3 PocketMaxx ECM Update Study Guide THE INFORMATION PROVIDED WITHIN THIS COURSE IS FOR TRAINING PURPOSES ONLY. ALWAYS CONSULT THE LATEST SERVICE, DIAGNOSTIC, AND TOOL INFORMATION, LOCATED ON NAVISTAR S SERVICE PORTAL, PRIOR TO PERFORMING SERVICE ON NAVISTAR ENGINES, VEHICLES, AND EQUIPMENT. Introduction Welcome to the Navistar training course for the PocketMaxx ECM Update Procedure. This course is intended to guide you through the Engine Control Module (ECM) update procedure using the Navistar PocketMaxx electronic service tool. If you have questions or concerns regarding the playback of this program, please contact Navistar Service Education by submitting a case file (Dealer Personnel); or by calling 1-800-365-0088. PocketMaxx ECM Update Tool List To complete this repair, the following tools and components are required: Smart Charger PocketMaxx Reprogramming Harness 406010
PocketMaxx ECM Update Study Guide 4 Prepare Vehicle for Service Before performing this procedure the vehicle must be parked on a level surface with the transmission shifted to park or neutral. The parking brake must be engaged and the wheels chocked. Before Updating the Engine Control Module (ECM), ensure the battery is fully charged and is connected to an external power supply. While updating, Do NOT connect or disconnect a power supply, connect or disconnect any electrical components, or operate any accessories. Power the ECM First, connect a Smart Charger to the vehicle's batteries. Failure to maintain battery voltage between 12.5 and 14 volts may result in improper calibration of the ECM. Prior to running the Update Engine feature, you must disconnect any third-party modules from the data link. To do this, attach the engine reprogramming harness or pull the fuses for these modules.
5 PocketMaxx ECM Update Study Guide Connect Smart Charger Next, install the Reprogramming Harness (Part Number 406010), and turn the switch box to the "ON" position. For further information on vehicle-specific instructions for installing the Reprogramming Harness, refer to iknow article IK2600102 titled: Engine Reprogramming Harness. MAKE SURE THE REPROGRAMMING HARNESS SWITCH IS IN THE "ON" POSITION BEFORE PLUGGING POCKETMAXX INTO THE VEHICLE'S DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC). IF POCKETMAXX IS PLUGGED INTO THE VEHICLE'S DLC BEFORE THE REPROGRAMMING HARNESS IS ON, ERRORS MAY OCCUR DURING PROGRAMMING. Select DLC Adaptor Locate the vehicle s diagnostic link connector (DLC) under the dash panel and determine the type of connector used. Then, select the proper DLC to PocketMaxx adaptor for the vehicle. Connect Power and Data Cable Next, install the DLC adaptor to the PocketMaxx Power and Data cable. Connect to DLC Now that the cable is assembled, connect PocketMaxx to the vehicle s DLC. Turn ON PocketMaxx If PocketMaxx does not start on its own push the power button. The EST will begin its start-up process, which may take several minutes.
PocketMaxx ECM Update Study Guide 6 Subscription Information Screen After the start-up process is complete the EST will display the subscription information screen. This screen will identify the current subscription, tool level, and expiration date of the PocketMaxx software. The tool level indicates the level of access the user has when using the PocketMaxx software. Clicking OK will cause the EST to begin scanning for the vehicle s information. THE POCKETMAXX EST CAN NOT PROGRAM A BLANK ECM. Establishing Communication with the Vehicle The icon in the upper left corner of the screen will turn green once communication is established between the vehicle's ECM and PocketMaxx. If at any point PocketMaxx loses connection with the vehicle s modules, this icon will turn red and the "Back" and "Home" Icons in the task bar will be covered by red 'X'es. Scanning for Vehicle Information During the scanning process, PocketMaxx will automatically generate a "Health Report" showing information such as the engine family, model year, Total Distance driven, Total Fuel consumed, Total Hours the engine has been run, and modules with registered fault codes. You can either click on the links to the Active and Inactive faults, or press the home key to continue to all PocketMaxx Functions. Updating ECM Calibration Most Engine Control Module calibrations can be updated using PocketMaxx. The "Update Engine" function is available on the Home screen menu. If PocketMaxx determines that the current ECM calibration is outdated and there is an update available, the Update Engine function text will be red. If the ECM calibration is up to date, the Update Engine text will be either black or blue, depending on the application. If a previous attempt to program the ECM failed, a message will appear notifying you that the PocketMaxx is entering "Recovery Mode. Clicking "Continue" will allow the PocketMaxx to attempt to install the recovery file. If there was no previous attempt to program the ECM, PocketMaxx
7 PocketMaxx ECM Update Study Guide will display the current calibration version, as well as the newest software version. As you can see here, the current Engine Software Version is not the same as the New Software Version. PocketMaxx will require that a valid Navistar user ID and password is entered before continuing. The user ID that is entered must be validated over an internet connection the first time the ID is used. Once that s done, you can use PocketMaxx anywhere for the next 72 hours without an internet connection. If you know you will be without an internet connection after the initial 72 hour time limit expires, you can force a log in through the "Admin" menu from the Home screen. Updating an ECM may take up to 15 minutes to complete. You will be required to cycle the ignition power several times during the procedure, so be sure that you have adequate time to program the vehicle before continuing. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete ECM programming. When instructed to turn the ignition OFF or ON, do NOT cycle the ignition key. Instead, turn the switch box of the Reprogramming Harness OFF or ON. If the ECM fails to update there will be a message that says "Update Failed". Disconnect all cables, cycle the key, rescan the vehicle, and then try updating the ECM again. If the ECM is updated successfully a message will be displayed saying Update Complete, followed by a Warranty Authorization Code (WAC). The code shown here is just an example but be sure to record and save the codes given after completing an actual ECM Update. To continue after successfully programming the ECM, select "Rescan". PocketMaxx will disconnect from the ECM, re-scan, and connect to the vehicle showing an updated Health Report. Notice that Engine Calibration is now displayed as "Current", verifying a successful update to the ECM. For further information on the PocketMaxx EST, visit the PocketMaxx Resource Center located on the Navistar Service Portal, or Fleet ISIS. CONCLUSION This concludes the Navistar training course for the PocketMaxx ECM Update Procedure. Thank you for your participation.
