2. Installation Notes and Compatibility 2.1 Read this if you are upgrading from a prior version! utilities listed in the table below must be uninstalled prior to upgrading to Foundation v3.4x. Utility versions prior to those listed below are not compatible with Server v3.4x and may not function properly after you upgrade to Server v3.4x. After installation of Server v3.40, you may upgrade to the latest utilities. The versions listed below are compatible with Server v3.40. Utility Updated Version (Compatible with v3.40) Scan-to-Connect 3.41.01.0189 Remote Display 3.42.01.0103 Bundle Tool 3.40.03.0655 New versions can be found using the following link: http://home.intermec.com/eprise/main/gss/service/content/downloads/show_downloadsea rchresults?downloadtype=all&product=smartsystems If you miss this step of the upgrade process and find that your utilities do not function properly, upgrade to the latest version of the utility. Do not uninstall the utility or the Server prior to the upgrade. Intermec Technologies 3 10/29/2008

2.2 System Requirements for installing the Server: Processor: Pentium 4 Compatible or higher Minimum: 600 MHz, Recommended: 1GHz Memory / RAM: 512 MB (1 GB recommended) Disk Space: 110 MB Required for Server Additional space required for pre-requisite software. Operating System: Other Requirements: Windows XP Pro with SP2 or SP3 and all related updates Windows Server 2003 R2 Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 * Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 * Microsoft SQL Server * (SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, SQL Server 2005) Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or later Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 or later (Required for ActiveSync Monitor) * If not detected, automatically installed from internet. If installing on a PC that does not have internet access, download and install prior to installing Server (See Link below) 2.3 Before Installing Make sure you have an internet connection. Installation will attempt to install required software from the internet connection. (.NET 3.0 as an example) Ensure that you have administrator rights on your computer. Administrator rights are required to install Server. If operating in an Active Directory environment, your system administrator may have set network policies or restrictions that prevent products like Server from installing successfully. Verify with your System Administrator that your account has the appropriate administrative permissions to: create local user accounts that can be added to the Administrators Group, create local groups, and that the security policies (aka Group Policy Objects or GPOs) allow a user to log on as a service. For occasional use, Server may be installed on an administrator s desktop/laptop aside other applications. For optimal operation in a production environment, install Server on a dedicated machine connected to a DHCP network. Do not install Server on a machine that is used as a Domain Controller. Do not install Server on a compressed drive. Uninstall any Beta, CTP or Tech Preview versions of Microsoft products. When upgrading from a prior version of Server, contents of the Software Vault (back-up settings, software bundles) will be preserved. When initially installing Server, you have the option to connect to an existing SQL Server database. Existing SQL Server databases must be installed on the same server as Server. When upgrading from a prior version, the database connection used by the prior version will continue to be used. Intermec Technologies 4 10/29/2008

If your machine does not have internet access, Microsoft SQL Server and.net Framework must be installed prior to installing Server. You may obtain a download containing both the.net Framework and a copy of SQL Server 2005 Express (this install does not include.net 3.0, which is also a requirement of 3.40) at: http://webapps.intermec.com/efulfillment/softwarelistform.aspx?softwareid=2419 The SQL Server installation process authenticates your user account. If your user account is a network account, you must be logged into the network in order for authentication to occur. If the user account cannot be authenticated because you are not connected (or on a VPN connection), the database will not be created. Server uses the following ports: Port UDP 49111 TCP 62241 TCP1758-1768 UDP 8792 UDP 8791 TCP 8789 UDP 161 UDP 162 Description required for discovery if device is not associated with a known server required for communication between server and associated devices required for multicast communications used with AutoDeploy feature Upgrade Monitor Online Status Upgrade Progress HTTP SNMP Trap Port To Install: Download and run the installation file (FoundationInstall.exe). Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Licensing: No license is required to use the basic features included in Server. A AutoDeploy license is required to activate advanced functionality. An AutoDeploy license activates features which make it easier to manage groups of devices: Deploy or Upgrade a group of Intermec devices all at once to save significant time. Tests showed that it required over an hour to upgrade the OS and SSPB on 10 Intermec computers using SD cards. That same activity was completed in less than 10 minutes using AutoDeploy. Automatically deploy a standard configuration to a device upon connection to the Server (this feature only supported on device with a minimum client of 3.0). Licenses are available for purchase through your Intermec representative. Intermec Technologies 5 10/29/2008

AutoDeploy licenses are sold in groups of 15, 50 or 200 licenses. A group of licenses is for use with one Server. (I.e. a 50-count device license cannot be split between multiple Servers.) To determine if a pre-existing AutoDeploy license is valid for use with Server v3.40: Go to the Menu on the Console and select -> License Summary Review the Maintenance Expiration date or the Maintenance Status column for the ss.autodeploy license. If the Maintenance Expiration date is later than 9/30/2008, AutoDeploy features are still active no additional license is required. If the maintenance expiration date is prior to 9/30/2008, your license is not valid for use with version 3.40. You must obtain a new license or renew your maintenance plan. For additional assistance, contact Intermec Support (http://intermec.custhelp.com ) 2.4. Best Practices for Device Discovery Device Discovery allows the Server to automatically find and connect to devices attached to the local network (See Note 1 below). By default, device discovery is manually initiated when the user presses the Discover button on the Console. It is often helpful to have the server periodically initiate device discovery on its own so that the administrator doesn t need to press the discover button when new devices are added to the network. To allow the server to initiate device discovery, set the Broadcast Interval timer: Right click on the Core Messaging Server (SS_Comm_Srvr) icon displayed in the Services portion of the console. Select Intermec Settings Determine how often you want the server to initiate device discovery (in minutes) and set the Broadcast Interval to this period of time. For example, a value of 5 broadcasts a discovery message every 5 minutes. A value of 0 disables the broadcast timer so that discovery occurs only when the Discover button is pressed. Using the Broadcast Interval feature is also helpful when working with a large number of devices because it can reduce network traffic associated with device discovery. Pressing the Discover button causes all devices to identify themselves to the server. When using the Broadcast Interval to initiate periodic device discovery, only devices which aren t registered with the server will identify themselves. Note 1: As with any networked device, devices outside the local network will require some configuration before they can be connected to the Server. Scanto-Connect Utility can assist with initial configuration of a device s network settings. See the User s Guide for more information. Intermec Technologies 6 10/29/2008

Clean Boot Allows Console user to remotely clean boot the mobile computer Synchronize devices Date/Time with Server The date/time on devices with a clock can be synchronized with the date/time on the Server. This feature is enabled by default. To disable this feature, right-click on the Core Messaging Server (SS_Comm_Srvr) and select Intermec Settings -> Time Synchronization Delta. Synchronization respects device time zone settings so that devices located in a different time zone will be set to the correct local time. Only available for devices with a minimum Client of v3.40. Updated Asset Viewer The Asset Viewer provides a list of all the devices which have been registered with the Server. Right-click on System Monitor Service (SS_SYSTEM_MNTR), then select Asset Viewer. Intermec Technologies 9 10/29/2008

Automated Updates of Extended Ephemeris Data for the CN3 integrated GPS Receiver The CN3 integrated GPS receiver uses extended ephemeris(ee) data to improve time to first fix (TTFF) in areas with weak satellite signals. The EE data must be updated at least once a week in order to maintain access to the latest satellite information. Client v3.30 added a feature that provides automated over-the-air updates for CN3 computers to eliminate administrator or user effort in obtaining EE updates. Over the air updates are configured by entering Intermec Settings to edit the CN3 GPS settings. If your CN3 does not have wireless internet access, you can also use Server v3.40 to keep EE data up-to-date. To configure the server to update EE data, right-click on System Monitor Service, then select Intermec Settings. Download Interval The interval, in days, that the computer will attempt to download the Extended Ephemeris file from the web. Push Interval The interval, in days, that the Server will attempt to push the Extended Ephemeris file to the GPS enabled computers. Copy Backup settings Right-Click on back-up settings in the software vault and select copy backup settings to create a copy. This is helpful if you want to save a copy of a backup before modifying it, or it you need to create slightly different configurations for different groups of computers. Vista Support should operate on the Vista platform if SQL Express for Vista is installed prior to installing Foundation. Note: Windows Mobile Device Center support under Vista may not function properly after installing. This issue is currently being researched. The current version of the Tray Icon application requires elevation to start. You must right click and run as administrator. Until Intermec releases the next blockpoint of Server. Vista support will be supported as a beta installation. Technical Paper describing how to use DHCP to configure Intermec devices Go to the following link to get additional information on using the vendor options of your DHCP Server to configure Intermec devices. http://epsfiles.intermec.com/scm_files/scm_kits/smartsystems/dhcp Startup_WhitePaper.pdf 5. Some of the early snap-on adaptors, docks and batteries may be programmed incorrectly and show up as Unknown or not at all in the Asset Viewer under Peripherals. 15525 Asset Viewer - Asset Search window does not have scroll bars when resized 15563 Check for SW Updates - Error if not installed in default install directory 15548 License Manager - Msgs logged in the event viewer that erroneously state the license subsystem is not installed on devices 15544 Installation - Upgrade did not preserve the Switch to Manual Startup option. Workaround Select tray icon Services Switch to manual Startup. Server should not be installed to compressed drive. This is an SQL limitation and since the current location of the databases is the folder, a compressed drive should not be used. 15320 If network adaptor IP address is changed on the server, it may require a restart of services to discover. i.e., if my adaptor is 10.10.10.1, and then I move the server to a network of 136.179.x.x, a restart of the services will need to be done to discover devices. 15301 Installing to a very long path name may result in the License Manager to fail. It is best practice to accept the default location. If a non-default location is needed, try to keep the path to a minimum.
