" on protected end (labeled "EQUIPMENT"). Connect ALARM leads to Normally Open (N/O) or Normally Closed (N/C) terminals as required. NOTE: For ungrounded or isolated control transformer secondary, DO NOT CONNECT Ground terminal on either LINE or EQUIPMENT side. STEP 4: Connect telephone line protection: Assemble RJ-14 modular plugs to "LINE" and "EQUIPMENT" telephone cables. Connect circuits as follows: Circuit 1 = Pins 2 and 3; Circuit 2 = Pins 1 and 4. Insert modular plugs into "LINE" and "EQUIPMENT" modular jacks. Assure that telephone circuits are operational. STEP 5: Apply power to system. Indicator light(s) should glow and alarm contacts should move to normal state. If light(s) do(es) not glow, remove power and contact supplier. 2001 Innovative Technology, Inc., 1--647-TVSS (8877), HSPSP30.P65, (hspsp30.wmf), 3/6/01 Page 2 of 2

If installing on a system other than electrical panel, mount in close proximity to system being protected using necessary means for mounting. NOTE: A CIRCUIT INTERRUPT DEVICE IS STILL REQUIRED WHEN INSTALLING SUPPRESSOR ON A SYSTEM OTHER THAN ELECTRICAL PANEL. Suppressor contains no position-oriented components and can be mounted upside down or sideways. (Cover may be rotated only 180 degrees to improve label readability. Take care to support cover to prevent damage to indicator light circuit board and wiring.) WARNING: Cover will not seal when rotated ONLY 90 degrees. This invalidates NEMA 4 rating and may create safety hazard. STEP 3: Wire suppressor into electrical system: Cut wire(s) as short as possible for optimum suppressor performance. Connect GROUND wire to system ground bus bar. Refer to NOTE for systems utilizing isolated ground. Connect PHASE wire(s) to phase(s) of system (one phase wire to each phase). STEP 4: Apply power to system. Indicator light(s) should glow. If light(s) do(es) not glow, remove power and contact supplier. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AS SECONDARY SURGE ARRESTOR: STEP 1: Follow steps 1 through 4 above, only circuit interrupt device not required. Note: Remove lid to attach optional mounting feet. 2000 Innovative Technology, Inc., 1--647-TVSS (8877), ITRSSi.P65 (r1s-fusd; r1s-splt.wmf;xt40.eps), 5/17/00 Page 2 of 2

Measure the peak DC signal voltage of the telecom/data equipment. 2. Measure the peak AC voltage of the Telecom/data equipment (Vrms x 1.41) 3. Add the values obtained in (1) and (2) to determine peak voltage requirements. 4. Match the peak voltage requirement to the appropriate Bridge Clip. Select the Bridge Clip based on the standoff voltage. For example, equipment with 36 Vdc peak signal voltage and peak AC voltage of 95 V would require a BC-180 (36+95=131). 5. If desired, connect the selected Bridge Clip modules to a 6-unit (I.T. Model BC-GB6) or 25-unit (I.T. Model BC-GB25) Grounding Strip. 2003 Specifications subject to change INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY Page 1 of 1 (BClipDim.eps BClip-Spec.p65 07/09/03 ZM02-390) www.itvss.com -647-8877 352-799-0713
