This installation is to be performed only by certified Sierra Wireless AirLink distributors. If it is performed by anyone other than the certified AirLink distributor, the terms of the warranty agreement are void. This is a step-by-step guide for installing the following X-Cards in an AirLink GX Series device: Dual Ethernet X-Card Wi-Fi X-Card Serial I / O X-Card You are modifying sensitive electronic equipment and your body may be charged with static electricity. This charge could discharge through electronic components you handle, possibly destroying your electronic equipment. Proper ESD protocol must be used before modification of any electronic equipment. Please make sure you are properly grounded (using a grounding strap). Note: These instructions assume that the SIM Card (if required) is already installed. If you need to install the SIM Card as part of this procedure, refer to the AirLink GX Series Hardware User Guide for instructions. Required tools: 2 mm Allen (hex) wrench or a #1 Phillips screwdriver, depending on the screw type used on the black decorative cover Torx screwdriver (size T20) Small adjustable torque wrench (Serial I / O and Wi-Fi X-Cards only) 4 mm nut driver or socket that works with the torque wrench (Serial I/O X-Card only) 8 mm (5/16'') socket, long enough to fit over the SMA antenna connector (Wi-Fi X-Card only) Preparing the GX device Table 1 shows the minimum GX device requirements for installing an X-Card. Sierra Wireless recommends that you update to the latest version of ALEOS before installing the X-Card. To determine the ALEOS version and boot version, power up the device, log in to ACEmanager, and go to Status > About. Table 1: Minimum GX device requirements for X-Card installation Requirement Dual Ethernet X-Card Wi-Fi X-Card I / O X-Card ALEOS version 4.3.3 or later 4.2.4 or later 4.3.3 or later Boot version 1.0.9 or later 1.0.9 or later 1.0.11 or later 2014 Sierra Wireless. To upgrade the ALEOS version: 1. Go to www.sierrawireless.com/support/downloads and download: The latest version for your device and Mobile Network Operator The latest revision of the ALEOS Software Configuration User Guide (if you do not already have it) 2. Follow the instructions in chapter 2 of the User Guide (Device Configuration) to update the ALEOS software. Note: An RMA is required to update the boot version. First Steps for Installing an X-Card 1. Remove the 4 screws holding the decorative black cover in place. Keep the screws. You will need these later. Remove the decorative black cover. 5. Place the new cover assembly (gray cover and decorative black cover) onto the base of the device, being careful to ensure a snug fit by lining up the rubber insulation so that it is flush with the edge of the Ethernet ports. You may need to tilt the back of the cover up slightly to line up the rubber seals with the Ethernet ports, line up the screw holes, and make sure the gaskets around the Ethernet ports fit tightly and are not folded over. 6. Use the screws you saved from step 3 on page 2 to attach the cover assembly (gray cover and decorative black cover) to the base of the device (torque to 10 in-lbs.) 7. Visually inspect the GX device to ensure ingress protection is maintained. Check the following: The 4 screws on the top of the GX device are fastened snugly, so that the seal on the underside of the black decorative cover is tight against the gray device cover. The 4 screws on the bottom of the GX device are tight, the foam seal between the base and the gray device cover is intact and there are no gaps. The gasket around the Ethernet ports is snug with no gaps and the gasket is not folded in on itself. Figure 9: AirLink GX device with Dual Ethernet X-Card installed 6 4114494
