Convert VHS to Digital or DVD using Roxio Video Capture 1. Plug in USB to VHS Convert. in the patch panel. 2. On the computer, click the Roxio Video Capture icon This window will appear: 3. Press the Power button on the VCR and insert your VHS tape. Your video will appear in the blue box and begin playing. Press Stop or Pause on the VCR. 1

4. Type in a file name for your recording. You do not need to change any settings. - Optional: Select the Auto-stop checkbox and choose a time from the pop-up list. The recording will stop automatically after the designated amount of time has passed. 5. Using the buttons on the VCR, find the spot on your tape where you want to begin recording and press Pause there. You will have the option to trim the beginning and end of your recording later if needed. 6. Click on the red Record button on the computer, then press play on the VCR. You are now recording. - You can watch and listen to your video while it records, or mute the volume and work on other programs on the computer. This will not affect the recording. 2

Optional Step - You can pause the recording and skip over parts of your video by clicking Pause on the screen and fast forwarding on the VCR while the recording is paused. - Click the Pause button on the screen again to resume the recording. 3

7. When you would like to stop recording, click the Stop button on the screen and press Stop on the VCR. 8. Once you have hit Stop on the screen, you can watch your video in the preview window. 4

9. To watch a recording from the beginning, click the Play button. Or to advance to a specific portion of the recording, drag the Playhead to the desired position, then click Play. If you are happy with your recording the way it is, skip to step 10. If you want to trim the recording continue below. Optional Step: Trim The control panel under the Preview window includes two types of trim controls: one set trims material from the beginning or end of a recording and the other trims material from the middle of a recording. To trim the beginning of a recording: - Drag the Start Point triangle to the right until you reach the desired position. To trim the end of a recording: - Drag the End Point triangle to the left until you reach the desired position. 5

To trim content from the middle of a recording: - Drag the playback head to the approximate position of the content you would like to trim, then hit the Pause button. - Click the Add Trim Points button. Two new trim triangles appear below the Playhead. - Drag these trim triangles left and right to mark the start and end of the section you want trimmed. - If desired, trim additional portions of your recording by repeating these steps. 10. When you are happy with your recording, click the Finish button on the screen. 6

11. After a few minutes, a box will open saying your video has been saved successfully. Click OK. You will now see an icon for your movie in the upper right corner of the desktop. 12. To save the file to a flash drive, insert your flash drive in the USB port. Click and drag your file to your flash drive. 13. To burn to disc, right click on the movie icon and select Toast It from the menu. 7

14. Toast 16 Pro software will open. 15. Name your disc and click OK. The disc tray will automatically open. If you are ready to burn this disc, insert a blank recordable DVD in the drive, click Close Tray, and skip to step 16. If you want to add more recordings or edit the menu, click Cancel, close the disc drive, and continue here. 8

Optional Steps: More Records and Customizing Menu Add More Records: If you want to add more recordings to this disc click and drag them from the desktop or your flash drive to the content area. Each file will be a new chapter. Customizing the Menu: On the right side of the screen, click the arrow by Menu Style; this will bring up a list of all the menus. Pick a new menu style. If you wish to further customize the menu, click the Customize button, make your changes, and click OK. When you are ready to burn the disc: Click the red Burn button, Name your disc and click OK, then the disc tray will open. Insert a blank recordable disc. Click Close Tray. 16. A window will open to show you the status of the recording. It will tell you when your disc is ready. 9

17. When the disc is done, a window will appear to tell you it is ready. 18. If you would like to check your DVD, click Mount. Otherwise click: Eject. 19. If you select Eject, the disc tray will open for you. 20. If you select Mount, a window will appear in Toast, click ok. 10

21. The DVD Player will open and take you to the menu of your DVD. 22. Once you are satisfied with your DVD, on the DVD Player s Toolbar, press Stop and then Eject to eject your DVD. Make sure to take your recorded disc or flash drive with you. The computer will not save anything once you log out. 11

20. To end your session, close all active windows. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left and click Log Out CS4. 12
