GM Dealer IT Techline Guidelines Service and Parts Operations March 2009 As technology continues to grow, GM Service and Parts Operations continues to test, evaluate and recommend infrastructure guidelines for GM Dealers that will increase productivity, efficiencies and network security. At the same time, GM has focused its application development on utilization of the dealers existing equipment to minimize cost. GM has not required it s dealership to upgrade, replace or purchase additional network infrastructure hardware for over a year while maintaining the current GM Dealer IT Guidelines. GM SPO is getting ready to deploy the next generation of vehicle diagnostics called GM Global Diagnostic Systems, GDS. GDS will provide your Multiple Diagnostic Interface or MDI with the diagnostic abilities to allow communications with the next generation of vehicle architecture. GDS can be run in a wireless environment which will allow the mobility of PC devices and technician in-vehicle diagnostics. Laptops or Tablets will also be necessary for your technician to take a vehicle test drive and analyze data. SPO has updated the GM Dealer IT Techline Guidelines so you can understand the network and hardware infrastructure that is necessary to optimize your network and fully utilize Techline application to properly repair vehicles. To allow you to plan for your Techline infrastructure needs going forward, we have highlighted below some of the updates to the Dealer IT Techline Guidelines: GDS will require Core Duo technology and above to run GDS while Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad technology is recommended. Older Pentium Based desktop and laptop technology can continue to run TIS2Web, Service Information and other GM applications and web sites. Windows 2000 Operating Systems will not allow GDS to run properly and will not be XP Pro with Service Pack 3 continues to be available in business grade equipment and is the recommended operating system.

GM plans to deploy Business Vista Q2, 2009 based upon global commitments while evaluating Explorer 8.0 and Windows 7.0 benefits. Mobile Wireless PC devices such as Laptops and Tablets will be needed for GDS in-vehicle diagnosis and vehicle test drives. Small Office Home Office Wireless devices and home grade network devices are not The Dealer IT Guidelines provide suggested Wireless Access Points for running Techline applications. GMSPO has not increased the bandwidth requirements to run GDS at this time but insufficient bandwidth will result in extremely slow application downloads. Please review the Techline IT Guide Lines below which is also posted on GM Dealer Equipment web site at www.gmdesolutions.com under Techline IT Solutions. GM has also released the GM Dealer Infrastructure Guidelines for the entire dealer facility including the Service Department and Techline guidelines which is also posted on GMDEsolutions.. For additional information, please contact Techline Customer Support at 1-800-828-6860 or speak to your local Techline Consultant. 3/30/2009 Page 2 of 10

Service Technician Guideline Summary GMSPO requires all PC and Network devices to be Business Grade. GMSPO requires one (1) PC for every two (2) technicians working in your service area. GMSPO requires Administrative Rights are enabled for the Techline PC client. If the Techline PC User ID does not have administrative rights and applications are not allowed to perform updates, your technicians will be unable to properly diagnose and program vehicles. The General Motors Dealership Techline Infrastructure Guide Lines apply to the Service Technician PC and Network devices along with the specific requirements listed below to properly run the Global Diagnostic System, GDS and Techline applications. Please refer to the GM Techline IT Guidelines and the GM Dealer Infrastructure Guidelines at the www.gmdesolutions.com site Techline IT Solutions tab for PC specifications to run Techline applications.. Global Diagnostic System Guide Line Summary GDS running on existing PC platforms within the dealership will run more efficiently when PC maintenance is performed such as disk clean, disk defragmentation, elimination of all viruses, spyware and third party software that is not required to run Techline applications GDS will run more efficiently on higher end processing PC platforms such as Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad. Running GDS in a wireless environment will be more effective when connecting the MDI to a mobile PC wireless device running GDS with the MDI USB cable opposed to connecting wirelessly directly to the MDI. GDS application may require additional bandwidth than specified in the Infrastructure Guidelines to efficiently operate. Insufficient bandwidth will result in download times that are extremely slow. 3/30/2009 Page 4 of 10

Internet Connectivity Compliance Dealer Size Small (fewer than 200 units/year) Medium (201-899 units/year) Large (900+ units/year) Standard 512 Kbps 768 Kbps 1.54 Mbps Note: GM recommends Dealers maintain On-Demand Back-Up Internet connectivity. Bandwidth requirements listed above may result in speeds and time that could take up to one hour to complete an application download or update over the internet. Application downloads or updates may occur quarterly and not frequently. Navigation time and speed after the application download or update will be more responsive. Navigation time and speed will be determined by the amount of bandwidth speed purchased through your local internet service provider, the number of clients on your network, the type and amount of internet usage and downloading occurring by local users, (streaming video or large data downloads, gaming, file sharing programs, etc) and by your network devices and network configuration. Internet speed and performance regardless of connection type can also be greatly impacted by virus infiltration, spyware and other malicious infiltrations. DMS communication requirements can also utilize significant amounts of bandwidth. Each dealer solution should consider the overall Internet utilization requirements for each area of the dealership. Increases to the required bandwidth speeds may be necessary based upon your facility s environment.
