1 SWOP 10 Specification Errata 1.1 About SWOP Errata SWOP Errata is designed to provide a mechanism to update the SWOP Specification between major editions. Errata may be used to identify errors in the Specification or to document minor updates that have been approved for publication in the next version of the SWOP Specification. In both cases the Errata is meant to be used with the current version of the SWOP Specification and will override the specified portion of that specification. 1.2 Structure of SWOP Errata Each item listed in the SWOP Errata has the following structure: A unique identifier for each Errata Item The date on which the Errata Item was posted and will take effect A reference to current version of the SWOP Specification by section/subsection title and page in the printed version of the Specification The type of the Errata Item. Categories include, Typographic Error, Minor Error, Major Error, and New Specification. Original text provides a reference back to the current version of the SWOP Specification. Replacement text shows Errata replacements in red type. This is the text that prevails. 1

1.3 Errata Listings 1.3.2 Errata Item 10.1 Errata Item: 10.1 Date: February 15, 2006 Reference: Paper-Proofing Stock, Page 14 SWOP 10 th Edition Booklet Errata Type: Specification Update Original Text: Paper-Proofing Stock Standard SWOP proofing paper is 60# basis weight paper of 73# (nominal) TAPPI brightness. Brightness will vary with age. The paper stock may be a coated groundwood stock or a sheet coated to simulate the appearance of such a ground wood stock. A paper known to meet these specifications is SWOP Specified Proofing Paper, manufactured by Tembec Paper Group, and distributed by Manchester Industries (908-268-2345) and sold in sheet form by various paper merchants. Other papers meeting the technical specifications shown on Page 40 may be used. Replacement Text: Paper-Proofing Stock Two SWOP proofing paper grades are now specified. The first SWOP proofing paper is 60# basis weight paper of 72# (nominal) TAPPI brightness. Brightness will vary with age. The paper stock may be a coated groundwood stock or a sheet coated to simulate the appearance of such a ground wood stock. A paper known to meet these specifications is SWOP Specified Proofing Paper (Monterey Gloss), manufactured by Tembec Paper Group, and distributed by Manchester Industries (908-268-2345) and sold in sheet form by various paper merchants. Specifications for this paper are shown below. Any papers meeting the technical specifications may be substituted. # gsm brightness opacity gloss Monterey Gloss 36 53 72 88 48 38 56 72 88 480 40 59 72 89 50 45 67 72 90 55 50 74 72 91 58 55 81 72 91 58 60 89 72 92 58 70 104 72 94 58 2

A second SWOP proofing stock was approved by SWOP in December 2005. This #3 grade proofing stock is the brighter coated stock that is preferred by many creatives and agencies for proofing. A paper known to meet this specification is Fortune Gloss, manufactured by Stora Enso. Specifications for this paper are shown below. Any papers meeting this specification may be substituted. # gsm brightness opacity gloss Fortune Gloss 60 89 88 91 70 70 104 88 92 70 80 118 88 94 70 100 148 88 95 70 Note: Paper specs came from Tembec and Stora Enso respectively. 3

1.3.3 Errata Item 10.2 Errata Item: 10.2 Date: February 15, 2006 Reference: Paper-Proofing Stock, Page 14 SWOP 10 th Edition Booklet Errata Type: Specification Update Original Text: No. 3 Grade Coated Publication Paper It is widely known that many publications routinely use papers brighter than a No. 5 coated paper for both covers and entire magazines. Since the SWOP proofing specifications indicate the use of a No. 5 coated as a common paper, the color rendition, particularly as an objective scientific characterization, is not sufficient to properly characterize this printing. Therefore, while SWOP does not want to introduce a new or second proofing stock at this time, it would be for the benefit of the publication industry if printing on this brighter No. 3 stock could be characterized. This paper will be characterized using the same methodology as was used on the No. 5 stock that has been characterized in the CGATS Technical Report 001, Graphic technology- Color characterization data for Type 1 Printing. This effort has become even more important with the recent introduction of GRACoL Commercial Printing press sheets as documented in CGATS DTR 004. It is expected that there will be a general trend toward these reference printing conditions as a basis for color management. To this end, there is now a renewed priority to print representative samples on No. 3 coated paper as a reference for this type of publication printing. Replacement Text: No. 3 Grade Coated Publication Paper It is widely known that many publications routinely use papers brighter than a No. 5 grade coated paper for both covers and text. This brighter paper stock has also come into favor as the proofing stock of choice for many agencies and creative. Until now, SWOP proofing specifications have indicated the use of a No. 5 coated as a common proofing paper for publication printing. However, in response to industry demand, SWOP approved a second, brighter proofing stock in December 2005. During 2006 this paper will be characterized by the IDEAlliance Print Properties Committee on behalf of SWOP for inclusion in the Version 11 Specification. 4

1.3.2 Errata Item 10.3 Errata Item: 10.4 Date: February 15, 2006 Reference: Proposed SWOP Guidelines for No. 5 Coated Paper, Page 75, Appendix 1, SWOP 10 th Edition Booklet Errata Type: Specification Update Original Text: Proposed SWOP Guidelines for No. 5 Coated Paper Replacement Text: Proposed SWOP Guidelines for No. 5 Coated Publication Paper Note: The word Publication has been added to match the reference on page 23 and so that this chart will not mistakenly be applied to proofing papers. 5
