Before You Begin 1 Before You Begin Before you begin installing your new graphics card, please do the following. Record Your Card s Serial and Part Numbers The serial number and 102 part number printed on the graphics card are required for product registration. They are located on a sticker on the back of the card, and are shown in boldface and underlined in the illustration below. Write these numbers down before installing your new ATI product. Possible serial number and 102 part number arrangement 1 Serial number (S/N) 2 102 part number (P/N)

The Card s Power Supply 3 Installing Hardware This chapter will guide you through the physical installation of your new graphics card. The Card s Power Supply Supplemental power is a basic consideration in the installation process. Your new ATI graphics card requires additional power that is supplemented from the computer s main power supply. Note: For best performance install the graphics card in slot 1 of a PCIe based Power Mac G5. I Power Mac G5 Optical Drive Numbered Expansion Slots Guides PCIe Expansion Slots

4 The Card s Power Supply Installing your graphics card 1 Turn off your computer, monitor, and all other attached peripheral devices. 2 Unplug the computer s power cord and disconnect all cables from the back of your computer. 3 Open your computer. If necessary, consult your computer system manual for instructions. Remember to discharge your body s static electricity by touching the power supply or the metal surface of the computer chassis. 4 If you are replacing an existing graphics card, remove that card. Otherwise, locate an appropriate explansion slot 1, and remove the metal back-plate cover if required. 5 Align the connector on the card with the expansion slot and press firmly until fully seated. 6 Fasten the graphics card securely with the retention screw.

If necessary, consult your computer system manual for instructions. 9 Connect the power cable (B) to the 6-pin power connection (C) on the graphics card. 10 Reconnect any cables you have disconnected and plug in the computer s power cord. 11 Connect the monitor to the new graphics card. 12 Turn on the monitor, and then your computer.

6 Connecting Devices An image of a graphics card with a flashing red power connector will appear on your display and the computer will not start if the graphics card is not correctly connected to the power supply. Connecting Devices The following illustration shows typical connections found on ATI graphics cards: Connector Types VGA DVI-I DVI to VGA Adapter S-Video ADC Supports an analog monitor Supports a digital monitor Supports an analog monitor to DVI-I connection Supports a TV, VCR, Camcorder Supports an Apple Display Connector

Install the Software 7 Installing Software and Drivers This chapter will guide you through the installation of the drivers and software associated with your new graphics card. Install the Software 1 Insert the ATI Installation CD into the computer s optical drive. 2 Double-click on the ATI graphics card installer icon. Note: Mac OS X users may be prompted for the Administrator s password. 3 Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. Upon completion of the installation process, a file containing a list of installed files and their location on your hard disk is created allowing you to locate any file installed during the installation process. 4 When you see a message that the installation was successful, click Restart. To perform further installations, click OK. You need to manually restart your computer to complete the installation of the ATI graphics card software. About ATI Software An ATI graphics card requires several additional components be added to your System folder. The ATI graphics card installer application does this for you, installing the following components: ATI Displays Control Panel ATI Multimedia Components ATI Displays Control Panel The ATI Displays control panel lets you configure your card and access software and hardware features. These features are described in the User s Guide that came with your ATI graphics card.

8 Troubleshooting Tips ATI Multimedia Components ATI s Multimedia Components are placed in the Extensions folder, located within the System/Library/Extensions folder in Mac OS X. They enable all of the advanced features of your card, including 3D and 2D acceleration, where applicable. Troubleshooting Tips If you have a general question, or encounter problems with your card, please review the following troubleshooting tips. Further troubleshooting information can be found on the ATI Customer Care web site at ati.com. Use Apple System Profiler found in the Utilities folder, to generate a report outlining your system configuration. This will assist in diagnosing your computer problem. General Problems Problem Resolution set to 800 x 600 or less A monitor with BNC connectors cannot be connected to the graphics card Support for Power Macintosh computer Possible Solution Change the resolution setting in the Displays control panel in Mac OS X. Monitors that only have BNC connectors require a synchronization ( sync ) signal to be sent down the green line. This is called Sync-on-Green (SOG). ATI graphics cards do not output a SOG signal. Adapters are available for your computer to convert the separate sync signal from the ATI card to a SOG signal for the monitor. Check with your local Apple Authorized Dealer for availability of SOG adapters. ATI graphics cards only work in PCI, AGP, or PCIe based Power Macintosh computers with a PCI (33MHz or 66MHz), AGP expansion slot or PCIe expansion slot. The minimum system requirements for your specific ATI graphics card are listed in the User s Guide and on the product box. Due to the unique design of the Apple G4 Cube, ATI graphics cards will not fit into this system.

User s Guide 9 Available Resources This chapter provides information on where to find the user s guide, where to get additional accessories, how to register your product, and compliance information. User s Guide Your ATI graphics card comes with a User s Guide that provides in-depth information of the card s many features and functions. The User s Guide provides reference, specification, disclaimer, legal, and compliance information that is not contained in this Getting Started guide. In Mac OS X, the User s Guide available on the install CD-ROM. Additional Accessories Additional and replacement cables, installation CD-ROMs, manuals, and other accessories for ATI products can be purchased from the online ATI store at: ati.com/online/accessories Product Registration To activate Customer Care you must register your product with ATI at: ati.com/online/registration Customer Care For detailed instructions on how to use your ATI product, refer to the Online User s Guide included on your ATI installation CD-ROM.
