MAXIMIZING THE RANGE OF YOUR WIRELESS ROUTER MAY 7, 2015
THE WIRELESS ROUTER The ASUS RT-AC3200 Tri-Band Wireless AC3200 Gigabit Router. ASUS part number RT- AC3200. This one of the newest best routers on the market. Additionally, our server software interfaces to this router to provide a much more optimized performance of video transmission over the wireless network. Important Advice: If any part of this guide seems confusing, seek help from someone more experienced in setting up a home wireless router. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8hjijf7joy THE OPTIMAL ROUTER SETUP BEFORE YOU SETUP YOUR ROUTER, MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE LATEST FIRMWARE!!! YOU CAN FIND THE LATEST COPY ON THE ASUS WEB PAGE BY SEARCHING THE RT-AC3200 PART NUMBER. Our router setup advice: 1. You router is actually 3 routers one using 2.5Ghz and two using 5.0Ghz (5.1 to 5.8 Ghz). Make sure you give both of them with the same name and password. This will allow your clients (ipads, computers, tablets, etc.) to automatically connect at the best bandwidth. This is called Smart Connect. We tested with the default settings and it was great. 2. Make sure you use a router password that is not obvious or you may have 1000+ fans connected before you know it 3. Hide the SSID so not everyone can see it and attempt to connect. 4. If you do not have an internet connection, make sure you go to the ASUS website and download the latest firmware for the router. You can install the firmware following the directions in the ASUS router setup guide. 5. Restrict Router Access to specific device MAC addresses so unauthorized users cannot see or even attempt to attach. Once your router is setup, make sure you connect all your client devices to the wireless network to make sure they are ready to go.
INCREASING ROUTER PERFORMANCE AND RANGE While the routers we recommend have great range, there are a few things you can do to dramatically increase the range and performance. This means turning the antennas to all face a single direction and then rotating the router so the antennas are pointing to your intended target areas both sidelines.
To achieve this optimized router setup, there are a few inexpensive items we can buy that make this a snap. The Parts List Tripod for the Wireless Router: Mounted on a tripod the router easily flips up and you can aim it at the sideline and get the best possible signal. You can use any tripod we use the Vanguard VS-82 Table Top Digital Camera Tripod and we got it on Amazon for $22. Amazon ASIN#: B0002J2TLC Tripod adapter Mount the Wireless Router: To attach the router to the tripod we got this nice little Tripod Adapter Mount (meant for a tablet) and it worked perfectly and even has a quick release attachment. We got it on Amazon for $13 Amazon ASIN#: B008UH8SRM Hint: a big zip tie (like the kind they use for attaching a/c ducts) securing holding the router to the bracket is always a good idea to make sure it does not pop out of the bracket.
Attach Router to Tripod so you can flip it up on the side with the front (top) facing the users. a few zip ties will make sure it stays on the bracket
Make sure all the antennas are fully extended out
Point the front (actually the top) of the router towards your sideline (the location of your users)
