PerTrac Data Manager Window PerTrac 7 includes a redesigned Data Manager for updating and merging your data. Once configured, Data Manager will run as a service on your computer and will update your selected databases automatically. Every day at a specified time (the default is set at 12:00 am) the service will check the last updated dates on your databases. If a new database has been posted to the PerTrac site, the system will download and merge automatically. The Settings link on the form below provides an option to set the time of day you want the service to run. Note: Your computer must remain on for the service to run. You can lock your computer and the service will continue to run. (If your network administrator requires an overnight profile log out, please contact support for set up assistance) Data Manager can be launched from the Tools tab on the menu bar (it is also in your system tray). When launched, the following window will appear. A new addition to PerTrac supported data is a direct data feed from Bloomberg to a PerTrac compatible database. This option will be available for all users however will only work if the appropriate Bloomberg software and licensing has been met.
Creating a Bloomberg Job within Data Manager To create a Bloomberg download job through PerTrac Data Manager, you must have access to a Bloomberg terminal with the latest version of the Bloomberg API installed. Click here to Learn How to Update Your Bloomberg API. Once you have selected Bloomberg for the task, a window will open with two options. The first option is available to anyone that has access to a Bloomberg Terminal. The second option requires a Bloomberg Data License subscription, which can be obtained through Bloomberg.
The second option requires a license through Bloomberg. The user will have the ability to type in the license provided from Bloomberg into Data Manager.
Selecting A Start Date for the Bloomberg Download The user has the ability to select a fixed start data for all data being downloaded for the specified job or can select "Since Inception," which will pull data for the start date of each investment selected. If selecting a custom start date the dropdown can be used to select a day, month, and year. A specific date may also be manually entered by typing in the desired date in the correct format (DD/MM/YYYY)
Selecting a Currency There are currently 10 different currencies that may be selected from a dropdown on the "Options" tab within the wizard. Only one type of currency may be selected per job. If additional currencies are desired, separate download jobs should be set up for each currency class. If additional currencies are desired, please contact PerTrac support and make a request for them to be added to the list.
Setting the Time Series There are four different time series that may be selected for each Bloomberg job. 1. Daily 2. Weekly 3. Monthly 4. Quarterly By default, the Monthly time series will be selected, but can easily be changed by checking off one of the other options. (Multiple time series may be selected)
Entering Investments to be Updated Multiple investments can be updated at once using the Bloomberg Update utility through Data Manager. Simply type in the Bloomberg ticker for the desired securities into the name field. Multiple ticker symbols may be copied form a list and pasted into the name field. The name filed will only allow a security to be entered once and will remove all duplicates from any list that is copied and pasted into the selection window. Below is an example of what will happen if the same security is entered twice. (The name section is not case sensitive) Securities may be deleted from the list by right clicking on the security and selecting "Delete" from the list.
Once all securities have been added to the list and "Next" is selected in the lower right hand corner, a window will open indicating that the ticker symbols are being validated. This may take several minutes depending on the amount of securities that are selected.
Naming the Download Job Each job created within PerTrac Data Manager should be given a unique name to identify the purpose of the Job. Simply type in the desired name for the newly created job into the "Job Name" section of the "Destination" section of the wizard.
Selecting a Download Folder and Destination Database Both the "Bloomberg Terminal" and the "Enterprise Data License" option allow the user to download data from Bloomberg into a new Access database where the Bloomberg terminal is installed. Users that have access to the Enterprise Data License through Bloomberg have the additional option of updating a PerTrac database with data from Bloomberg. The "Download Only" option allows the user to browse for a specific folder location for the Bloomberg data to be stored. The "Automated Update" option allows users to download data from Bloomberg and merge the data into a PerTrac compatible database. This process is identical to how Data Manager updates PerTrac specific data.
Data Manager can update both Access databases and SQL databases with Bloomberg data when selecting the "Automated Update" option on the "Destination" page of the wizard (This option is only permitted on the Enterprise data license version of the utility).
A database may be selected from the "PerTrac Databases" dropdown list at the top of the page. If the desired database is not located among the list of available databases, simply brows for the desired database using the "Location" section and clicking on the browse folder. If a SQL database is required, use the "SQL Server Connection Details" section to identify the database that you would like to update.
License Agreement The terms and conditions of the Bloomberg license agreement must be accepted in order to move on and complete the data download or update. The agreement may also be printed by clicking on the "Print Agreement" hyper-link at the bottom of the page.
Confirmation Page The final step of the wizard is the conformation page and is not saved until finished is selected.
Running the Bloomberg Job The job will be set up to run automatically based on the global Data Manager settings. You may run the job at any time by clicking on the "green play" button to the right of the job. The job can also be edited or deleted at any time by clicking on the icon that displays a "pencil and paper" to edit the job or the icon that displays a red "X" to delete the job.
