What is Apple Carplay? Apple Carplay transfers the most popular functionality of a customer s Apple iphone to their select model Mercedes-Benz. Carplay menus appears on the vehicle s COMAND screen. Setting up the iphone Time Cellular signal strength Type of cellular service There is no setup, simply plug in the data/charging cable Customer must have the latest software level for their phone
How to connect the customer s iphone to the vehicle Using the customer s applicable phone and charging cable, connect to the port with the iphone nomenclature next to it Image from customer s center console Customer provided charging /data cable
Once the cable is connected on both ends, the Carplay logo appears on the phone display
The COMAND screen will also change to the Carplay display
Use the COMAND controller to navigate around the Carplay screen
Some steering wheel buttons will function Telephone answer Volume up Mute Voice control Hang up call Volume down
Apps to be used with Carplay Not all customer apps will show up on the Carplay display Carplay apps are chosen by Apple, the customer can not choose which apps will appear Google maps are not available, only Apple Maps Customer can download approved apps from the Apple App store Some apps may require a subscription
Wireless internet connection All wireless communication to the internet for Carplay is controlled by the customer s phone While Carplay is active, the customer is responsible for all data charges to their phone Customers may experience in increase in data charges if carplay is used regularly It is possible to use mbrace wifi 3G, however the customer may experience disruptions in service The next generation mbrace wifi, in future models, will function better as it will be 4G LTE It is not recommended to use local wifi, such as Optimum wifi, as the signal will fade as the vehicle moves away from the wifi source
Limited access to conventional COMAND functionality With Carplay connected With Carplay connected When Carplay is connected: Navigation, USB drives, SD media, CD media become unavailable COMAND main menu will appear different, as shown above
Siri voice control Voice commands with Carplay are done with Siri voice control Most commands with carplay are done with Siri Simply push the voice control button on the steering wheel to initiate a command
Telephone screens
Apple Maps Apple Maps uses the navigation system from the customer s phone Apple Maps does not use the navigation system from COMAND Address can be input using Siri voice control
Text messaging Receives and sends text messages All text content is done by Siri voice control Text content will not appear on COMAND display Incoming messages are shown as a pop-up
