Purpose This document will provide detailed instructions on how to install the VMware View Client v4.6 and required components on Intel based Macs. This document will further outline the steps to configure the client and connect to a virtual desktop using the VMware View Client. About View Client Versioning VMware View Client v1.4 is the first official release of the client by VMware. Previous versions were adopted by VMware from the open source community. As a result, previous versions of the View Client have a higher version number. The last open source version is v4.6 while the newest version by VMware is v1.4. The primary difference between versions is PCoIP support in v1.4. System Requirements Intel Mac with OS X 10.6.8 or higher 2GB RAM Minimum o Suggest 4GB RAM for better performance RSA SecurID token (see Appendix) An active internet connection o Suggest having a consistent connection for best performance DSL or cable connections are good options for better performance Users will need a valid BJC NT account o To request a valid NT account, please contact local CIS or call the CSC at (314) 362-4700 or ext. 24700. This document was created on a system running OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) and as a result there may be slight variances in how 4
certain items are displayed. Also, please note that the install steps will only need to be performed one time. Steps to access virtual desktops once the software has been installed will be detailed later in this document. Launch your preferred web browser (Safari, FireFox, etc). For the purposes of this document all steps will be completed using the built in web browser, Safari. In the address bar type vdi.bjc.org then press Return. When the page finishes loading you will see the link to download the VMware View Client. Click on View Client (6 MB) to begin the download. In Safari, there will be no prompt or confirmation to download. The file will automatically download to the Downloads folder. You can view the status of the download by clicking the down arrow in the upper right corner of the browser as pictured below. Note: If Safari download settings have been changed from the default behavior or if a different browser is being used, the next few steps will differ. When the download has completed, open a Finder window and navigate to the Downloads folder. The Downloads folder is located in your Home directory (displayed as your user name with a house icon). Double-click VMware-viewclient.dmg to launch the installer. In the first screen that appears, click Agree. A new window will open that displays the contents of the VMware-viewclient.dmg file. 6
Drag the VMware View Client to your Applications folder shortcut to install it. In the Applications folder, double-click VMware View Client to launch the application. 7
A security warning will display upon first launch, click Open. This warning will not appear again. Note: Depending on settings, this warning may not be displayed. Another window will open indicating that additional software is required. Click Download. 8
After clicking Download, a web page will open to download the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0.1. Click Download on this page to download the Remote Desktop Client for Mac. The latest version, 2.1.1, can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=18140 Default download - Version 2.0.1 Recommended Download - Version 2.1.1 9
Wait for the download to complete. When the download has completed, open the Downloads folder in Finder and double-click RDC201_ALL.dmg or RDC_2.1.1_ALL.dmg. The contents of the RDC201_ALL.dmg or RDC_2.1.1_ALL.dmg file will be displayed. Double-click Remote Desktop Connection.mpkg (2.0.1) or RDC Installer (2.1.1) to begin the installation. Click Continue. 10

Enter your password when prompted then click Install Software. When the install completes, click Close. 13
In the Applications folder, double-click VMware View Client again. When the application opens, you will see the screen below. Click Add Server. 14
In the box that drops down from the top, enter vdi.bjc.org in the Hostname field then click Continue. Upon successful connection, you will be prompted to enter your NT User ID and RSA SecurID token. For RSA SecurID assistance, please see the Appendix of this document. After entering your credentials, click Continue. 15
Upon successful authentication, you will next be prompted to enter your NT User ID and password. This will be your Windows password. Enter this information and click Continue. If the following warning appears, click Continue. 16
Upon successful authentication, you may be presented with a list of available desktops as shown below. Please note, you will not see this list if you only have access to one desktop, in this case you will be taken directly to the desktop. If you are presented with a list of available desktops, double-click the appropriate desktop, in this example, AMH General Medicine (No Printing). When you are ready to quit your session, you can log off or disconnect by clicking Start > Log Off or Start > Disconnect or you can also disconnect by clicking the Disconnect icon in the upper left hand corner as indicated by the arrow in the screenshot below. 17
Logging off will completely end the session; any unsaved work will be lost. Disconnecting will only close the application on your computer. The virtual desktop will continue to be available for reconnection for 60 minutes. After 60 minutes it will automatically log off. 18
Post Install Connections Once the VMware View Client and Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client have been installed you will not need to perform any of the install steps covered in this document again. 1. Launch the VMware View Client 2. Connect to vdi.bjc.org 3. Enter NT User ID and RSA SecurID Token 4. Enter NT User ID and Windows Password 5. If prompted, select desktop from list otherwise desktop will load 19
Appendix If you are using a RSA Hard Token, you will enter your PIN and passcode together when prompted. If using a soft token, enter your PIN in the RSA app on your phone or tablet and then the passcode provided in the app should be entered in VMware View when prompted.
