Introduction T he Windows Mobile Device Center can be used to synchronize your Windows PC with your Portable Scanner. Connecting the Portable Scanner Unpack the Portable Scanner If you purchased a serial portable, plug the serial cable to your serial port. If you purchased a USB portable, plug the USB cable to your PC. Plug the Portable into the Dock. NOTE THAT YOU MUST KEEP THE PORTABLE PLUGGED IN AT ALL TIMES WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING IT. Make sure the Portable is Fully Charged before you use it. Installing Windows Mobile Device Center from the AGKSoft CD Insert your AGKSoft CD into your CD Drive. The CD should automatically run. Select OTHER FUNCTIONS and then Install Device Center. If the CD does not auto-run, you can find the Installation software inside the ActiveSync folder. For windows XP or earlier, open the ActiveSync45.msi application, For 32-bits Windows 7 or Vista: Select VistaDeviceCenter61.exe and for 64-bits, select VistaDeviceCenter61_64bit.exe. If you get an error during Installation, Turn off UAC, Remove/Disable all Security Software, Right click on the installer and select [Run as administrator]. Installing Windows Mobile Device Center from AGKSoft Run AGKSoft and login. Click on the Portable Screen and click on Setup. Click Download Device Center and follow the on screen instructions. On Windows 8, open Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, Turn Windows Features on or off, make sure [.NET Framework 3.5] is checked. If you upgraded your PC from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10, open Control Panel, Uninstall a Program and remove Windows Mobil Device Center Driver Update and Windows Mobil Device Center. 1

Setting up Windows Mobile Device Center to work with your Portable Windows 7 - Click Start, All Program, Windows Mobile Device Center. Windows 8 or 10 Click Start and type Windows Mobile Device Center. Click Mobile Device Settings and then Connection Settings. Make sure Allow USB connections is checked. If you are using a Serial Portable, make sure Allow connections to one of the following: is checked and make sure you select the appropriate COM port from the drop down box. By default, it is set to Bluetooth, make sure you click it and change it. You should now click on Set up your Device ; once prompted What kind of items do would want to Sync, make sure to un-select all checkboxes except Files and click Next. You will now be prompted to enter a device name, there will be one there by default, but you can change it if you like. For the question How would you like to synchronize data for the first time? Where the portable in the beginning is empty selecting either of the options is okay. Click Setup when finished and the handheld will synchronize with the desktop computer. Setting up Windows Device Center to work with your Portable Scanner You should now see a dialog box titled (New Partnership) you will be asked if you would like to setup a new partnership? Select YES and press the Next button twice. Now select Yes, I want to synchronize with only this computer and press Next. When prompted to Select Synchronization Settings uncheck all check boxes and only check the Files check box pressing OK to the message that displays. Configuring the AGKSoft Software Run AGKSoft and Login. Start the Portable Data Collector interface (Shift-F12) and click the Setup button. If the Inventory program is not installed on your Portable, can click Download Portable Software. Under the Model group, select your Portable from the list and click Save. 2

Installing AGKSoft Inventory on your Portable The Inventory program may already be installed on your portable. To check, turn your portable on, click Start and look for AGKSoft Inventory, if you don t find it, select Programs and look for Inventory. If the Inventory program is not installed, do the following: 1. Insert the AGKSoft CD in your CD drive. 2. The CD should automatically run. Select OTHER FUNCTIONS and then Install PPT27xx/28xx or PPT88xx Software depending on your model. 3. If the CD does not auto-run, you can find the PPT27xx/PPT28xx software inside the ActiveSync\Inventory folder. You can also find the PPT88xx software inside the ActiveSync\AGKSoftInv folder. Installing AGKSoft Inventory Alternative 1. Open AGKSoft and login. 2. Click on the Portable Screen (Shift-F12) and click on Setup. 3. Click on Download Portable Software and follow the on screen instructions. Running the Inventory program Remove the portable from the base and turn it on by pressing the RED button. Make sure the Portable is Fully Charged before you use it. Click Start, select AGKSoft Inventory. If you do not see it, look for Inventory under Programs. 3

AGKSoft Inventory User Interface UPC is the UPC-Code or PLU #. < > is used to go back and forth between various UPC-Codes that you scanned. Desc is the name of the product (Description). R is used to display the # of Records (UPC-Codes and PLUs) loaded into the portable from the Back Office. Quantity is the # of items you just bought if you are scanning an Invoice or this is how many you have in your store if you are doing Inventory. Selling is the item s selling price. Buying is the item s buying (Cost) price. Dept. is the item s department #. Group is the item s price group. OK is the button you press after you scan an item & enter the Quantity. This will save it in Memory. If you do not press OK, the item you scanned will be ignored. - (Minus) will change a positive Quantity to a Negative Quantity. N displays the # of Records already scanned. Save is the button you press to Save all the products you scanned. C will clear all the items in Memory This is used to start a new session or to switch between scanning Inventory and Invoice. Clear will clear the selected field. 4

File o o o o o Exit Will close the inventory Software. Help Brings up a help document to guide you through the inventory software. Press ok once finished. Options Allows you to set the portable to Expand from UPC E to UPC - A and also to set the option to have the portable Auto add the quantity. Reload Pricebook This will reload an existing Pricebook, this can be used when uploading to the Portable. Reboot Device Allows you to reboot the handheld if ever needed on supported models. How to do inventory on the portable? 1. Scan an item and enter the total quantity you have in stock and tap OK. 2. Repeat step 1 until you finish. 3. Tap Save and make sure Inventory is selected and tap Save again. 4. You should now see a preview window, make sure to review it and tap Save. Downloading the inventory to the software? 1. Place your portable on the cradle/dock or connect it to your PC 2. Make sure AGKSoft is running on your PC. 3. Open the Portable window 4. Under step (1), select Inventory 5. Under step (2), click Download. When you see the Notepad, review it, make any necessary changes, save and close the Notepad 6. Under step (3), click Update. When you see the Notepad, review it and close it. 7. Under step (4), click Send to Register. 8. Under step (5), click Upload Products to Portable. After this step is complete, you can start all over or simply press the C button on your portable to clear the current inventory from memory and continue. Note that doing Inventory will adjust your current inventory to make it match the new quantity you entered. If the current inventory is 10 and you entered 12, we make an adjustment for +2 so that 10 + 2 = 12. How to program your Price book? When programming your price book, it would be much faster to do all the items in the same department with the same price (e.g. All Cigarettes selling for $4.99). 5

Also, if you scan a new item, you will see UNKNOWN next to description; don t worry about the names yet, when you download the items into AGKSoft, we will automatically fix the names. The step-by-step process is as follows: 1. Scan the UPC-Code 2. Enter the Department # 3. Enter the Selling Price 4. Click OK and repeat steps 1 through 4 5. When you finish with this Department, click Save, you should now see a preview window, make sure to review it and tap OK. 6. You will see the Save dialog, select Inventory and tap SAVE again. 7. Plug your Portable back in the cradle/dock and let it synchronize. 8. Make sure the Portable is Fully Charged before you use it again. 6

How to download Price Changes from the portable? From AGKSoft, do the following: 1. Start the Portable Data Collector interface (Shift-F12). 2. Under (1) Download Type; select Inventory/Price Changes is selected. 3. Under (2) Download from Portable; click Download and you will see the downloaded file open in Notepad. You can simply review your changes and close the Notepad. 4. Under (3) Post Downloaded Data; click Update and you will see the results in Notepad. You can simply review the results and close the Notepad. 5. Under section (4) Upload to Cash register; click Send to Register to send the new items to your Cash Register. 6. Under section (5) Upload to Portable; click Upload Products to Portable and follow the instructions below. Uploading new / existing items to portable 1. From your PC, plug the Portable into the Cradle/Dock 2. Start the Portable Data Collector interface (Shift-F12) and click (5) Upload Products to Portable. A message box will pop up stating how many items are being uploaded and some instructions. 3. You should now see ActiveSync/Device Center automatically synchronizing the data. Please leave the portable plugged in until ActiveSync/Device Center has completely synchronized. This will copy the newly uploaded prices from your PC to the portable. 4. Tap File on the bottom left of the inventory program and select Exit. 5. Reload the Inventory program by tapping Start at the top left, select Programs and then tap AGKSoft Inventory or Inventory. 6. To see if all items were successfully loaded you can tap on the [R] from inside the Inventory program on the handheld; the number that is shown should match the number from the message box that displayed in step 2. 7

How to do your Inventory using the Portable? 1. Scan the UPC-Code and Enter the Quantity on hand. 2. Tap OK and repeat steps 1 through 3 until you finish. 3. When you finish, tap Save and you will see the Save dialog shown below, select Inventory and tap SAVE again. 4. You should now see a preview window, make sure to review it and tap Save. 5. Plug the portable in and let it synchronize. 6. Plug your Portable back in the cradle/dock and let it synchronize. 7. Make sure the Portable is Fully Charged before you use it again. How to start a New Session? 1. Press C to clear the saved data from memory on the Portable. 2. Now you can start over doing your inventory or scanning more invoices. 3. If you exit the Inventory Program, make sure you do Upload products to Portable from the Portable Data Collector interface. You can also do this to simply send all the items with the proper names back to the portable. 8

How to scan an Invoice? 1. Scan the UPC-Code (You can scan the Carton or the Pack) 2. Enter the Quantity you are purchasing under Quantity, If you scanned the Carton, enter how many Cartons you received. 3. Enter the Buying Price and tap OK 4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 until you are finished with your order 5. Tap Save, review all your changes and tap OK to confirm and you will see the Save dialog shown below, select Invoice, enter the Vendor Number and tap SAVE again. To select a Vendor from a list, tap [Vendor Number]. 6. Plug the portable in and let it synchronize. How to download an invoice? From AGKSoft, do the following: 1. Start the Portable Data Collector interface (Shift-F12) 2. Under (1) Download Type; make sure Invoice is selected 3. Under (2) Download from Portable; click Download, select the Vendor you want and tap OK. If there is only a single Invoice, it will automatically open in Notepad. You can simply review your changes and close the Notepad. 4. Under (3) Post Downloaded Data; click Update, select the Vendor you want and tap OK. If there is only a single Invoice, it will automatically load it and open the Vendor Invoice window. 5. Review your Invoice in the Vendor Invoice window, enter the invoice number and click Save when you finish. How to scan a 2nd Invoice using the Portable? 1. Press C to clear the saved data from memory on the Portable. 2. Follow the original instructions on how to scan and invoice. Cold Start or Hard Reset Remove the battery cover. While holding down the Function key, use the stylus to press the Reset button. 9

Rebooting the Symbol PPT88xx or MC50 portables You can reboot the PPT88xx as follow: Press "FUNC", "ENTER" and Scan. You can reboot the MC50 as follow: Use a Paper Clip to Press the "Reset" button on the back. 10

Diagnostic Resolving Connection problems When upgrading to Windows 10, Windows Mobil Device Center does not open, to fix it, open Control Panel, Add Remove Programs and Remove these 2 in order Windows Mobil Device Center Driver Update Windows Mobil Device Center Open AGKSoft, open Portable, Setup and click Download Device Center Make sure UAC (User Account Control) is Disabled or set to Never Notify Install all the Windows Updates, Disable your Security and Restart your PC Reboot the portable, especially if the portable makes the connection half-way and then disconnects). Make sure the Portable is not using econnect. When using a Trigger, make sure the Switch is set to the right (Synchronize and Charge). When in doubt, try removing the trigger and test without it. Make sure Active Sync / Device Center was completely synchronized before removing the portable from the cradle/dock. Verify the portable has a partnership with the PC. You can validate this by opening ActiveSync/Device Center and making sure it doesn t say Guest. If you get an Error after connecting the portable to your PC, make sure there is no error in the background regarding not having a default Email client. You can install Microsoft Office with Outlook to resolve the error or simply ignore it every time you see it. To resolve connection Errors, unplug the Portable, Delete the Partnership and reconnect the Partnership and make a new partnership. Trigger will not scan Make sure the switch on the back is set to the left [Scanner/Printer] Tap the Start menu, select Settings, then System. Tap Symbol Settings and then Settings. Make sure External 5 volts power is set to [Always On]. Remove Trigger and test without it or try scanning using the Yellow buttons on the left and right of the scanner. If it does not scan, make sure AGKSoft is running. The scanner will not scan unless AGKSoft is running. Also make sure there were no errors when AGKSoft was launched. AGKSoft Inventory Software does not run or gives an error Tap the [Start] menu and select [AGKSoft Inventory]. If you do not see it, then look under [Programs]. In order for the [AGKSoft Inventory] software to run properly, tap Start, Settings, select System tab, tap Remove Programs and make sure you have the following installed programs: o Microsoft.NET CF 2.0 o AGKSoft Install o Symbol Managed Class Libraries If you see AGKSoft Inventory, you should remove it. You should also remove any other installed programs. 11

Portable Says Connecting forever Replace the Serial Port or USB2Serial Adapter. This happens often on Windows 10 when the USB2Serial Adapter is not compatible with Windows 10 even though the driver does load properly. Install all the Windows 10 Updates and Reboot. Portable Keeps Disconnecting (Connect and Disconnect) Remove the Portable from the base and tap [Start], select [Settings], select [System] tab, if you find econnect, open it and uncheck all the check-boxes. Remove any large files from Portable. Open [Windows Mobile Device Center], click [File Management], select [Browse the contents of your device], open the root folder [\] and then open the [My Documents] folder. Look for any file that does not have AGKSoft in the name and Delete it. If you cannot delete, reboot the Portable and try again. Disable or Remove any Security Software that was recently installed. Example: Search Protect, AVG, McAfee, Norton, Bit Defender, etc. Windows Mobile Device Center will not open after Windows 10 Update. Open Services and make sure the following Services are running: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator Windows Mobile-based device connectivity Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity o If this Service does not start, do the following: Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On/Off NET Framework 3.5 o Check HTTP and non HTTP Right click Windows Mobile 2003-based device connectivity and select Properties Select the Log On tab and select Local System account and check the following: Allow service to interact with desktop Open Windows Mobile Device Center. Select Mobile Device Settings. Select Connection settings and make sure Allow USB connections is checked. If using a serial base, make sure Allow connections to one of the following: is checked. Also, make sure the proper COM port is selected. 12

Device Center Error If you have an Error in Device Center, try the following: Remove portable from base, open Device Center & Delete all the Partnerships. Remove the Portable from the Base, select Start, Settings, System and look for econnect, if you find it checked, un-check it. Reboot the Portable and your PC. Un-Install and Re-Install Microsoft Device Center. AGKSoft Inventory Software will not install Open My Computer, then open Drive C:, then open Temp folder Right click on INSTALL.BAT and select Run As Administrator AGKSoft Inventory Software will not open properly Make sure the Portable is Fully Charged If you have a Trigger and the Portable is not charging, make sure the Switch is set to Arrow (Right). If it is not charging, remove the trigger and try again. Windows Mobile Device Center To make sure it is properly installed, open the Add/Remove Program and make sure the size is as shown below. Windows 10 Problems with Windows Device Center Attempting to Connect but does not work Open Windows Defender and click Settings You should now see the following: 13

You can turn the Real-time protection off and re-test the portable scanner and see if it works. If it does work, turn it back ON and scroll down until you see Exclusions. Click Add an exclusion. Click Exclude a file and enter C:\Windows\WindowsMobile\wmdc.exe or click Exclude a folder and enter C:\Windows\WindowsMobile. 14
