Communication and Internet Describe about computer communication, the network and the technologies used to build the Internet

Digital Communication Communication A process of exchanging information between two components (transmitter to receiver) by a communication channel/medium. Digital communications The process where two or more computers or devices transfer data, instructions, and information between each other.

Computer Network A network is a group of computers and devices connected together via communications devices and transmission media Advantages: Allow fast and reliable communication Allow communication between personals Allow hardware sharing Allow data and information sharing Allow software sharing

Network Types WAN Wide area network (WAN) - network that covers a large geographic area MAN Metropolitan area network (MAN) - connects LANs in a metropolitan area Network types PAN Personal area network (PAN) - connects computers and devices in an individual s or personal environment with wired and wireless technology LAN local area network (LAN) - connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area WLAN Wireless LAN (WLAN) - LAN that uses no physical wires

Network Architecture Network architecture is the configuration of computers, devices, and media on a network Client / server Peer-to-peer

Network Topology A network topology - the layout of the computers and devices in a communications network. Star network Bus network Ring network

Communication Device A communications device is a hardware for transmitting data, instructions, and information allows data transfer between computers on a network broadband modem sends and receives data and information to and from a digital line e.g. DSL modem wireless access point is a central communications device that allows computers and devices to transfer data wirelessly among themselves or to a wired network network card enables a computer or device that does not have built-in networking capability to access a network hub or switch is a device that provides a central point for cables in a network

Internet Internet - a worldwide collection of networks and interconnected computers from various locations Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides access to the Internet - free or for a fee IP address is a unique number sequence to identify computer or device which is connected to the Internet Domain name is a common form that represents the IP address but more readable to human (and to memorize) DNS server a computer that translates the domain name into IP address, and vice versa

World Wide Web The World Wide Web (WWW), or web, deliver the content for the Internet - formed by the collection of web pages from various computers and locations A website - a group of related document (web pages) which contains multimedia items (text, pictures, etc) linked to each other by hyperlinks A web server a dedicated computer that serves the visitors for accessing a website

Internet Search Engine A search engine is an application which is used to search websites, information, multimedia items (e.g. images, video) by keywords as the search query A search query is the keywords or statement related with the search items A subject directory organized a list of web pages into specific categories and sub categories E.g. websites related with cats can be search in the 'animal' category and the subcategory 'cat'
