1. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore 2.0 on Microsoft SQL Server Note: Refer to the MetaXpress Database Guide for detailed information on connecting to and configuring a MDCStore database. http://www.moleculardevices.com/product_literature/family_links.php?prodid=114 MDCStore 2.0 database is compatible with MetaXpress 2.0 software and AcuityXpress 2.0 software. It is not compatible with MetaXpress 1.6, 1.7 software or AcuityXpress 1.0 software. The operation of MetaXpress 2.0 software and AcuityXpress 2.0 software requires the upgrade to MDCStore 2.0 database. If versions of MetaXpress software or AcuityXpress software older than 2.0 are installed they must be upgraded. Directions will be found on the respective CDs. Use the Install\Upgrade MDCStore option available on the MetaXpress software and AcuityXpress 2.0 software CDs to install or upgrade to MDCStore 2.0 database on a local or remote computer (MSDE and Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 only). For instructions on installing or upgrading the MDCStore database on Oracle, see Chapter 2, Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore Schema to Version 2.0 on Oracle Server. ã=warning: The instructions provided of Oracle database and Microsoft SQL are offered as a guidance only. Oracle and Microsoft SQL are not products of Molecular Devices or MDS Analytical Technologies. Please consult an information technology professional, such as a Database Administrator (DBA) to optimize the installation for your facility according to your company s guidelines. For customers without access to DBAs, we advise hiring a database consultant. Please contact the appropriate software vendor with any questions about the installation, security and operation of these programs. 1

1. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore 2.0 on Microsoft SQL Server 1.1. MICROSOFT SQL REQUIREMENTS You should have installed MS SQL Server 2000\2005 Server or MSDE on a computer before running the installer. Both the computer Operating System and the Database servers software MUST be installed with U.S. English as the language setting. Consult Appendix A for recommended instructions for installing Microsoft SQL Server 2000 on the Database Server computer. Note: For optimal performance, the database management software (Microsoft SQL) should be installed on a server that is dedicated to MDCStore. If installed on a server hosting other databases or applications, it may decrease MetaXpress and AcuityXpress performance. 1.2. INSTALLATION OF NEW MDCSTORE 2.0 DATABASE (MS SQL SERVER) You must run the MDCStore database installer on the computer on which you are creating the new database. You must have administrative privileges on the computer. Note: It is recommended that you obtain the latest installer from the Molecular Devices website. http://www.moleculardevices.com/pages/software/metaxpress.html or, http://www.moleculardevices.com/pages/updates/acuityxpress_1_update_izkr.html. 1 Insert the MetaXpress CD or AcuityXpress 2.0 CD into your CD drive. (If the autorun splash screen does not start automatically, open My Computer, browse to the CD drive and double-click on the AutoRun.exe icon (MetaXpress) or Setup.exe icon (AcuityXpress). 2 Select Install\Upgrade MDCStore. 3 Click Yes to confirm installation of MDCStore 2.0 database. 4 Select Create new database on this computer. In the Computer\SQL Instance field, select a SQL instance. If you are installing the MDCStore database on MSDE, SQL Server 2000 or 2005, select a named instance like [computer name]. 5 Enter a name for the new database in the New database name field. 6 Select Create. 7 At this step of the wizard you specify a directory in which to install the database. Browse to select a directory. Note: Molecular Devices recommends installing the database on a computer with at least two separate partitions. Molecular Devices recommends storing the database on the second partition usually a separate hard drive labeled as D: rather than the main partition with the operating system (OS) and software. Storing the data on the hard drive that doesn t have the OS and main applications running increases performance and 2

1.3. Upgrade to MDCStore Database to 2.0 from an Earlier Version of MDCStore Database (MS SQL Server) ensures that your data will be accessible even if the operating system located on the C drive is damaged and/or needs to be reinstalled. We do not recommend using external hard drives as these can be easily turned off and you will not have access to the data. Do not install on a mapped or network drive for the same reason. 8 Click on OK to continue. 9 If the installation is successful, the following message is displayed: The database has been installed successfully. The database version will also be displayed. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box. 10 The Create a Data Source Dialog appears, allowing you to create an ODBC connection to the database. 11 In the New Data Source field, type in a data source name. This is simply an alias for the new connection, so you can call it anything that you will recognize. 12 Click Create to create the data source. 13 Click OK in the confirmation dialog box. 1.3. UPGRADE TO MDCSTORE DATABASE TO 2.0 FROM AN EARLIER VERSION OF MDCSTORE DATABASE (MS SQL SERVER) ã=warning: Molecular Devices is not responsible for damage to existing user data that could happen due to network problems, power failure, unexpected termination of the upgrade process or customization of the existing MDCStore database. You should make a full backup of your database before beginning an upgrade procedure. Note: MDCStore database can be upgraded over the network. 1 Insert the MetaXpress CD or AcuityXpress 2.0 CD into your CD drive. (If the autorun splash screen does not start automatically open My Computer, browse to the CD drive and double-click on the AutoRun.exe icon (MetaXpress) or Setup.exe icon (AcuityXpress). 2 Select Install\Upgrade MDCStore. 3 Click Yes to confirm upgrade of MDCStore database to version 2.0. 4 Choose option to upgrade existing database. 5 To upgrade a database on this computer, select the following options as shown in the screen shot below. a Update an existing database b Update a database on this computer Highlight the database of interest and click Update. 3

1. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore 2.0 on Microsoft SQL Server 6 To upgrade a database on the network, select the option Update a database on the network, highlight the data source of interest, and click Update. Note that you will need to have already created an ODBC link to the data source for the database that you want to upgrade. 4

1.3. Upgrade to MDCStore Database to 2.0 from an Earlier Version of MDCStore Database (MS SQL Server) 7 The following message will be displayed. Please, read carefully: WARNING: The update will permanently affect all of the data currently stored in your MDCStore database. Earlier Versions of AcuityXpress and MetaXpress will not be able to connect to the database after the update! Before proceeding with the update, please make sure that you have: 1) Backed up your database 2) Provided some free space on the disk where the database is stored. We recommend that the free space available is at least 30% of the size of your database. 3) Allowed time for the update to proceed without interruption. The process may take up to several days for a very large database. The updater will be processing data until it is complete. Any interruption of the update process may put your data at risk. Click OK to continue with current operation. Figure 1.1: Screen shot of error message. Note: Do NOT interrupt until data processing is complete. 8 If the upgrade is successful, the following message is displayed: Database [database name] has been updated successfully. The database version will also be displayed. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box. 5

1. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore 2.0 on Microsoft SQL Server 6

2. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore Schema to Version 2.0 on Oracle Server 2.1. ORACLE REQUIREMENTS You should have installed Oracle 9i or 10g on a computer before running the installer. Both the operating system and database should be installed with U.S. English as their language setting. Note: For optimal performance, the database management software (Oracle) should be installed on a server that is dedicated to MDCStore. If installed on a server hosting other databases or applications, it may decrease the performance of the MetaXpress software and the AcuityXpress software. ã=warning: The instructions provided of Oracle database and Microsoft SQL are offered as a guidance only. Regarding the Oracle installation, there can be significant differences from one version of Oracle to another. These are not discussed in our notes and should be clarified by a DBA. A short set of examples of such differences include: 1 Oracle 10g introduces big table spaces that may be used. We do not describe how these can be used nor have we tested them. 2 Customers may also consider installation of the schema on different partitions. 3 We do not have any restrictions on creating global users in Oracle through MDCStore 2.0 database. It is up to customer to decide how best to proceed. 7

2. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore Schema to Version 2.0 on Oracle Server 2.2. INSTALLATION OF MDCSTORE 2.0 DATABASE Use the appropriate schema installation script file (i.e., MDCStoreInstallOracle.sql) file to install the MDCStore schema. 1 If you are running a MSDE SQL or Microsoft SQL Sever 2000/2005, do not use this procedure. 2 Multiple scripts have been provided one is for installation and the remainder are for updating existing schemas and data. 3 It is highly recommended that you obtain the latest Database scripts from the Molecular Devices website. http://www.moleculardevices.com/pages/software/metaxpress.html or, http://www.moleculardevices.com/pages/updates/acuityxpress_1_update_izkr.html 4 Database scripts are also located on the MetaXpress 2.0 CD in the \Tools\Database\Scripts directory and on the AcuityXpress CD in the AcuityXpress directory. The scripts on the CD may not be as up to date as those available on the Molecular Devices website. Purpose of script Installing MDCStore database Updating MDCStore database Upgrading existing data Script Name MDCStoreInstallOracle.sql MDCStoreUpdateOracle.sql MDCStoreUpdateOracle_3.sql MDCStoreUpdateOracle_1.sql and MDCStoreUpdateOracle_2.sql 5 For a fresh installation of MDCStore database you will only need to use the Install script (MDCStoreInstallOracle.sql). 6 It is not recommended that you run the update or upgrade scripts unless it is necessary. 7 It is also not recommended to run the update or upgrade scripts more than once on the same database. 8 If you already have a MDCStore database setup skip ahead to Section 2.3., Upgrade to MDCStore 2.0 Database from an Earlier Version (Oracle). 9 You must have the following privileges in Oracle to install the MDCStore schema: a Create tablespaces. 8

2.2. Installation of MDCStore 2.0 Database b Create users. c Create groups. d Grant permissions on database objects. e Create and drop database objects. 10 To insure you have these privileges connect with login SYS or SYSTEM. Connect as option SYSDBA which will require you to change from the default or Normal. 11 Database names cannot contain spaces or special characters. The names screening 1 and screening#2 are not valid database names. The names screening_1 and screening_2 are valid database names. Limit the characters used for the database names to alphanumeric (0-9, a-z) and underscores (_). 12 The tablespace must be allowed to expand past this initial size and may require significantly more space as the database expands. We recommend starting the database with 2 GB of space. Molecular Devices recommends installing it to a dedicated data partition and not to the primary drive because the database can grow very large. We do not recommend using external hard drives as these can be easily turned off and you will not have access to the data. Complete the following procedure to install the MDCStore schema on an Oracle server: 13 Use the SQL*Plus Worksheet program to connect to the Oracle server as User sys, connected as SYSDBA. SQL*Plus Worksheet is installed as part of Oracle. 14 Execute the following statement to create a tablespace for the MDCStore schema: CREATE TABLESPACE "<your table space name here>" NOLOGGING DATAFILE <table space location> SIZE <initial size of the database (i.e. 2000M)> AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 2000M MAXSIZE UNLIMITED EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO; COMMIT; 695M REUSE AUTOEXTEND Note: The less than and greater than brackets, <sample text>, indicate that valid text should replace the text inside the brackets. Do NOT include the brackets in the actual command. However, if quotation marks surround the sample text, the quotation marks must be included in the command. Example File Name Format: Windows: Linux/Unix: C:\ORACLE\ORADATA\MDCStore1\MDCStore.ora C/opt/oracle/oradata/ora1/MDCStore.dbf 9

2. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore Schema to Version 2.0 on Oracle Server ã=warning: Recommendations are for database installation. They are not intended to provide guidelines for managing corporate databases. Some of the options may not be appropriate for specific environments. Please discuss plans with your DBA to determine whether 2 GB is a sufficient starting point. Eventually more table space may need to be allocated. 15 If running Oracle 9, it is recommended that a temporary tablespace that will be dedicated to the MDCStore schema be created. If it is not created Oracle will use its default temporary tablespace, which can decrease database performance. If you are using Oracle 10 please skip this step. Execute the following statement to create a temporary logical tablespace: CREATE TEMPORARY TABLESPACE "<your temporary table space name here>" TEMPFILE <table space location> SIZE 2000M EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL UNIFORM SIZE 1M 16 Execute the following statement to create a global user which will be used as the schema provider: CREATE USER <global user name> PROFILE "DEFAULT" IDENTIFIED GLOBALLY AS '' DEFAULT TABLESPACE <your table space name here> TEMPORARY TABLESPACE <your temporary table space name here> QUOTA UNLIMITED ON <your table space name here> ACCOUNT UNLOCK; GRANT "CONNECT" TO <global user name> ; COMMIT; 17 Execute the following statement to switch your current connection to the schema where you want to install the MDCStore schema: ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA = <global user name>; COMMIT; 18 Execute the following statement to ensure the schema does not already contain data: select * from all_objects where owner = <global user name> ; If there is no response, the schema contains no data. 10

2.3. Upgrade to MDCStore 2.0 Database from an Earlier Version (Oracle) ã=warning: If the schema does contain data, installing the database will delete all data without warning. However, you may choose to update the database with the Update script provided. 19 If you are using SQL*Plus Worksheet, go to File > Open and open the appropriate Installation.sql file. Open the appropriate update.sql file if you plan on updating the database. 20 Click the Execute button to create the database in the specified schema. 21 Continue to the Section 2.4., Testing the Connection to the MDCStore Database. 2.3. UPGRADE TO MDCSTORE 2.0 DATABASE FROM AN EARLIER VERSION (ORACLE) ã=warning: Molecular Devices is not responsible for damage to existing user data that could happen due to network problems, power failure, unexpected termination of the upgrade process or customization of the existing MDCStore database. You should make a full backup of your database before beginning an upgrade procedure. Note: For MDCStore database version 2.0 the upgrade involves 2 steps. The first upgrades the database schema from the older version to the latest and the second step upgrades the data to be compatible with the new schema. The following is an example procedure to upgrade the MDCStore schema on an Oracle server: 1 Use the SQL*Plus Worksheet programs to connect to the Oracle server. SQL*Plus Worksheet is installed as part of Oracle. 2 To insure you have the privileges mentioned above (step 8 in Section 2.2.) connect with login SYS or SYSTEM. Connect as option SYSDBA which will require you to change from the default or Normal. 3 Switch your current connection to the schema you want to upgrade by executing following statement: ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA = <your schema name here>; COMMIT; 4 To update the existing database schema execute the following statement: @<full path to file>\ MDCStoreUpdateOracle.sql Repeat for all update scripts starting ending with 3 and up. Example MDCStoreUpdateOracle_3.sql. 11

2. Installation/Upgrade of MDCStore Schema to Version 2.0 on Oracle Server 5 After the database schema is updated to the latest version you need to upgrade existing data: i Open the MDCStoreUpdatelOracle_1.sql file from the File menu in the SQL*Plus Worksheet and click the Execute button. ii After the script is executed open MDCStoreUpdatelOracle_2.sql file from the File menu in the SQL*Plus Worksheet and click the execute button. WARNING: The update will permanently affect all of the data currently stored in your MDCStore database. Earlier versions of AcuityXpress and MetaXpress will not be able to connect to the database after the update. 2.4. TESTING THE CONNECTION TO THE MDCSTORE DATABASE You must confirm that you have a connection to the database from your computer. Please check with your IT department to confirm your privilege levels and confirm the connection. You will need administrator level privileges on the client to establish the connection. The procedure below is only offered as an example. Your procedure may differ substantially from this depending upon the operating system and software versions. 1 Install Oracle client software on your machine and confirm that it is configured to connect to the installed MDCStore database. Use Oracle Net Manager or similar application to configure Service Naming. 2 From the Windows Start menu, go to Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC). The ODBC Data Source Administrator program opens. 3 Click the System DSN tab and click Add. The Create New Data Source dialog opens. 4 Select the Oracle ODBC driver provided by Oracle (for example, Oracle Orahome; do not use Oracle drivers provided by other companies) and click Finish. The Oracle ODBC driver configuration dialog opens. 5 Enter a Data Source name and a Source Description. 12

2.5. Login to the MDCStore Schema 6 Select a TNS service name, which should be available if you set up your Oracle Service Naming correctly. 7 Click Test Connection. 2.5. LOGIN TO THE MDCSTORE SCHEMA The first time you login to MDCStore schema, you must login using the SYSTEM account. Once you are logged in, set up users for MDCStore schema using the MDCStore database user configuration system described in the MetaXpress Database Guide found online http://www.moleculardevices.com/product_literature/ family_links.php?prodid=114. 13
