Modern Emission Measuring Technology: Compact Stack Gas Monitoring The MCS 100 E is an extremely compact multi-component infrared photometer for extractive and continuous monitoring of flue gases, for example at power generating plants and waste incineration plants. MCS 100 E monitors flue gas constituents such as HCl, H 2 O, NH 3, SO 2, NO x, CO, CO 2 and O 2. Lean Design for the Optimum Solution The measuring technique utilized in MCS 100 E permits a mechanical design that uses a minimum of components and is at the same time extraordinarily rugged. In addition to this, MCS 100 E provides an excellent price/performance ratio. SICK: Your Expert Partner SICK is there to support you with our many years of experience. Our competent application laboratory and our recognized service team are always ready to offer non-bureaucratic assistance. Modern production techniques and extensive testing of the systems safeguard the high quality of the product. MCS 100 E is: mechanically robust accurate reliable easy to calibrate and requires: minimal maintenance

The All-in-one-housing Stack Gas Analyzer CO 2 O 2 HCI NO x NH3 CO H 2 O SO 2 Low Detection Limits Very low detection limits are achieved by using high radiance optics and a high performance long path cell. High Measuring Accuracy Since MCS 100 E permits the simultaneous measurement of several constituents, interfering components can also be measured and thus compensated. In this way, a particularly high measurement accuracy is achieved. Convenient Standalone Operation with Self-monitoring In the event of a malfunction the instrument is automatically switched to the stand-by mode and the cell is purged free of flue gas. Approval according to the German regulations: TA-Luft, 13th and 17thBImSchV Two approval-tested system versions of MCS 100 E are available: The MCS 100 E HW version applying the hot measurement technique is designed for monitoring HCl, SO 2, CO, NO, NH 3, H 2 O, CO 2 and O 2. With the MCS 100 E PD version including a perme- ation dryer smaller measurement ranges are achieved and, additionally, NO 2 can be measured without the option of H 2 O and NH 3 measurement. These systems are approved in accordance with the German regulations TA-Luft, 13th and 17th BImSchV. Besides this, other IR sensitive components, e.g. methane or nitrous oxide can be determined without any problem. The MCS 100 E, comprising the photometer with the peripherals, LC display and key-board, and the computer, is accommodated in a single instrument cabinet. The interfaces to the peripherals are opto-decoupled and thus absolutely interference-proof. MCS 100 E can be mounted in system cabinets, in 19 - racks, or simply on a mounting panel. MCS 100 E is designed for stand-alone continuous operation with low maintenance requirements and contains all control units and self-check functions required for automatic operation. As a special feature the zero setting and calibration are performed automatically. As an option, calibration cells can be used to check the instrument sensitivity without applying cylinder gases. MCS 100 E

System Design and Mode of Operation: High Efficiency in Little Space MCS 100 E consists of photometer, cell, flowmeter and electronics, incorporated in one 19 sheet steel instrument housing. A ZrO 2 oxygen probe can be integrated as an option. All instrument components in contact with the sample gas are heated. The Photometer: High Energy, Many Components, Optional Calibration Cells Filter Wheel 2 Calibration Unit Power Supply Filter Wheel 1 Computer Electronics The instrument incorporates a single beam infrared photometer which permits the simultaneous application of the dual wavelength and the gas filter correlation techniques. An infrared radiation source is used which features both high energy emission and long lifetime. Using a combination of mirrors, the radiation is reflected through a chopper into the cell. Upon exit from the cell the radiation passes two filter wheels with the respective interferences and gas filters and enters the pyroelectric detector. An optional calibration cell unit permits automatic calibration without applying cylinder gas. Blower Optical Interfaces Mirrors

Display Keyboard Detector Beam Source Chopper Wheel Flowmeter ZrO 2 Probe Long Path Cell Filter Sample Gas Inlet Sample Gas Outlet The Cell: Long Optical Pathlength, Small Volume, Two Temperature Ranges The long path cell is available with preset optical pathlengths of 3 m and 6 m, which are obtained by integrated mirrors at the ends of the cell. The cell is optimized for small volumes and rapid gas flows. A protective filter is located at the gas inlet. The cell is adjustable to temperature up 200 C. The temperature is controlled automatically. Integrated Flowmeter The flowmeter is an integral part at the cell outlet. It functions on the basis of the thermal flow measurement principle. The flowmeter monitors the sample gas flow, thus enabling any faults in the gas sampling process to be detected at a very early stage. An alarm is generated if the flow rate drops below the set limit value.

Computer, Operation and Interfaces: Functionality at the Highest Level MCS 100 E comprises an integrated system control unit, based on an industrystandard PC with a user interface that is especially tailored to meet the requirements of industrial measurement techniques and with particularly interference-proof interfaces. Integrated Data Acquisition System The integrated computer with DOS user interface is IBMcompatible. A silicon disc with no moving parts is used for mass storage. The computer controls the measurement sequence, calculates measurement values, monitors limit values, and generates the results, warnings and alarms on the display and the interfaces. The illuminated LC display and the membrane keyboard protected against spray water are located at the front of the instrument. An external keyboard can easily be attached to the connector at the front. Easy-to-use Software: Two Operating Levels and Password Protection The MCS 100 E meets the requirements for operation of modern measuring systems. The software is easy to use, utilizing the cursor and function keys for menu selection. Two operating levels are available for the measurement mode and password protected for changing the configuration. Display of Measurement Values and Data Storage Together with the status reports, all measured values are displayed numerically, graphically, or as a concentration curve on the LC display. It is possible to retrace the graphical display as well as the status reports via the integrated mass storage unit. Via Fiber-Optics to the Peripherals: Versatile and Absolutely Interference-Proof Data output is via 2 optical interfaces and interconnected fiber-optics. The PC and printer can be connected to the fiber-optics as well as I/O module boxes forming the interfaces to the process. External signals can also be read in. The concept of fiberoptics allows flexibility in the system assembly and provides the highest possible safety against electromagnetic interferences. Mercury Dust etc. T Graphical Display MCS 100 E in Process

Accessories and System Technique: From Measuring Instrument to Monitoring System Integrated Oxygen Monitoring with High Stability and Long Lifetime Oxygen measurement can be integrated in the MCS 100 E as an option. For this purpose a proportion of the flue gas enters a bypass at the cell outlet and is conducted to a ZrO 2 probe. Ambient air is used as the reference gas. The electrical signal is evaluated in the computer. The advantages of the ZrO 2 probe are: High stability and long lifetime. Interference-proof I/O Module Boxes: Interface to the Process The I/O module boxes, which are attachable to the fiber optics, contain 0/4-20 ma analog outputs, if required with automatic measuring range selection, as well as status signals. Via these module boxes digital and analog values from external analyzers, e.g. THC, dust, gas velocity, etc. can also be read in and processed. Data evaluation is performed in the MCS 100 E, the results being transmitted to external data acquisition systems via the fiber optics. In addition, temperature control boards can be inserted into the I/O module boxes, e.g. to control the sample gas temperature. Barometrical Correction A further optional board can be mounted in the I/O module box for correction of the measuring results with respect to ambient pressure variations. MCS 100 E as Emission Monitoring System Usually, MCS 100 E is operated either as a MCS 100 E HW, MCS 100 E PD or as a MCS 100 E CD version. With MCS 100 E HW all components in contact with the sample gas are heated. This system is mainly used for the analysis of HCl, H 2 O, NH 3, SO 2, NO x, CO, CO 2 and O 2. MCS 100 E PD is operated downstream of a permeation dryer. Smaller measurement ranges and, additionally, NO 2 measurement are achieved. In this case, there is no measurement of H 2 O and NH 3. The MCS 100 E CD system is operated in combination with a gas cooler and allows to measure the components SO 2, NO x, CO, CO 2, NO 2 and O 2. This system version is a standard solution for many kinds of applications. Normally, the sample gas is conducted to the photometer cell via a heated sampling system, a heated sample gas line, a sample gas pump and - if required - a permeation dryer resp. a gas cooler. For backpurging of the probe and automatic zero and span gas sampling provide a valve block, if necessary.
