Section 1 Getting Started with GoTalk NOW Open the User Guide PDF in the ibooks app for full page viewing and text searching. Use GoTalk NOW to create Communication Books with interactive message buttons. Or use an image to create a scene page with screen hotspots that play messages. Use keyboard pages for typing messages with built-in word prediction and text-to-speech message playing. The Help button on the Home screen provides user guide information and video tutorials. The best way to learn about GoTalk NOW is to start creating your own Communication Pages. Use the QUICK START instructions below to learn the basics. Fig. 1-1 A GoTalk Communication Page with four Message Locations. A tap on a Message Location can play audio or video, navigate to a new page, or open a web page. To exit the Page Editor, tap the Home button or use a three-finger downward swipe on the ipad screen. To restrict access to the Page Editor, add a passcode for leaving the Player (see app settings, page 35). 1.1 QUICK START 1. Tap Page Editor on the Home screen. If no books have been created yet, the first page of the Default Book will open. Return to Home Screen Set Page Options Tap to Add Page Icon Tap to Edit Page Title Fig. 1-2 The selected book title appears at the bottom of the Home screen. GoTalk NOW LITE and GoTalk Start do not show a title, as they are limited to a single book. Manage Pages and Templates Add Core Vocabulary Add New Page Fig. 1-3 Use the Page Editor to add Message Locations to the page. A page can be divided into 1, 2, 4, 9, 16, 25, or 36 Message Location buttons. Each button can have a different appearance and action. A Message Location area on the page can be left blank. GoTalk NOW User s Guide 1

Use the Background setting to choose a background color for the page. The Enabled switch must be turned on for the page to be included in the book. 3. Tap on one of the Message Location buttons. Button Text will appear on the selected button as default text for that Message Location. Editing tools will appear on the screen for replacing the text, changing the button appearance, and adding actions. Fig. 1-4 The Page Options tab provides settings for the page background color and the number of Message Locations on the page. Enabled must be set to on for the page to be viewed in the Player. See page 14 to learn about Scanning Auditory Cues. See page 19 to learn about the Express Page feature. Add Button Action Add Auditory Cue Add Button After-Action Edit Button Background Color Save Button Changes Edit Button Border Color Edit Button Text Add Image to Button Fig. 1-5 When selected in the Page Editor, a Message Location button is enlarged for easier editing. Background color, border color, text content, and images can be adjusted. A Message Location must have an Action assigned to it (Text-to-Speech to play the button text is the default action). 4. With the Message Location selected, use the Background and Border tools to select colors for the Message Location. Use the Button Text settings to edit the text label or change the text size, font style, and text color. A drop shadow effect can also be added to the text. Fig. 1-6 The Button Text tab provides settings for making changes to the text label of a Message Location. GoTalk NOW User s Guide 2

Text-to-Speech (TTS) is the default action and will read the text aloud. Recorded Audio lets you use the ipad microphone to record a message. Other available actions include Jump To Page (go to a different Communication Page), Media Player (play audio from the ipad song list), URL (open a web page), Hue Light Control, or Video. Fig. 1-7 The Add Image tab has settings for adding one or more pictures to a Message Location. 7. Press the Done button to save the completed Message Location to the page. See page 14 to learn how to add an Auditory Cue to a Message Location. See page 14 to learn how to add an After Action to a Message Location. 8. Section 3 Using the Page Editor 3.4.6 Auditory Cues for Message Locations Use the Auditory Cue button to add an auditory cue to a Message Location. An auditory cue is played when the Message Location is tapped. The cue may be created with the audio recorder or the Text-to-Speech player. Auditory Cues will be played only if turned on in the main app settings. Auditory Cues added to Message Locations can help with communication for different purposes. Here are some examples: Scanning prompts. An auditory cue can provide a spoken prompt for each Message Location during the scanning process. This is called auditory scanning. Introducing new vocabulary. Some words and concepts are difficult to visually illustrate. An auditory cue can make it easier to understand messages such as please or want or a hard-to-interpret image. Visual impairment. An auditory cue can help a communicator who is blind or visually impaired as they navigate through a Communication Book. Preliminary messages. By adding an auditory cue, a Message Location becomes a two-part action. The first tap plays the auditory cue, and a second tap plays an additional message if it has been added to the Message Location. Fig. 3-36 Tap the Auditory Cue button to create a message to be used as an Auditory Cue for the Message Location. Fig. 3-37 When Auditory Cues is turned on in the app settings, the first tap on a Message Location plays the auditory cue, and the Message Location is highlighted with a green border. If tapped again, the border highlighting turns red, and any actions assigned to the Message Location are activated. 3.4.7 Copy, Paste, Swap, or Remove Message Locations on a Page Once you have created a Message Location, it can be copied to other available button locations on a Communication Page. Tap-hold a Message Location to use the Copy and Paste tools, or to flip two Message Locations with the Swap tool. Message Locations can be removed from a page with the Delete or Disable tools. Fig. 3-38 Tap and hold a Message Location to copy, swap, or remove Message Locations. GoTalk NOW User s Guide 14

Section 3 Using the Page Editor 3.4.7 Copy, Paste, Swap, or Remove Message Locations (continued) Tap-hold to select a Message Location to use the Copy tool. To flip the positions of two Message Locations on the same page, tap Swap with one of the locations selected, and then tap on the other location. The two Message Locations will exchange positions. Use Disable to hide a Message Location on a page instead of permanently deleting it. 3.5 Core Vocabulary The Core Vocabulary feature allows you to add up to four Message Location buttons that will be available from all pages of a Communication Book. Fig. 3-39 Tap the Core Vocabulary button to create Message Locations to be available throughout the Communication Book. 3.6 Manage Pages and Templates Open the Pages button to go to another page, or tap Edit to rearrange or delete pages in the list. Use the Template Gallery to add new pages based on an existing page layout (see page 21 for more about Templates). Fig. 3-40 Tap one of the listed Page Labels to go to that page of the Communication Book. Tap Edit to reorder or remove pages. Fig. 3-41 To delete a page from the Communication Book, tap the red deletion button next to the Page Label. The currently displayed page may not be deleted. Fig. 4-1 A Scene Communication Page uses touchsensitive hotspots to trigger actions. 1. Open the Template Gallery tab with the button and select Add Blank Scene Page. 2. Tap the button in the bottom right corner to set the scene image. Choose an image from the GoTalk Image Library, the ipad Photo Library, or an Internet search. You may also use the ipad camera to take a picture for the page. Only one image can be used for the scene image. 3. Drag or pinch the image to adjust size and position on the page. 4. To lock the image into place on the page, tap the button again, and then tap Lock Image to prevent the image from moving while adding hotspots to the page. Fig. 4-2 Select Add Blank Scene Page from the Template Gallery to create a Scene Communication Page.
