Ideal location During the planning of the fourth data center, green.ch put a lot of time and effort into finding the ideal location. With good reason: It is the basis of the availability and security of the data entrusted to us. Lupfig, in the Canton of Aargau, fulfills all the requirements of a high-security data center. This outstanding location is both far away from any hazardous zones subject to natural catastrophes such as earthquakes and flooding, and within easy reach of Zurich, Basel, and Bern. High accessibility International airports and other main traffic arteries that could affect operations are located sufficiently far away from the Zurich West data center. At the same time, the data center is highly accessible. Taking the nearby highway (in Birr), Lupfig is only a 30-minute drive from Zurich, 40 minutes from Basel and 50 minutes from Bern. The new data center can also be easily reached using public transportation: The data center is only a five-minute walk from the Lupfig train station and there are plans to locate a bus stop right in front of the building. By 2016, the suburban railway will also be extended, providing a direct connection from Lupfig to Zurich. Ideally networked Lupfig also has an ideal networking location, between the two most important fiber rings in Switzerland Zurich-Basel and Zurich-Bern. The carrier connection has a redundant setup. Delay-free connections are possible to the cities of Zurich, Basel, Bern, and Luzern (tested by Cisco and others). Synchronous data mirroring also takes place with no delays. The full bandwidth of up to 420 Gbit/s can be used up to a distance of 100 km. Ideal protection Security is top priority at green.ch. We have used the most advanced measures and technologies for the new Zurich West data center. The building is used solely as a data center there are no other tenants or businesses that could affect security. Our specialists monitor the status and operation of our data center 24 hours a day. In addition to personnel resources, we provide technical security measures such as inside and outside surveillance cameras. Our comprehensive security concept also includes highly effective burglary protection systems and access systems that are based on state-of-the-art isolation systems equipped with biometric hand vein scanners. 04
Secure under all circumstances In the event of a power failure, the Zurich West data center continues to be supplied with power, and it is also optimally protected against a fire outbreak. Your data is continuously available at all times. Power is supplied via two completely independent power lines from two separate electricity plants. Power is fed in via a redundant energy infrastructure and runs through the data center over two separate feeds, Feed A and Feed B, until the rack is reached. Redundant UPS systems and high-performance diesel generators ensure that the data center s high availability requirements are met even in the event of an emergency. All materials used in the Zurich West data center are flame resistant. The fire detection system informs the alarm center of any faults, and thanks to the early warning fire detection system, even minor deviations are detected. Our data center has a high-performance fire extinguishing system for automatically triggered fire fighting. The data center is continually cooled, ensuring optimum climatic conditions. The cooling systems meet ecological standards, reducing energy consumption to a minimum. 05

International certification Our data center is operated in accordance with ISO 27001, the information security standard. Operating processes have been nationally and internally certified by SQS and IQ NET. The data center in Lupfig is also FINMA compliant and can be audited for SAS 70 compliance by a certification body. COMPLIANCE COMPLIANCE Naturally green Green IT not just a buzz word to green.ch. We took the latest energy optimization findings into account when building the new Lupfig data center. The Zurich West data center follows the latest ecological standards for power usage effectiveness (PUE). In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, numerous elements, processes, and installations were analyzed and optimized for efficiency. The latest generation of air conditioners, soot particle filters in green diesel generators, and the use of controlled cold aisle technology are further measures taken to improve the ecobalance of the data center. Waste heat is used for heating purposes, reducing the cooling and energy requirements. The south facing side of the building has 700 sqm of available space for installing solar panels. Upon request, the power requirements in the racks can also be met using electricity generated in Swiss hydroelectric stations. Innovative extension The greentower will be located directly next to the Zurich West data center. This new building will offer six levels of office space with room for 300 to 400 workplaces, which can also be rented as emergency workplaces.
