LINE VOLTAGE TESTER USER S MANUAL CT101 Please read this manual carefully and thoroughly before using this product.

KEY FEATURES Visual indication of AC or DC voltage Easy to use approved Safe for CAT II 600V use Insulated housing Pocket clip on back SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS DANGER Electric Shock Risk Warning DANGER Electric Shock Risk To avoid possible electric shock or personal injury, and to avoid damaging the tester or the equipment being tested: Do not use the CT101 in any way not detailed in this manual or the tester's safety features may be compromised. Never use the tester to detect the presence of voltages higher than 500V (AC or DC). The CT101 may not detect the presence of voltages lower than 80V. Use caution whenever detecting AC 2

voltages above 42VAC RMS or DC voltages above 60VDC. Both pose a shock hazard. Before using the tester, inspect the case. Do not use the CT101 if the case is damaged. Look for cracks or missing plastic. Pay particular attention to the insulation around the connectors. Do not operate the tester around explosive gas, vapor, or dust. When using the probes, keep your fingers behind the finger guards. Never touch the metal ends of the probes when making a measurement. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Follow the instructions for the type of circuit you wish to test, using the figures as a guide: Three-Wire AC Grounded Outlets and Power Strips/Cords NEUTRAL HOT GROUND 3

Insert one probe into the narrow ( hot ) slot of the receptacle and the other into the wide (neutral) slot. Either probe can go into either slot. If the line is hot, the orange neon bulb at the end of the tester will glow. To test whether the circuit is grounded, insert one probe into the narrow ( hot ) slot and the other into the ground slot. Be sure to push the probe all the way into the ground slot to be sure that it makes contact. The neon bulb will glow if the receptacle is grounded. Then test between the wide (neutral) and ground slots. The neon bulb should not glow. Note: The CT101 cannot indicate the quality of a ground, reversed ground wiring, two hot wires in a circuit, or more than one wiring fault. Two-Wire AC Outlets and Power Cords Insert the probes into the two slots. The neon bulb will glow if the circuit is live. To determine which slot is hot, insert one probe into the narrow slot and touch the other probe to the metal mounting screw. If the bulb glows, the screw is grounded, the 4

narrow slot is hot, and the wide slot is neutral (grounded). If the bulb does not glow, the screw is not grounded, the wide slot is hot, and the narrow slot is neutral. Three-Wire 220VAC Receptacles Insert the first probe NEUTRAL into the round (neutral) hole and the second probe into either rectangular slot. If the bulb glows, that slot is hot. Then move the second probe to the other rectangular slot. If the bulb glows, that slot is also hot. Finally, insert the probes into both rectangular slots. The bulb will glow more brightly to indicate the presence of 220VAC. SPECIFICATIONS Voltage Detection Range: 80 to 500VAC/DC Safety Rating: CAT II 600V Lead Thickness: 20 AWG Weight: 0.6 oz. (17g) Operating Temperature: 23 to 104 F (-5 to 40 C) @ <80%RH (<60%RH above 88 F/31 C) 5
