Chapter 1: sysstat 1.1 This description applies to sysstat probe version 1.1. This section contains the following topics: sysstat Overview (see page 7) Documentation Changes (see page 8) sysstat Overview This probe monitors the iseries systems statistics. Alarm message can be generated on current variable values. Quality of service messages on all variables can be directed towards the Nimsoft Monitor solution. Chapter 1: sysstat 1.1 7

sysstat Overview Documentation Changes This table describes the version history for this document. Version Date What's New? 1.1 August 2012 Added support for web-based SOC; added new alarm and QoS metric functionality. Chapter 2: sysstat Probe Deployment This section contains the prerequisites, supported platforms and system requirements for the sysstat probe. This section contains the following topics: Supported Platforms (see page 9) System Requirements (see page 9) Software Requirements (see page 9) Monitoring System Requirements (see page 10) Probe Deployment Information (see page 10) Supported Platforms The sysstat probe supports the same set of operating systems and databases as supported by the Nimsoft Server solution. Please refer to the Nimsoft Compatibility Support Matrix for the latest information on supported platforms. System Requirements The sysstat probe should be installed on systems with the following minimum resources: Memory: 2-4GB of RAM. Probe's OOB configuration requires 256MB of RAM CPU: 3GHz dual-core processor, 32-bit or 64-bit Software Requirements The sysstat probe requires the following software environment: Nimsoft Monitor Server 5.1.1 or later Nimsoft Robot 5.23 or later Java Virtual Machine 1.6 or later (typically installed with NMS 5.0 and above) Note: For SOC functionality, NM Server 5.6 or later and UMP 2.5.2 or later is required. Chapter 2: sysstat Probe Deployment 9

Monitoring System Requirements Monitoring System Requirements The probe GUI offers functionality to monitor the iseries system statistics. Probe Deployment Information There are two ways to distribute archive packages. You can distribute the package within Infrastructure Manager or use the standalone Nimsoft Distribution application. See Probe Deployment for more information on deploying probes. 10 sysstat Guide

Chapter 3: sysstat Configuration This section describes the configuration concepts and procedures for setting up the sysstat probe. This probe is configured to monitor the statistics of the iseries systems. This section contains the following topics: Probe Configuration Interface Installation (see page 11) Probe Configuration (see page 11) Probe Configuration Interface Installation The probe configuration interface is automatically downloaded and installed by the Nimsoft Infrastructure Manager when the probe is deployed on a robot. Probe Configuration The sysstat probe is configured by double-clicking the line representing the probe in the Infrastructure Manager. This brings up the configuration tool for the probe. The configuration user-interface shows the following tabs: Setup Tab (see page 12) Status Tab (see page 13) Chapter 3: sysstat Configuration 11

Probe Configuration Setup Tab This tab is used to configure: Check interval for system statistics Log level Alarm messages The fields in the above dialog are explained below: Check interval Specifies how often the system statistics are checked. Log properties Specifies the log file to which probe-internal log messages are written. The log level determines the detail-level of messages being logged. This functionality is used for internal checking of the probe. Alarm messages Specifies the alarm messages available for use in the monitoring profiles. The following commands are available in the right-click menu: New Creates a new alarm message. Default values are set in the fields. The following variables are available in the message text: - profile - variable - limit - value - unit - operation 12 sysstat Guide

Probe Configuration Edit Modifies fields of the alarm message. Delete Removes the selected alarm message. You will be asked for confirmation on this operation. One of the alarm messages may be designated as the default message, and will be used for profiles in which no alarm message is specified. Status Tab This tab lists all the configured monitoring profiles. Normally, you will have one entry for each statistics variable. Active profiles are checked. You can easily enable/disable monitoring of a specific variable by selecting/de-selecting the check box against the profile name. Chapter 3: sysstat Configuration 13

Probe Configuration The following commands are available when you right click in the profile list: New Creates a new profile and presents you with the Profile Properties (see page 14) window. Edit Edits the selected profile. Delete Deletes the selected profile. You will be asked to confirm the deletion. Refresh Fetches the current values of all the variables referred in the profiles. Profile Properties 14 sysstat Guide

Probe Configuration The fields in the above dialog are explained below: Name Active Each monitoring profile must have a unique name. If the variable name is used as profile name, the variable field may be left empty. Variable Select this check box if you want checking of the server to be done. The name of the statistics variable to be monitored. If the variable name is used as profile name, the variable field may be left empty. Available variables are: Batch jobs - BatchJobsEndedWithPendingPrinterOutput - BatchJobsEndeding - BatchJobsHeldOnJobQueue - BatchJobsHeldWhileRunning - BatchJobsOnHeldJobQueue - BatchJobsOnUnassignedJobQueue - BatchJobsRunning - BatchJobsWaitingForMessages - BatchJobsWaitingOrScheduled User information - UsersDisconnected - UsersSignedOffWithPendingPrinterOutput - UsersSignedOn - UsersSuspendedByGroupJobs - UsersSuspendedBySystemRequest Other system status information - CurrentUnprotectedStorageUsed - JobsInSystem - MaxUnprotectedStorageUsed - PercPermanentAddresses - PercProcessingUnitUsed - PercSystemASPUsed - PercTemporaryAddresses - SystemASP - TotalAuxilaryStorage Variable (continued) Storage Pool variables Chapter 3: sysstat Configuration 15

Probe Configuration A storage Pool.* variable defines the value for a specified Storage Pool. Note that the pools found will vary from computer to computer. PoolDefault variables are valid for all storage pools. - Pool.*MACHINE.Usage - Pool.*MACHINE.PoolSize - Pool.*MACHINE.ReservedSize - Pool.*MACHINE.DatabaseFaults - Pool.*MACHINE.DatabasePages - Pool.*MACHINE.NonDatabaseFaults - Pool.*MACHINE.NonDatabasePages - Pool.*MACHINE.ActiveToWait - Pool.*MACHINE.WaitToIneligible - PoolDefault.Usage - PoolDefault.PoolSize - PoolDefault.ReservedSize - PoolDefault.DatabaseFaults - PoolDefault.NonDatabaseFaults - PoolDefault.NonDatabasePages - PoolDefault.ActiveToWait Alarm message When value Sets the condition when an alarm message should be generated. The next field should contain the limiting value against which you want to compare the current value of the variable. The '<<' button is used to fetch the current value of the variable. Use alarm message Determines which alarm message should be used when an alarm condition arises. If no alarm message is specified, the default one will be used. Quality of Service message Send value Select this check box to generate a QoS message every time the statistics variable is checked. 16 sysstat Guide

Chapter 4: QoS Threshold Metrics Many Nimsoft Monitor probes ship with default QoS threshold values set. The default threshold values provide an idea of the type of values to be entered in the fields and are not necessarily recommended best practice values. To aid in tuning thresholds and reducing false-positive alarms, this section describes the QoS metrics and provides the default QoS thresholds. This section contains the following topics: sysstat Metrics (see page 17) sysstat Alert Metrics Default Settings (see page 18) sysstat Metrics The following table describes the QoS metrics that can be configured using the sysstat probe.
