This course will introduce the user the Windows 7 Operating System by covering the desktop, start button, task bar and the Computer section previously known as My Computer. The user will be introduced to the Gadget feature and understand how to stack the open windows to make comparing data faster and easier.

The Start Button provides access to Software Applications, Windows Settings, Help, and Power Options. Network Storage Frequently Used Programs Computer Settings Help & Support Installed Software Search Box Power Options Hover the mouse pointer over the All Programs link and a list of all the programs installed on the computer will appear. Click once on the icon to access the program. Notice some of the icons appear as a folder. Click once on the folder to open and view the contents. Once the folder is open, click on the icons within to access the software.
Computer Previously known as My Computer, this section provides access to your storage areas: Folders, Disk Drives, CD Drives, Digital Cameras, Flash Drives, and Network Drives. Switch User Grants access to another user logging in over top of current user. Log Off When you are finished using the machine during the day. Lock When you want to continue working, but need to step away. Restart Brief shutdown of machined followed by a power up. Sleep Saves your work and minimizes power consumption.
Right click on your desktop and a pop-up menu will appear. Click on Gadgets A window will appear with several different gadgets. Gadgets are small programs that stick to your desktop that provide helpful information to users. Left-click and drag the weather gadget icon to your desktop. * Many Gadgets provided by online resources can infect your computer with Viruses Use Caution when downloading *
The gadget will be placed onto your desktop. Notice that the city location is incorrect for our area. Click once on the wrench to access settings. The settings window will appear. Notice the Current location is incorrect. Type in the city of preference and click on the magnifying glass to search. A list of possible cities will appear. Click on the proper city from the list. Identify the temperature measurement of your choice. Click on OK. The proper City will appear within the gadget located on your desktop.
Click once on the located within the Task Bar to access Internet Explorer. Search Bar key in URL addresses to access websites. Tabs Ability to open multiple websites at once. Notice how the window appears to be missing some common toolbars. Right- Click within the blue bar at the top and a pop-up menu will appear. Left-click once next to the following to provide a check mark. Menu Bar Favorites Bar Command Bar Status Bar
Internet Explorer will automatically open the Library homepage. Click on the New Tab button to open a second website within the same window. The new tab will appear allowing you to multitask between two open websites. As you begin navigating the Internet, the new tabs will open and provide you with the sites you frequently visit. This is a time saver for users rather than keying in websites or accessing them from their Favorites. When you have Internet Explorer minimized, and want to navigate back to it, hover the mouse over the icon in the Task Bar Left-click on the snapshot of your choice to open the webpage in the Active Window. All of the open windows or tabs will appear. Hover your mouse over the snapshot of your choice and the Active Window will change to that webpage. Navigate the mouse between the two and watch the Active Window Change.
Helpful Hints Side-By-Side Windows Option 1 Multiple programs can be open at once within Windows 7. The program you are currently working on is known as the Active Window (it is getting your attention). Restore down your Active window so that it makes the window smaller. Left-click, hold and drag the Title Bar of the Active Window to the right or left side of the monitor. As your mouse reaches the edge, the Window will fill that half of the screen. Restore down a different window so that it makes the window smaller. Left-click, hold and drage the Title Bar of that Active Window to the opposite side of the monitor. This allows you to work side-by-side and be more productive. Option 2 Right Click the Task Bar and left click on Show Windows Side By Side The current windows that you have open are forced into Side-By-Side format. Option 3 When an Active Window is open in a small view setting Click and hold the Windows key on the keyboard and press a left or right directional arrow The window fills half of the screen in the direction you selected. Stacked Windows Right Click the Task Bar and left click on Show Windows Stacked The current windows that you have open are forced to appear one on top of the other. Full Screen Windows Option 1 Within the Active Window, Click on the Maximize button Option 2 Left-click, hold and drag the Title Bar of the Active Window to the top of the monitor. As your mouse reaches the edge, the Window will fill the screen. Option 3 Double click the Title Bar of the Active Window - The Active Window will automatically fill the screen Minimizing Un-Needed Windows Option 1 Click on each inactive window to make it become the Active Window. Left-Click on the minimize button to dock the window to the Status Bar. Repeat for each window you want minimized. Option 2 When multiple windows are open in a small view setting Left-click, hold and drag the Title Bar of the Active Window to either side of the screen and give it a shake The inactive windows will automatically minimize to the Status Bar. Force the Size and Placement of Windows When an Active Window is open in a small view setting Hover the mouse over each of the four corners until you see a multidirection mouse pointer. Click and drag to resize the window via each of the four corners. Once you have the desired size and placement of the window, close it by clicking the Red X. The next time you open that program, it will open to that size and screen placement.
Changing your desktop (aka Wallpaper) Right Click on the desktop and left click on Personalize From the Window that opens, click on the following icon Click on the Browse button Navigate to the stored location of the photo you wish to select (you must open the folder the image is contained in) Click on OK to choose that folder
All of the photos within that folder will appear and will automatically be checked. Shuffle: checking this box gives permission to shuffle between all items within the folder Change picture every: determines how long each image will appear before rotating Picture Position changes how the image fits on the monitor Once you have all your settings selected, click on Save Changes Changing your Screen Saver Right Click on the desktop and left click on Personalize From the Window that opens, click on the following icon Select the style of Screen Saver you wish to apply Click on the Preview button to see how the screen saver will look in full format Click on the OK button to Save the settings
Burning DVD s Open the Computer (previously known as My Computer) Locate the folder(s) or file(s) you want to burn to a DVD and right click on them From the pop-up menu, hover over Send To and then select the DVD RW Drive (D:) The following window will appear and the DVD drive will automatically open and wait for you to enter a DVD. Once you have placed a DVD into the drive, gently push it closed. Wait for a second for the disc to be read by the computer. Type in the name of the disc Select the type of disc you want to create Click on Next The disc begins formatting this is a precaution procedure to verify that the disc is clean, usable and ready to accept data from the computer.
Once formatting is complete, the disc is ready to be written to. Click on the Open folder to View Files link Windows Explorer will open and display the D: drive with the name of the disc The D: drive is now ready to accept data
Navigate to the storage location that you are copying information from Single left-click on the folder to copy and drag it on top of the DVD RW Drive (D:) Notice when you do, a ghost folder appears with a pop up stating + Copy to DVD RW Drive (D:) Let go of the left-click and the data will begin burning to the DVD drive
Once burning is complete, you will see the folder listed under the DVD RW Drive (D:)
Attaching a Document via your Email Compose your Email as you normally would Click on the Attach a file link You have 3 spots to select the file location: It is your preference as to which spot you utilize to access your files. Navigate out the desired path where the folder is located, select the name of the file, and click on Open
Opening Email Attachments Attachments will appear at the bottom of the email message Click on the word Download A pop up box will appear along the bottom of the message Click on Open to view and verify the contents Within Word, Power Point and Excel - the document opens but you are unable to click within the document and edit the contents. This fuction is prevented because the document is open in a viewing format only Click on the Enable Editing button at the top of the window in order to edit the contents of the document.
