The template includes a graphic f the Engineering Design Prcess that aligns with the 3 rd grade Oregn Science Cntent Standards. If yu are using it fr earlier grades (even thugh wrk samples are nt required befre 3 rd grade), please see the list f suggested changes at the end f this dcument. Pages f the Template First let s cnsider what s n each page and what the students will add t these pages. Cver: The student shuld fill in the blanks. semester/trimester and class sectin. Yu can give specific guidance abut things like Inside frnt cver: A graphic summarizes the engineering designs assumed by the 3 rd grade engineering design sectin f the Oregn Science Cntent standards. Yu can use the glssary f terms at the end f this dcument t explain the steps t yur students. Table f Cntents: This page lists the sectins f the engineering design ntebk. In mst cases yu will want t allw yur students t decide hw many pages each sectin shuld have. Yu may want t tell them the minimum and maximum number f pages fr each sectin. The students shuld number each page and put the starting page number f each sectin n this page. The Prblem: Yu may want t assign a specific prblem r yu might want t assign a categry f prblems t be slved. An example f the frmer wuld be design a cntainer that can be used carry 50 crayns r 30 clred pencils. An example f the latter wuld be design smething that wuld be useful fr students ging t and frm schl. In mst cases the prblem shuld be described in terms f a human need r sme ther need. Ptential Slutin: Students shuld use this sectin t describe a ptential slutin t the prblem. They can bth draw their idea and describe it using wrds. Labeling the drawing t describe its parts and their functin is a gd idea. The Prttype: The students shuld build smething that represents their ptential slutin. They shuld then use this sectin t draw and describe their prttype. The difference between the drawing in this sectin and the previus ne is that befre they were describing what they were planning n building. In this sectin they are describing what they actually built which may be smaller r use less expensive materials than their riginal idea. Ways f Using the Template The template can be used in several ways. (1) Lse-leaf individually bund ntebks: Prvide each student with cpies all the pages f the template. They can use the graph paper and lined paper at the end f the template t make additinal sheets t insert in the varius sectins r yu can prvide supplies f these tw sheets fr students wh need extra pages. Ntebks may be bund accrding t yur r the students preferences using staples, reprt cvers, three-ring binders, r sme ther methd. (2) Glue-stick custmizatin fr pre-bund cmpsitin ntebks: Prvide each student with cpies f all the pages f the template except the blank lined page at the end f the template. Students shuld glue pages nt pages in the cmpsitin bk as they are cmpleted. When students need additinal pages in a sectin they can use the ntebk pages withut gluing n pages r they can glue cpies f the graph paper nt cmpsitin pages. The Table f Cntents Page shuld be updated as new sectins in the ntebk are started. Alternatively, the students can use the template as guidelines fr what they handwrite n the pages f the cmpsitin bks. (3) Pre-bund individual ntebks: Prvide each student with either a full-size r half-size cpy f this template, chsing the number f pages yu think is apprpriate fr each step. Suggestins fr Design Ntebks fr K-2 nd Grades Kindergarten The Oregn Administrative Rules d nt require Kindergarten students t prduce a wrk sample. Instead yu might want t have students use wrksheets t draw their ideas and then use simple tls like scissrs and materials like cnstructin paper, glue and tape t build structures. Yu can als have students disassemble and reassemble things t learn hw they wrk. One example wuld be an inexpensive flashlight. 1 st Grade The Oregn Administrative Rules d nt require 1 st grade students t prduce a wrk sample. Nevertheless yu may want t intrduce yu students t the idea f keeping a wrkbk. The 1 st grade standard uses the wrd structure rather than prttype s yur template shuld prbably d s as well. It als emphasizes the relatinship f the parts f a structure t the functin f the structure. While this may sund cmplicated it can be as simple as a rf keeping the rain ut and a windw letting light in. There is a reference t using tls in the 1 st grade standard. Such tls wuld prbably be simple things like scissrs t cut cnstructin paper r a bread knife t spread mdeling clay. Even if yu decide against using ntebks, yu shuld still have yur students use the steps described in the standard: Identify tls that can be used t build things.
