WHAT IS AN SPD? Surge Protection Devices prevent excess electrical current (surges) from reaching devices connected beyond them. When an electrical surge is detected, the SPD diverts the excess current away from the active line directing it to ground. HOW ARE SURGES GENERATED? Although lightning is the most spectacular form of externally generated surges, it is only one of many possible sources. Other sources include switching of power circuits, operation of electrical equipment by neighboring industries, the operation of power factor correction devices and the switching and clearing of faults on transmission lines. It is important to note that lightning does not need to directly strike a power line for damage to occur; a strike in close proximity can induce damaging surges. Additionally, it is estimated that 70-80% of all power surges are generated internal to one s own facility, by the switching of electrical loads such as lights, heating systems, inductive motor loads and the operation of equipment. WHY DO YOU NEED SPDS? With the statistical nature of lightning and the broad spectrum of energy delivered by a lightning flash, as well as with the problems created by various power generation/ distribution systems and the continued trend toward more sensitive and specialized electronics, facilities are increasingly required to protect equipment and sensitive loads against power surges. WHERE TO APPLY SPD S? UL 1449-Ed. 4 separates permanently connected SPDs into two categories: Type 1 & Type 2. IEEE C62.41 separates facility locations into three categories: A, B & C. IEEE recommends that when designing a power protection system, a cascading scheme be implemented with the appropriate devices coordinated to the locations with sensitive loads throughout the facility. The service entrance is the main entry point for lightning or utility generated surges. In general, it is where the highest surge current rated devices are located. IEEE category C - UL Type 1 or Type 2 devices are applicable in the service entrance location. The distribution/branch panels protect from residual power surges not captured by the service entrance protection and additionally protect against internally generated power surges. IEEE category B UL Type 2 devices are applicable in the distribution/branch panel locations. Because of the impedance in the wire, ALWAYS ensure the SPD is connected with the shortest and straightest lead length possible. SELECTING THE RIGHT : Safety Listing UL 1449-4th Ed. Location Rating Type 1 (line side of MDP) or Type 2 (load side of MDP) & Distribution Panels Performance VPR, (Voltage Protection Ratingclamping voltage) UL 1449 4th Ed. Nominal Discharge Current Rating (In): Highest In rating is 20kA. LPS Compliant To obtain UL 96A Master Labeling of the Lightning Protection System, UL 96A requires SPDs be installed on all Service Entrance locations and be listed as Type 1 or Type 2 with a UL 1449 20kA In rating Surge Rating The manufacturer s surge current rating is the SPD s ability to withstand transients rated per phase and per mode based on the internal protective components Modular Design (serviceability) Allows for field serviceable modules Compact (non-modular design) Complete product replacement in the event of failure Connection Method Breaker connected recommended. Enclosure Rating Indoor (NEMA 1), Outdoor (NEMA 4), or Corrosive (NEMA 4X) are the typical enclosure ratings for SPDs Physical Mounting Options Side/Bottom of Panel, Flush Mounted (dry wall), Switchboard Top Mounting AIC Rating Per NEC 285-6 the SPD must be rated equal to or greater than the point of connection on the electrical system Monitoring Features Visual indication of power and proper operation, Remote Alarm Contacts and a Surge Event Counter are some options offered with SPDs Warranty Industry Standard is Twelve (12) Years Unlimited Replacement SPD Dimensions Most electrical rooms are small. Keeping the connected wire length short means having an SPD that will physically fit in the space allocated without sacrificing the SPD performance rating with long connection wires.
