1. Purpose The Blue Medora VMware vrealize (vrops) Management Pack for MongoDB User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for MongoDB, including dashboards, views, reports, metrics, and alerts that allow users to optimize the monitoring of MongoDB resources from within vrealize. 2. Introduction to the Management Pack The Management Pack for MongoDB is an embedded adapter for vrealize (vrops) that monitors MongoDB databases remotely. The Management Pack retrieves data regarding MongoDB resources by connecting to a specified mongos or mongod instance. This section includes the following topics: How the Management Pack Collects Data Data the Management Pack Collects 2.1 How the Management Pack Collects Data During each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a MongoDB Client connection to the configured mongos/mongod and queries it to retrieve metrics regarding database resources. The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. The Management Pack supports Autodiscovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable Autodiscovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vrealize and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vrops, the Management Pack creates the resource kind. 2.2 Data the Management Pack Collects The Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following MongoDB resources: 1. Replica Figure 1: Example Traversal Spec 2.3 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vrops allows you to easily navigate your environment. 3. Dashboards Dashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor MongoDB resources from within vrealize. The following dashboards are available in the Management Pack: MongoDB Overview MongoDB Health Investigation MongoDB Environment MongoDB IOPS MongoDB Mongos Instances MongoDB Databases s MongoDB 3.1 MongoDB Overview The MongoDB Overview dashboard provides at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your MongoDB resources (mongos instances, mongods, shards, databases, etc.). 3.2 MongoDB Health Investigation The MongoDB Health Investigation dashboard displays the current active alerts in your MongoDB environment. When an alert is selected, health information and key performance indicators (KPIs) related to the affected resource are shown, along with a Topology (relationships) view of the resource and health information for its parent and child resources. 3.3 MongoDB Environment The MongoDB Environment dashboard depicts your MongoDB environment from your top-level resources, down through the hierarchy. Selecting any resource from the Environment Selector will populate health, KPIs, and properties information for that resource. 3.4 MongoDB IOPS The MongoDB IOPS dashboard allows you to select a node to view IOPS metrics for that mongos/mongod resource. You can also select a related virtual machine or datastore view IOPS metrics for those resources. 3.5 MongoDB Mongos Instances The MongoDB Mongos Instances dashboard allows you to select a database and Mongos instance to drill-down into opcounters, asserts, memory, connections, network, and page faults information for that Mongos instance. 4. Views The vrops Management Pack for MongoDB creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics for various MongoDB resources. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view. To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > MongoDB and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected. 6. Alerts The Management Pack for MongoDB pulls health status and events from MongoDB resources and displays them in vrealize as alerts. Refer to section 10. Analysis Badges Using the predictive analytics capabilities of the vrops Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for MongoDB populates Connections Capacity for the mongos and mongod resource kinds. 8. Troubleshooting the Management Pack Known troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for MongoDB. This section includes the following topics: Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance Testing Connection Failures Viewing System Log Files 8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance: Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vrops. Refer to section 8.2 Testing Connection Failures. View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vrops. Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section 8.3 Viewing System Log Files, for details. 8.2 Testing Connection Failures When clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible. 8.2.1 Authentication Failed Error: Authentication failed. Please check your credentials and/or SSL certificate. Action: Ensure that your MongoDB user name and password is correct the SSL certificate is valid if Validate Certificate Against Truststore Advanced tings configuration field is set to True. 8.2.2 SSL Authentication Required Error: SSL Authentication Required. Action: Ensure that SSL is enabled (set to True) in the appropriate Advanced tings configuration field. 8.2.3 PKIX Path Building Failed Error: PKIX path building failed. Unable to find valid certification path to requested target. Action: Ensure that the SSL certificate is in the correct truststore. 8.2.4 Change Authentication Type to Default Error: Change Authentication Type to Default. Unsupported mechanism PLAIN Action: Change Authentication Type to Default when adding your credential. 8.2.5 MongoClient does not have any server addresses Error: MongoClient does not have any server addresses. Action: Ensure that connections can be made to the hostnames listed in the Host configuration field. 8.2.6 Not authorized on admin to execute command Error: Not authorized on admin to execute command <command> with username= <username> to on <host>/admin>. 8.2.7 Unable to find databases with server address Error: Unable to find databases with server address list <hosts>. Action: Make sure the specified host has databases. 8.2.8 Could not create any MongoClients Error: Could not create any MongoClients connecting to mongods. Action: Make sure the mongods are up. 8.3 Viewing System Log Files You can view adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vrops user interface or in an external log viewer. The adapter log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/mongodb_adapter3/ folder. The collector log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder. The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG. You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator > Support > Logs > Select COLLECTOR folder > Select Edit Properties icon > Edit Root logger level. NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
