1 1 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Introduction WatchManager SQL is the latest version in a line of Control Room Software that has evolved alongside the industry for some 20 years. This release embodies improvements that are Industry driven, but the biggest change from earlier versions is influenced by developments in IT Technology in recent years, viz. the incorporation of a SQL Database. To enjoy a smooth and trouble free experience with WatchManager SQL, please read each section of this guide carefully before rushing into the installation process. Thank you for your time and your interest. 2 Before you begin Before you start installing WatchManager SQL, please read the following important information: Upgrading from a prior version (Licensing) If you are planning to upgrade from an earlier version of WatchManager, your system will have to be re-licensed to operate correctly. IMPORTANT: Do not simply install the SQL Version on your live monitoring computer without coordinating the re-licensing of your system with your supplier first. Upgrade eligibility If you are running an earlier version of WatchManager, the table below details your upgrade status and requirements: 1. Clients subscribing to our RMS Support Service receive this upgrade free of charge as part of their paid-up RMS Service. 2. If you are not an RMS Subscriber BUT you purchased a new WatchManager or purchased an "Upgrade to the Latest Version" after 1st January 2010, you are entitled to a free upgrade to the SQL Version. 3. If you are not an RMS Subscriber BUT you purchased a new WatchManager 7.50 or purchased an "Upgrade to the Latest Version for version 7.50 " before 1st January 2010, you can get an upgrade to the SQL Version by re-purchasing an "Upgrade to Latest Version" or by subscribing to the WatchManager RMS Service. 4. Clients still running on the DOS Version (Version 7.49 and before) will have to purchase a new license to use the WatchManager SQL Version. Computer Hardware Please ensure that your computer hardware is adequate. Please read our "PC Recommendations" for more information

Before you begin 2 Supported Operating Systems WatchManager SQL is supported on the following versions of Windows: - Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 - Windows XP Service Pack 3 - Windows 7 Professional (x32/x64) - Windows Server 2003 - Windows Server 2008 (x32/x64) Logged in as Administrator To install WatchManager, you must be logged on to your computer as an Administrator. Configure Windows before Installing Please read and follow the instructions in the next section. Windows 2008 Server When installing under Windows 2008 Server, please read the section that describes manual Security settings further down in this guide. Anti Virus Software If you have Anti Virus software installed (which is a good idea), ensure that you configure this software so that it does not impact on WatchManager performance.

3 3 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Configure your Computer If this is the first time that you are installing WatchManager 7.60 SQL, there are a few adjustments to made to the settings on your Computer. Please ensure that these settings are done before attempting to install WatchManager SQL. At the end of each section of the settings, there is an "Applies to:" item which lists the version of Windows the particular setting will apply. Please check this for your Windows version and apply the setting as indicated. 3.1 Fixed IP Address If you plan to run WatchManager SQL in a networked setup, your Server Computer (Main PC) must be configured with a fixed IP Address under Network Settings in Windows. WatchManager workstations access the SQL Database Server using this IP Address and if you restart your Server for any reason, the IP Address may change and then your Workstations will no longer operate correctly. IP Address recommendations: 192.168.0.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Configure your Computer As an alternative, you can set the IP Address to: 10.0.0.x with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Applies to: All versions of Window Operating System 4

5 3.2 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Indexing Services Turning off Indexing Services Turning off Indexing Services will offer a small improvement to overall system performance. Click on START and then choose My Computer. Locate the Local Disk C: and RIGHT CLICK on this. From the menu, choose PROPERTIES. On the Properties Screen, at the bottom, there is a CHECKBOX with a reference to "ALLOW FILES TO BE INDEXED" The wording varies between different version of Windows. UNCHECK this option and click OK If you see an error message popup, simply click on IGNORE ALL Applies to: All versions of Window Operating System

Configure your Computer 3.3 6 System Restore Windows XP/Windows 7 is equipped with a function called System Restore or System Protection as it's called in Windows 7 What System Restore does is it keeps track of important information on your system and if for any reason your system seems unstable, you can select the System Restore and set your PC's configuration back to a known point in time where everything was stable. In theory, and in most cases this is not a bad thing. In reality, what happens is that your system runs a lot slower than it could, and some programs (including WatchManager) respond a lot slower. The solution is turn off System Restore/System protection. Turning off System Restore Click on START and then RIGHT CLICK on My Computer. Choose PROPERTIES. Windows XP On the Properties Screen, choose System Restore and then click Turn off System Restore then click OK Windows 7 On the Properties Screen, choose System Protection and then click Configure. On the next screen, click Turn off System Protection then click OK

7 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide

Configure your Computer Applies to: Windows XP Windows 7 8

9 3.4 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide User Access Control (UAC) User Access Control (UAC) is a security measure in certain versions of Windows which pops up messages whenever programs are installed or changes are made to the system. While it sounds good in theory, in reality, you spend a large portion of your time clicking on the "Allow" button when trying to do some actual work. Turning off UAC Click on START then choose CONTROL PANEL. On the Control Panel screen, top right hand side, change the "View By" option and make sure that you view by Large or Small ICONS. Once the Control Panel Screen is in ICONS View, click on USER ACCOUNTS. On the User Accounts screen, click on "Change User Account Control Settings"

Configure your Computer 10

11 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide In the User Account Control Settings screen, move the slider all the way to the bottom and then click OK. You will be prompted to accept the changes. Accept the changes. You will have to restart you computer for the changes to take effect. Applies to: Windows 7 Windows 2008 Server

Configure your Computer 3.5 12 Password Protected Sharing When running WatchManager in a network setup, the workstations need to have access to the shared WatchManager folder on your Server. The workstations need this access so that automatic software updates can be performed. When installing WatchManager on your Server, this folder is automatically shared on the network but under certain versions of Windows, the workstations cannot access this folder event though it is shared. The reason for this is because PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING is turned on. To turn off password protected sharing, click START, then choose CONTROL PANEL. Once in the Control Panel, access the Network and Sharing Centre Under advanced settings, scroll down to the item PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING and click " Turn off password protected sharing"

13 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Click on SAVE CHANGES Applies to: Windows 7 Windows 2003 Server Windows 2008 Server

Configure your Computer 3.6 14 Windows Firewall WatchManager consists of a number of different program components, each designed to perform specific functions in the monitoring operation. When these programs startup for the first time and the Windows Firewall is enabled, you will see a Firewall Security warning screen: Make sure you check ALL network options and then click ALLOW ACCESS Applies to: Windows XP Windows 7 Windows 2003 Server Windows 2008 Server

15 4 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Windows 2008 Server Windows 2008 Server has a bug in it that prevents the WatchManager Installer from setting the correct Folder permission settings for the PostgreSQL Database Server. As a result, you are required to set the Folder permissions manually during the installation process. During the installation process on Windows 2008 Server, you will see the following notice appear: When you have completed the steps outlined below, click on the "Folder permission have been set" box and then click CONTINUE Set Folder permissions - Right CLICK on the START Button - Choose Open Windows Explorer

Windows 2008 Server Once the Folder Properties windows is open, click the EDIT option as shown below: 16

17 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide On the folder permissions window, select user postgres and make sure that ALLOW Full Control is checked as shown below Then Click OK When you have completed the steps outlined above, click on the "Folder permission have been set" box and then click CONTINUE

Windows 2008 Server 5 18 IMPORTANT: Anti Virus Software In this modern day and age, it's a good idea to have some form of Anti Virus software installed on all your computers. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer advice on which Anti Virus software to use but we can tell you that experience has shown us that some Anti Virus programs can have a detrimental affect on the performance of your computer AND WatchManager, if the software is not configured correctly. If you experience random "problems", this is could be caused by a feature called "real time protection". Basically, most Anti Virus programs are designed to automatically scan any file that is accessed on your computer. This is not a bad thing but it can affect the stability of the WatchManager programs and the overall performance of you computer. If your Anti Virus program has a "realtime" scanning option (most do), you MUST adjust the settings in your Anti Virus program to EXCLUDE (Exclusions)the following Folders on you Computer: 1. C:\PostgresData - SQL data folder 2. C:\WmWinSQL - WatchManager program folder Please do not overlook this aspect of configuring your computer.

19 6 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide New Installation Locate the installer file that has been downloaded. It should look something like this: Wm760.065(sql).exe Run it by "double clicking" this file. When you launch the installer, you should see the following screen: Once you see this display, proceed with the installation by click on the NEXT option. Accept the License and Terms of Use, click NEXT and then to start the install process, click NEXT. The extract program will then copy all the installation files to the required folder on your PC and will then automatically launch the WatchManager Installer Wizard.

New Installation 20 Choose your Installation type When the WatchManager Installer Wizard has started, you should see the following screen: If you are setting up a Single User Computer, choose the "Single User/Network Server" option. When installing a Networked system, you must install WatchManager SQL on your Main PC (Server) first. In this case, you will choose this option as well. In a Networked system, you will have installed the software on your Server first and once you have done this, you will then install on your Workstations (Slave PC's) When installing the software on your Workstations, choose "Network Station" Continue the configuration process, click the NEXT option

21 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide The Installation Process During the install and configuration process, there is nothing for you to do except wait patiently for the process to complete. You should see a number of different screens popup and disappear and one or two of these screens may appear to "freeze" or display an "unresponsive" message. This is normal and you should not take any action or press any keys on the keyboard. What is the installer actually doing: - Copying program files to correct locations - Installs the PostgreSQL Database Server - Install Postgres ODBC Driver Depending on the speed of your PC and the volume of your old data, this may take a few minutes. Please be patient during this process

Upgrade Installation 24 Upgrade existing Data If you are upgrading an existing installation, the Installer will detect your previous version and offer to upgrade your data into the new version. The WatchManager SQL will not alter your old installation in anyway, it merely copies your data into a new installation folder and your prior version is left untouched. If you wish, you can still run your older version after this installation process. Click the "Upgrade old version data" option then click NEXT. The installation and configuration will proceed automatically.

29 8.1 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Manually specify SQL Server When you install WatchManager in networked setup, the workstation installer will attempt to find an installed SQL Server. If it succeeds, there is nothing else for you to do. If it fails to find a SQL Server, you can manually "tell it" where to find the SQL Server by accessing this option When manually setting up a SQL Server, you need to fill in the NAME as well as the IP Address of the Computer where it is installed.

Install Network Workstation 9 30 Import earlier History When you install version 7.60 SQL, only your main data records plus the current week of history is converted. To import earlier history data than the current week, we have provided a utility to easily do this for you. A word of caution: While your SQL Server is designed to handle large volumes of data, use this import function with some forethought. Do not just simply import the last years worth of history. Depending on your hardware, the impact of this much data may (we do say may) affect the performance of you system. Having said this, in one of our earliest test sites, we imported 5,8 million history entries into the SQL database with no apparent impact on the system, but this system is running on dual Xeon processors. PLEASE NOTE: You can run the History Import function while your system is running normally. However, during the import process, your system may respond a little slower than normal. To activate the history import facility, select the WatchManager Control Centre:

31 WatchManager SQL Installation Guide Selecting this option will launch the Import History utility. You should see this window on your screen: When selecting the version you wish to import from, you will see a list of available files to select.

Import earlier History 32 Use the TAG FILE option or simply DOUBLE CLICK to select a file for import. Once you are happy with your selection, click IMPORT to start the import process. Please be patient during this process, it may take some time depending on the number of entries in each selected file. SPECIAL NOTE: The import program keeps track of files that you have imported. Once you have imported a specific week, it will not be available to be imported again.
